Speaking of tripods, do you always use a dedicated mount for it (aka
Wimberley Head, or that Manfrotto cradle-thing)?
I'm in two minds over whether the Wimberley Sidekick is sufficient
when mounted on the 55mm ballhead from ReallyRightStuff. It worked
fine with this shot but then again there was ample light and not much
vibration to expect at 1/3000s...

The Sidekick scores high on solution flexibility and low weight, though.

Thanks Bob!

There were 3 gulls hanging out together, interacting all the time. I
think it was a male/female couple with an apprentice male tagging
along. Occasionally, two of the gulls would start fighting (I wasn't
able to discern the female from the other two by appearance), but it
never took long before one of them stopped it by displaying
submission. I hadn't really learned to see the signals of the
beginning antagonism, however, so I missed all the ops for a good
fighting shot. But that's definately something I'll be looking to
learn about next time.

Re: PESO - Another 600mm shot

2008-06-18 Thread Ken Waller
I use a dedicated tripod mount for the 600.

The tripod is a Gitzo 1548 carbon fiber the mount is a Kirk King Cobra. I
figured after spending this much for the lens, I wasn't going to take the
cheap way out for support.

I also drape my left arm over the barrel to lessen vibrations. Sometimes I
drape a coat/vest.
When the shot allows I keep the tripod height to a minimum to maximize
rigidity.

All in all it is a fabulous lens as you are finding out, worth the effort
for the right image. I had been to Denali numerous times and never felt I
had the correct equipment until my last visit when I had the 600.

A link to my blog this time, hope you don't mind.

Yesterday I felt more comfortable with the 600mm, but it takes some
time to get used to.
I also tried out using a Wimberley Sidekick on a ReallyRightStuff
ballhead instead of the much larger Wimberley Head. When trying out
the difference at home, the dedicated Head seemed less prone to
vibration than did the Sidekick, but I don't think it mattered much in
the afternoon sunlight yesterday.

Thanks for looking,

For me it really hit home in Denali, while tracking a herd of Caribou across
the tundra for a few miles - doubt I'll ever do that again. I kept it set up
on the tripod for quick use even though I have a nifty back pack for it.

It was worth the effort though.

 Thanks for looking,
 Jostein

Nice shot but I take issue with your blog ;+]
The only times I'm reminded of its physical size are when taking the eye
away from the viewfinder, and when the AF occasionally start hunting.

I'm reminded of the physical size every time I need to move mine.
