Speaking of tripods, do you always use a dedicated mount for it (aka Wimberley Head, or that Manfrotto cradle-thing)? I'm in two minds over whether the Wimberley Sidekick is sufficient when mounted on the 55mm ballhead from ReallyRightStuff. Re: PESO - Another 600mm shot
Thanks Bob! There were 3 gulls hanging out together, interacting all the time. I think it was a male/female couple with an apprentice male tagging along. Occasionally, two of the gulls would start fighting (I wasn't able to discern the female from the other two by appearance), but it never took long before one of them stopped it by displaying submission. I hadn't really learned to see the signals of the beginning antagonism, however, so I missed all the ops for a good fighting shot. But that's definately something I'll be looking to learn about next time. Jostein 2008/6/17 Bob Sullivan [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Jostien, Wonderful shot of the pair. Looks like a posed set-up. Re: PESO - Another 600mm shot
I use a dedicated tripod mount for the 600. The tripod is a Gitzo 1548 carbon fiber the mount is a Kirk King Cobra. I figured after spending this much for the lens, I wasn't going to take the cheap way out for support. I also drape my left arm over the barrel to lessen vibrations. Sometimes I drape a coat/vest. When the shot allows I keep the tripod height to a minimum to maximize rigidity. All in all it is a fabulous lens as you are finding out, worth the effort for the right image. I had been to Denali numerous times and never felt I had the correct equipment until my last visit when I had the 600. Re: PESO - Another 600mm shot
I haven't decided about bringing along my trusty ol 500/4,5 or not. My legs sais no, my lust for close framing sais yes. On second thoughts. There will probably be two FA* 600/4 at the cliffs that weekend. I think I'll simply be a free loader ;-) MaritimTim 2008/6/17 AlunFoto [EMAIL PROTECTED]: 2008/6/16 Ken Waller [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Nice shot but I take issue with your blog ;+] The only times I'm reminded of its physical size are when taking the eye away from the viewfinder, and when the AF occasionally start hunting. I'm reminded of the physical size every time I need to move mine. Lol... Of course, you have a very good point there. So far it still has the novelty factor with me, which place the load into a different mental category... I guess the weight reminder will hit me full force when meeting up with Tim at the end of the month for some serious seabird photograpy. I guess the weight reminder will hit me full force when meeting up with Tim at the end of the month for some serious seabird photograpy For me it really hit home in Denali, while tracking a herd of Caribou across the tundra for a few miles - doubt I'll ever do that again. I kept it set up on the tripod for quick use even though I have a nifty back pack for it. It was worth the effort though.
