Re: PESO: Neglect
I don't know if the structure supporting the rose window contributed to its collapse but I can see how that might have happened. I suspect it would have done so anyway. Your questions are pretty much spot on. A building that survives one large quake might collapse in the next (as happened with the CTV building here). If restored it will need some substantial engineering. Definitely possible as they've been doing so with the Arts Centre. As for how far gone it is, that's the subject of the very argument that's keeping it in its current state :) I think the smallest number I've seen is about $70M NZD to restore. Re: PESO: Neglect
Yeah, I'd like to see it restored as well, but a couple of things occur to me. How far gone is it? I read that the structure that was supposed to stabilize the rose window contributed to its destruction in subsequent recent earthquakes. And what about future earthquakes? Will a restored structure stand? Or will it have to be restored again and again? ... and at what cost? Maybe a new one is the best answer. On 12/22/2016 10:30 AM, Daniel J. Re: PESO: Neglect
It'd be nice to preserve it but hideously expensive and very difficult to do safely. And that's before you consider trying to bring it up to modern earthquake standards. What's left of the building is badly cracked and considered unstable which is why the perimeter inside the fence is so wide. Whatever the outcome it'd be nice to see some progress being made. I don't have a preference one way or the other. On a brighter note we also visited the great hall at the Arts Centre (the former university) which is built in the same neo-gothic style. The whole complex is being restored and strengthened and is looking pretty good so far. Cheers, Dave > On Dec 23, 2016, at 4:30 AM, Daniel J. Re: PESO: Neglect
That's a difficult one. Where do the lawyer's come in? The sentimentalists would want restoration because it is/was a much loved landmark. On the other hand a modern cathedral (like Coventry or Guildford) is a good option too. Sense must prevail. Even the Normans flattened many old 8th century churches in England and built the 11th century Cathedrals we know so well today.
