Re: OT: XP question - dudes, i got my dell
The OEM CD used to be the OS from Microsoft, there was very little trial software, sometimes things like the original beta version of MS Money. The other crap is often bulk filler supplied by the Manufacture, to punch up it's supplied software list. A company I worked for bought all it's programming work stations from Gateway, we got two CD's one of Micosoft's NT OS and one of the Gateway "enhancements". The frist thing we did when we got them was to take the OEM copy of the OS, (WinNT in this case), Format the Hard drive and install a clean version from the included MS installation CD. Then add drivers for the specific additional hardware, network cards, high res video cards etc. Once this was done you had a pretty clean install. The manufactures don't supply those Microsoft OEM CDs anymore. You didn't want most of the crap on the other CD, now you get neither. I found this little script on the Dell forums: http://www.yorkspace.com/pc-de-crapifier Written specifically to remove Dell bloatware, but works on any brand computer with any of the listed programs pre-installed. I ran it on mine and it worked as advertised. A lot of the extra stuff included with my new Dell a year ago was trial version stuff - good for some many days and then it was gonna cost to continue to use. Actually I believe that they are allowed to add their own, and other software by agreement, (under penalty of Anti Trust action), but removing something that Microsoft includes is a different matter, especially since installation CD/DVDs are no longer included, and most people don't know how to re-install, and will probably never re-install the OS, barring a complete melt down. Ann, Windows Power Toys at various times included a quick resolution change utility that installed as a monitor icon in the system tray allowing you immediate access to every resolutions that your card/monitor combination would support. It was incorporated into various sub versions of Windows and some card manufactures also included something like it with their bundled software. There may be something like that already on your machine. I always though it was useful because I run a bunch of older programs that don't follow current rules for resizing with resolution changes. I don't run XP so I'm not as familier what may be available built into XP. I will look into if for you.
