John - keep reading the thread... :-)  answer there and a nice link

I knew exactly where i was but not the name of individual peaks in the
range. .. and I always do keep ALL the frames when I was shooting
chromes , even if they are lemons, for the reason you mentioned.. in
addition to extensive notes ... because i was shooting a lot for stock
and I had to submit all info...

Dan and an Ansel Adams photo I saw on line got me a suitable answer..

You and I both often answer the original post, rather than the replies
that people make who saw the post before we did...  I can tell or

you wouldn't have asked the question :-)

Not a distraction though ..

Re: Peso-Mystery Duck

2016-08-17 Thread John

Might also be a hybrid with a domestic duck someone abandoned to the
wild. I've seen that around here with Mallards.

Someone gets their kids ducklings for Easter & by mid-summer they've
released them on one of the local flood control lakes.

By the next summer, the domestic ducks have taken up with local Mallards
that stay here year round & there will be ducklings that almost look
like Mallards.

walls aren't steep enough.

When the "local" Air Force Base here has an open house they usually
bring in a C-5B for the static display. Just let down the front and rear
ramps and there's no waiting in line.

The cargo bay on the C-5 could hold 6 Greyhound/Trailways buses.

It's like walking through a tunnel on the Blue Ridge Parkyway, only
slightly more roomy & no worries about traffic. But I don't think the
C-17 has the tilt up nose to make that possible.

Yeah, since the RAAF bought a few of these they regularly fly in and out
of Richmond RAAF base about 10 km away. So far none have flown directly
over our house (as the C130s do often) but one did do a low pass over
the Windsor golf course about a year ago while I was teeing off. Made a
right mess of that shot, although I wished I had something similar I
could have blamed for messing up the other 90 or so shots

You're the closest... it's the cargo door of a C-17 Globemaster III.

I've put some extra photos up on the same page.

http://www.multi.net.nz/mystery/

During summer the US Antarctic Program uses one of these planes to ferry people
and supplies from their base at Christchurch Airport down to Antarctica. They
held an open day on Saturday to let the public have a look at the plane. It
was very popular and we had to queue for ages. The line was moving very slowly
and we only got halfway through the cargo hold before we had to turn back and
leave to make a lunch appointment.

They did a low flyover almost right over my house on Friday. It makes quite a
noise... I wouldn't mind seeing it take off.

Ann, my wife ID'ed this as a Kalanchoe, a common houseplant.
Apparently pretty good outdoors in planters as they survive neglect.

It's frogspawn coral shot through algae that had been gone over by a

almost a checkerboard pattern, which I guess means that the algae

PESO: Mystery Blossoms

2008-05-21 Thread Jack Davis
While visiting our daughter and family a few days ago, I got to photo poking
around their property. Daughter didn't remember the name of the pictured
blossoms, but the combination of colors are intriguing to the point I,
obviously, thought I'd post a shot.
Any comments certainly welcome and will be grateful if someone can identify the
plant.
I realize that the plain of focus falls somewhere in the center of the branch.
I AE-locked on one of the blossoms near the top.

2007-01-13 Thread Alastair Robertson
Well you guys came up with some great captions for this shot - very
witty - I think my favourites are Paul's lost trousers, Bob W's lost
Englishmen, and Stan's aperture simulator sighting!I can now
reveal the real answer - Ken was on the right track - this is New
Zealand's famous hotwater beach where at low tide you can dig a hole
in the sand and hot springs bubble up. You can read about it here -
http://www.mercurybay.co.nz/activities/hotwaterbeach.php. I went
there when I was a kid and I think we were the only ones there. Now
it's in all the guides books and as you can see it's now hard to stake
a claim - it's like the old gold rush days!

I have just a noticed there's a problem with the homepage on our
soilbugs site (soilbugs.massey.ac.nz) - sorry if you had problems
getting there - should be fixed tomorrow.

They're English people who went on holiday to Rhyl. They decided to
dig their way through to Australia, and are now looking confused and
just a little bit miffed to discover that they missed, and arrived in
New Zealand instead.

PESO - mystery picture and a re-intoduction (I can now post threads again)

2007-01-11 Thread Alastair Robertson
Hi all

I've been at best a part-time list member and long-time digest reader.
In the past my work email was overwhelmed by the volume of mail on
the list and I had to cancel subscription. Now with a new GMail
account, I have plenty of storage in the inbox and can subscribe
again. And after a hitch with rich text format destroying my attempts
at posting a thread (sorted with the help of Doug), I can finally
launch my own threads.

This list has provided me with a wealth of information over the years
- there's so much collective knowledge and great photogs too.

My gear. I have had a bunch of pentax bodies over the years staring
with a ME Super, Program A and Super A, MZ5N, *istD, and since last
month a K10D. Primes include K24/3.5, M35/3.5, M50/1.4, A50/1.7,
FA100/2.8, A*200/2.8, Sigma APO 300/4, zooms 18-35FAJ, FA24-90/4,
FA28-70/4, F70-210. Several teleconverters, AF280T, AF140c, AF360FGZ.

Mostly I take nature photographs for work - see
http://soilbugs.massey.ac.nz for examples of this stuff (macro shots
of New Zealand soil invertebrates that my wife put together - I take
the photos).

Thought I would start with a PESO -
http://www.pbase.com/kiwibiologist/image/72906411 and a bit of mystery
one - you suggest a caption or explanation and we will see whether any
knows what's going on in this shot. Just a snap really, but I liked
the perverse scene.
