Semi-OT: Earthquake in North Carolina
There was a 5.1 earthquake about 2 miles SE of Sparta, NC just after 8:00 this morning. Only "Semi" off topic because it's 40 miles NE of Grandfather Mountain. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=30.88337,-88.26416=40.94671,-70.26855 I think that might have been what woke me up this morning. -- Science - Questions we may never find answers for. I'd spring awake with a shot of adrenalin and struggle to get back to sleep if one hit at night, which they did often after our first quake, while the wife just slept right through. I wasn't in a great state of mind after a few nights of that. I think heavy sleeping runs in her family. Her grandfather slept right through the 7.1, goodness knows how. Gotta love the granite underpinning of the east coast. It was able to carry the shock waves from Mineral, VA, to Maine and down to S.Carolina. If it as California, even at that shallow a depth (6 KM) you wouldn't feel it 100 miles away because of the millions of years of Redwood tree needles and bark that have compacted into the earth. OT: Earthquake
There was an earthquake in Virgina this afternoon that I felt here in Raleigh, NC. For some reason, my house just started shaking around 1:50pm. Seemed to go on for about half a minute, but could have been longer. Strong enough to rattle the windows and make my monitor wobble visibly. I tried calling the local TV station, but the cell-phone system seems to be down right now. All my calls show calling and then just seem to time out. I've noticed that I have voice mail can't call that either, same thing happens. May just be overwhelmed. Messy, but by golly, no camera, no computer, no monitor, no glass anywhere was harmed in the making of this event. Quite a while ago, due to the earthquake risk, I moved all my lenses from the top shelf to the 2nd-bottom. Bottom shelf would have been inconvenient to access, and too easy to foot-damage. I'm glad to hear there was no serious damage or loss of life. I keep my gear in cut closed cell foam bottomed plastic drawers in those innexpensive roll around multi-drawer Costco specials. Use cardboard for dividers between camera bodies and motors and such. The lenses each have a hole cut in the foam for them. Pretty hard for them to bang together, though I imagine they would go all over if the drawer/storage units fell over. The smaller AF and A* stuff is mostly nestled in Halliburtons. The larger lenses are in military surpluss shipping containers. It would take more than an earthquake to render my gear done... (knock on wood!) Joseph McAllister writes: It would take more than an earthquake to render my gear done... (knock on wood!) Your setup sounds good. I'm more worried about losing it all to burglary at the moment as there's been a lot of them in this area recently. The crooks have been targetting three streets in the area which are well known to house students, who tend to own easily saleable items such as Playstations. I'm going to look at a lockable steel cabinet tomorrow; even though I can't really afford one I'd rather use the credit card again than have to replace my gear. Cheers, - Dave David A. We just had a 6.2 trembler here, about 30 miles south of Seattle. Some damage, no injury reports yet. The phone lines are jammed, but the internet works fine (DSL). I wished I was out with a camera, it would have presented lots of fast opportunities to capture natural candid reactions to something quite bizarre. It lasted over a minute, woke me out of bed, and was the worst one yet here in the 4.5 years I've lived here. Here in Vancouver can feel it too. It was upgraded to a 6.8, epicentered 35 miles southwest of Seattle, about 30 miles deep, lasting about 1 minute. My house is fine, as I live about 10 miles east of Seattle, and the major jolts were filtered out - the ground just kept rolling and rolling... Because of the depth of the quake, they don't expect aftershocks. People here at work are going home to check their houses. A couple of our buildings have been closed on another campus due to damage. It seems we skirted the big one, here, as injuries seem minimal considering the intensity.
