Re-inforce his decision to go digital, while at the same time,

Too late, I think. I've told him in the past just how good those things are. All I
can do is offer them a good home (and tempt them with some A* glass) and
hope he doesn't charge me ebay prices :)

I was talking to the owner of the camera shop last night and he told me how
he found an LX at an insurance auction. It had been in a 4WD which
overturned in a river. The camera had been stored somewhere around roof-
level so it spent a few hours underwater. He picked it up for 50 bucks (NZ
dollars, worth about half that in US currency) and it still works today without
repair, over 10 years later.

I'm curious. I had a SuperProgram for many years. What aspect of the
SuperProgram are you wanting that isn't covered by a ZX-5n or MZ-S. I find
the usage of the bodies just mentioned quite similar to the SuperProgram.
So shed some light on what you like so much.

MZ-5 is pretty close, at least in it's philosophy. It adds multi
pattern metering to the feature set. Of course, you have to put
up with an autowinder all the time, but it is, at least, a
fairly quiet one.

Re: More Limited products from Pentax

2001-10-03 Thread Ed Dombek

Bruce:

My first SLR was a SuperProgram which I had until last year. I replaced it with a
ZX-5n. I was happy with the SP and am happy with the ZX-5n. But

1. I think the Viewfinder was MUCH easier to use and more importantly see in the SP.
It certainly was brighter.

2. I miss the split field focusing when in manual. My dream is that the Viewfinder
display/screen could change when I select manual on the 5n to a split focusing screen
and the zoned view when in AF. I'd buy that it a minute! (I don't know if it is
technically feasible but that would me something IMHO).

Now the reason why I went with the ZX-5n:

1. Auto-focus. My teenage stepsons and wife will now use the camera. Which makes it
more fun for all of us.

2. Pop-up flash. Just convenience. I do also have a Phoenix ZBIF-92P though.

3. The battery pack FG is a perfect accessory. I had a Winder ME II with the SP but
it still required the button batteries. The heft of the 5n is perfect with
battery pack.

I am having a blast with the 5n and have spent way too much money on lens. (Just
bought a SMC-F 85mm f/2.8 Soft on eBay.) I'm taking the camera with me more like I
used to so that has to be a good thing.

The camera reads the encoded film speed, however, you can over-ride it. It
is more safety than anything. There have been times in the past, when in
the heat of the moment, I have shot at the wrong speed, with no way of
recapturing. My mistake of course.

Re: More Limited products from Pentax

2001-10-01 Thread Shel Belinkoff

It would be wonderful if Pentax exploited the various niche markets
and produced some very high-quality cameras and optics. Perhaps the
cameras could have a minimal set of features in exchange for superior
quality and durability. Likewise for the lenses.
I for one would gladly pay top dollar for equipment such as this. I'd
also like to see Pentax come out with a rangefinder body that could
use not only their lenses (like the 43mm Ltd they made in Leica Thread
mount) but Leica lenses as well as lenses for other, earlier
rangefinder cameras. A simple adapter could be used to couple various
lenses to the Pentax body (as is already being done for other
cameras).

Pentax could produce all they want of the bread and butter lines of
cameras, and offer something superior to those who want more unique or
specialized offerings.

I believe this is pretty much what the camera division boss said in that interview:
Pentax will continue making hit products, which I translate into meaning the popular
volume stuff. But they would also concentrate on making legends.

I do think Pentax have realised the two-fold division of their customer base; this
division is easy to spot in this forum. 1) The ones who want a good deal and don't
want to spend much money; 2) The Pentax connoisseur who pay whatever it takes in order
to get hold of the great, legendary Pentax products.
The latter group pay a fortune for legendary K and A* lenses and are willing to pay
the price for the Limited lenses.
