Re: PESO: Reading at the Beach
I understand your disappointment, Bob. I was on the grass over the beach waiting to photograph yet another Maui Sunset (a daily ritual on the Valley Isle). I noticed this person ignoring the setting sun,and ignoring the sunset watchers. At first, I could not tell whether the reader was a man or woman, because of the attire and the hat. That was one of the things that drew my attention. When some noisy children ran by, the reader looked up, and I could see he was a man. Look, even in Maui, not everyone is buff and sexy. They even permit old dudes like me on the beach, provided we wear board shorts instead of Speedos. I intended this as a slice of life image, in my beach photography series. This year, iPads and Kindles far outnumbered books of real paper, making him even more of an outlier, and an individual. I'll try to find more images of pretty young women for future postings. Frank, Don't you listen to him. I like the empty foreground. It starts a leading line down the alley and into the composition for me. There is a lot to see in that image. The night track you're on is very interesting and productive. Regards, Bob S. I guess It's my eyesight, Frank ... In order to see the figure (and even with your telling me its tehre and my enlarging it isn't recognizeable to me as a figure) I ahve to stare at the photo for a full minute... but as in life, the bright lights in the photo keep me from seeing what is in front - I have a serious problem with glare ... .. So what i see is only a little white line that I guess must be the book... KInda a nice film noir effect there anyway... I think I could probably see it in a print. ann frank theriault wrote: On Tue, Nov 3, 2009 at 10:28 PM, ann sanfedele wrote: OK - Is this perhaps NOT the photo you meant to show??? Hi! Is it important for you to know what she is doing? How do you feel the lack of context you both mentioned? Yes, I'd like to see the book in her hands... How do I feel? I cannot really describe it. It is kind of feeling when you see something and realize something else is missing. This time it was easy, because I had a title and because you told explicitly so. Bruce, thank you very much for your thoughts. I regard your answer even higher because it's the only one I have got, and I confess I'm slightly disappointed. I appreciate that you like the tonality, I just recently started doing B&W on my own, and it's fascinating to make results visible. later this year, I'll take a course on darkroom printing, to which I'm looking forward. By now, it's a very hybride process making the negs visible, and I posted this shot very spontaneously because I was so happy about the way it came out scanning it in a new way. Of course the lack of context is mysterious, but isn't that attracting, in a way? of course I know what she was doing, but I try to forget and to figure out at what she might be looking this way.
