That's exactly why I had reservations about _cropping_ in my followup response to Ken's message. I am not that keen on extremely elongated images, unless the subject warrants that (such as a panorama). The scene was backlit, and I had trouble seeing and focusing, so I didn't compose it well. I can crop out some of the top, although that will mean either cropping the sides as well, which I do not want to do, or leaving the image a lot wider than it is high (which is not necessarily bad). The scene was backlit, and I had trouble seeing and focusing, so I didn't compose it well. (Also, my wife was already moving on and grumbling that I was spending too much time at that arch.) The image had a bluish tint, so I ignored it on my first go-around of my images from Ephesus. I was looking for something the other day, and ran across it again, and like the detain in the arch (and the Missing Piece), so I played with it and finally got something I like. I will play a bit more with the placement of the arch in the frame, to see what I can do. Thanks for looking, Igor, and for your helpful comments. Igor, in most cases I try to get it right in camera, but if the image is strong enough I have no issue cropping to suit the subject. PESO - Arch to the Light
We finished the NorCal PDML meet with some night shooting at the Palace of Fine Arts in SF, which is lit up at night. It was also windy and cold, very windy, so we didn't stay long (we had had a lot of wind earlier). I love the detail in the shaded rock-face, the sunlit tree in the foreground, the way the base of the rock mimics the left side of the tree (or is that vice-versa? ), and draws our eyes right to the hole in the arch. Bruce, A few years ago, I paid (dearly) for a guide who, as it turned out, didn't know the location of this spot. I didn't press it. Another example of my lack of persistence (wimpyness) in such things. Like your shot, but it appears sort of incomplete. It simply says "here it is" now bring your camera and go to work. For this trip, I was able to arrange a private tour for our group in an air-conditioned 4-wheel drive van. We were able to start the tour in the early afternoon and end at sundown. It made it really nice because we could stop anytime we wanted for as long as we wanted to take pictures and got to see the part that is missed by many. At least to my eyes... You see, there is no clear point of reference on the shot. I feel almost like I am standing on top of some hill and I don't really see the ground beneath me, which make me feel dizzy... But then again I am afraid of heights... I tried to crop off the left, so that the path leading to the arch would start at bottom left corner... Now I am feeling better ;-)... Just a suggestion, nothing more. Boris
