Tot up all the lenses it would be possible to use on a Pentax. We must

In the Pentax K mount line alone there are about 150 different prime
lenses in K mount, (ok about twenty or so are probably different flavors
of normal), about another 100 zooms, (once again about 20 or so are
different kit zooms).. Counting third party lenses we're talking about
literely thousands of useful focal lengths, with little exaggeration
there are probably hundreds of gems among them.

OT: Wanted -- Snappy Retorts

2010-03-30 Thread Christine Nielsen
Hello all,

I'm kind of new here, been lurking around mostly, but I've seen enough to know
that you'll be able to help me Here's my situation:

Last night I started the first class of a ten-week workshop on Portraiture. As
usually happens, the instructor came to the point where she wanted to get a
rough idea of who she was dealing with. How many people shoot Canon? How
many are Nikon shooters? She counted the hands that went up, and then,
shaking her head side to side in the NO gesture, she said, Does anyone have
anything else...? This is when my hand went up. She looks at me surprised,
Sony?

Nope. Pentax.

Her look changes from surprise to an equal mix of confusion and concern. Do
you /really/?

I really do.

Now, I am perfectly confident and comfortable in my choice of gear. I do not
feel embarrassed or ashamed. I also prefer to let my photos do the talking,
instead of the camera brand. Howeversometimes, I just want a good
comeback. Something that demonstrates just how brilliant and
independent-minded I am in my choice, and how superior it is. What do you say
to the Canikon crowd to put them in their place? I would like to have
something ready to go when I go back tonight for the start of the Creative
Lighting workshop.
:)

Thanks!

Christine, I am thinking that:

1. As a immediate response you might point them to
http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com and indicate that all photos therein
are made with Pentax gear.

2. As a midterm response you might have to bring in some of your
favorite photographs printed, say in A3 size to show them that the light
goes more or less in the same manner through you gear as it does through
theirs.

3. As a longterm response you might simply point out that it is not the
gear who makes the shot, but the photographer, so that if you give Canon
1D MK IV or Nikon D3S or whatever to a chimpanzee, it is unlikely to
produce stellar pictures just by virtue of the label thereupon.

with, but wouldn't have worked for you is I already have a penis, so
I didn't need to buy one at the camera store.

Chances are her concern is based a lot on her not knowing anything

around Nikon but is clueless on how to deal with Pentax.

Re: OT: Wanted -- Snappy Retorts

2010-03-30 Thread Miserere
So now your 365 is over you just can't put the camera down, huh? :-)

Whenever I am in that situation, it tends to be a Canon Digital Rebel
shooter who is questioning my choice. I start off by asking how much
they paid for their camera, which is usually around $700. Then I hand
them my K10D and proceed to eloquently point out all the features it
has which their digital rebel lacks (image stabilisation, weather
seals, good VF, two e-dials, in-camera JPEG developing, DNG
capability, quick access *buttons*, TAv, the feel and solidity of a
real camera, etc, etc, etc). Then I take my camera back and say: It
cost the same as *your* camera.

You'll be surprised how this technique still works even today, when I
compare my 2006 K10D with 2009 digital rebels.

In a classroom setting such as yours, I would actually be insulted
that the *TEACHER* would be prejudiced in that fashion. Any teacher
who doesn't know what Pentax stands for in the World of Photography
should not be teaching classes. If she were teaching sports
photography, it might be another story, but she isn't. You can take
portraits with a toilet paper roll, some glass and film in a box if
you really need to.

But welcome back to the group, Christine :-)

It's really too late to respond to what she said without sounding
like an insecure dork. On the spot a reply that I would have been
tempted with, but wouldn't have worked for you is I already have a
penis, so I didn't need to buy one at the camera store.

Uh, I believe the person who raised the question is a lady. So that
probably wouldn't work very well for her:-).

Paul

Chances are her concern is based a lot on her not knowing anything
about Pentax gear. She probably knows Canon, and can figure her way
around Nikon but is clueless on how to deal with Pentax.

additional opinions that are baseless and subjective.

I thought it wasn't about the equipment.

I merely point out that *ALL* of my lenses are stabilized; that I can
even still use Pentax's *LEGENDARY* screw mount optics when I wish and
let the quality of my results say whatever else needs saying.

Even if she were teaching sports photography. When I was taking
Photojournalism the instructor, the photography editor at the Providence
Journal, (at the time probably the best Newspaper in New England),
commented that my Spotmatic was the preferred camera of the sports
photographers on the paper.

On 3/30/2010 10:27 AM, Miserere wrote:

Simple: Pentax is in a class by itself.

;-)

BTW, M., the Rebel does have image stabilization (on the lenses, not the
camera, true, Pentax does it on the camera, not the lenses).

...Then if you need to, point out that Pentax has all the same features as
the HIGHER END Canon and Nikons (with a slight sneer at any Canon Rebels
near by you), but at a lower price. And, in addition to that, you can use
75-year-old lenses on it if you want.

Pentax glass is good forever.

(Well, I think the M doesn't work that well, but pretty much everything
works, somehow.)

Marnie aka Doe :-) - A happy Canon Rebel user. Heh.
