There are two other papers in that bank of boxes that I get everyday - a
little frustrating when the
shovelers seal the doors!  (they open to the side, not from the top, and
are difficult to hold open

even when un blocked.)

Thanks Bruce!

I only noticed that little dry patch during processing but rather liked it.

I also liked the reflection of the pink umbrella person in the shop window on
the right. Would have cropped far differently were it not there.

Glad you enjoyed!

Thanks as well to Dave for commenting and to everyone who looked.

Re: PESO: Reading at the Beach

2013-03-15 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I understand your disappointment, Bob.

I was on the grass over the beach waiting to photograph yet another
Maui Sunset (a daily ritual on the Valley Isle). I noticed this
person ignoring the setting sun,and ignoring the sunset watchers. At
first, I could not tell whether the reader was a man or woman, because
of the attire and the hat. That was one of the things that drew my
attention. When some noisy children ran by, the reader looked up, and
I could see he was a man.

Look, even in Maui, not everyone is buff and sexy. They even permit
old dudes like me on the beach, provided we wear board shorts instead
of Speedos.

I intended this as a slice of life image, in my beach photography
series. This year, iPads and Kindles far outnumbered books of real
paper, making him even more of an outlier, and an individual.

I'll try to find more images of pretty young women for future postings.

Don't you listen to him. I like the empty foreground. It starts a
leading line down the alley and into the composition for me. There is
a lot to see in that image. The night track you're on is very
interesting and productive.

Veeery nice. Intriguing as to why he'd be reading there.

I'd crop some off the bottom, not just to remove some empty foreground
and de-center the subject horizontally, but because this scene just
feels somehow "semi-panoramic" to me.

Really good "moment" captured here. And the noise/grain works well.

Almost all of my night shots (including this one) are taken with my A 50mm f1.7.

And as someone already said, the word you're straining to figure out
is "fridges", short for "refrigerator".

Thanks for your comment, and thanks to everyone else who commented.

Another shot taken in the alleyway directly behind my house.

I guess It's my eyesight, Frank ...
In order to see the figure (and even with your telling me its tehre and
my enlarging it isn't recognizeable to me as a figure) I ahve to stare
at the photo for a full minute... but as in life, the bright lights in
the photo keep me from seeing what is in front - I have a serious
problem with glare ... ..

So what i see is only a little white line that I guess must be the book...
KInda a nice film noir effect there anyway... I think I could probably
see it in a print.

Hi!

Is it important for you to know what she is doing?
How do you feel the lack of context you both mentioned?

Yes, I'd like to see the book in her hands... How do I feel? I cannot
really describe it. It is kind of feeling when you see something and
realize something else is missing. This time it was easy, because I had
a title and because you told explicitly so.

I'll take this into account when posting future pictures, whcih doesn't
necessarily mean I will put more context, but I will be more conscious
about omitting it :^)

I'd be fascinated to see these works of yours!

Please keep posting!

Thanks for sharing with us. What I like about this shot is the
expression on her face and the tonality. What I wish I could see is
just a little more context - without your explanation, I would have no
clue what she was doing.

I'd second that, if I'd be so permitted.

Re: PESO: reading

2005-10-12 Thread Pancho Hasselbach

Bruce,

thank you very much for your thoughts.

I regard your answer even higher because it's the only one I have got,
and I confess I'm slightly disappointed.
I appreciate that you like the tonality, I just recently started doing
B&W on my own, and it's fascinating to make results visible. later this
year, I'll take a course on darkroom printing, to which I'm looking forward.
By now, it's a very hybride process making the negs visible, and I
posted this shot very spontaneously because I was so happy about the way
it came out scanning it in a new way.

Of course the lack of context is mysterious, but isn't that attracting,
in a way? of course I know what she was doing, but I try to forget and
to figure out at what she might be looking this way. Oops, that sounds
weird...

Anyway thanks again,
Pancho
