the Google Instant control determines whether it will show search
 _results_
dynamically, but you are facing a hang up in the search term
 suggestions aka
Google Autocomplete, and that can't be turned off with a preference; you
 will
find some suggested workarounds in the second answer here:

 http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Web+Search/thread?tid=5a69f1094357f31b

of those, this one worked for me:

 http://www.google.com/firefox

 but this didn't:

 http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0

upgrading Firefox might fix the hangs

Thanks.

Somewhat surprisingly, I get the reverse:

http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0 seems to do what I want, but
with http://www.google.com/firefox the first search is fine but if I
enter a follow up search in the results page, I'm back with
autocomplete.

Cheers

First off, I was assuming you were talking about a problem with the
Google search page, but now I wonder if you mean the Search box (that
can be set to different search engines, in the Firefox browser).

Do you have the same problem with another browser (like Opera or Chrome)?
Firefox 3.6.6 is no longer considered current:
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-7.0.1os=winlang=en-US
Would be curious to know if you have the same problem there.

I mean the search box on the page at http://www.google.com/

I don't use the search box on the toolbar, and I don't use any other
browser.

Firefox is supposed to automatically update *does* frequently prompt
me to download install updates.

I just double checked my preferences and Firefox is set to automatically
check for updates, but When updates are found ... ask me what I want to
do. I install the updates when it prompts, but I make it wait until I'm
finished with whatever task I'm doing at the time. It usually installs
updates the next time I start Firefox.

I don't know why it is down-level.

Hmmm. I tried that, set Google Preferences to 'Do not use Google
Instant', saved and then a 404 Error came up.

I tried a Google search anyway and found Google Instant wasn't disabled.

Went back to Google Preferences and saw that 'Do not use Google Instant'
was still checked. But Google Instant won't go away.

Oh well. I tried.

Seems like they fixed whatever was causing my bug.

OT: Has anyone else noticed any problems with Google

2011-10-06 Thread John Sessoms
I type about 15 characters in the Google search box it just loses
focus. I have to click in the search box again to get it to let me type
the rest of the search term.

EG: apropos today's discussions, I wanted to know What is the
difference between a spoonerism and a malapropism. But I am only able
to type What is the dif before the search box loses focus. I have not
changed any of my preferences.

Occasionally, when this happens I get a bar along the top of the window
from Firefox Do you want Firefox to remember the password for Google+?

It seems to have started some time yesterday.

I already keep instant search disabled by default. I found it very
distracting to have the page change every time I added another character
to the search term.

are you using the search in your browser toolbar or in the Google homepage?
