PESO 2017 - Sakura! - GDG

2017-12-27 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
On my own this evening, but a friend stopped by so we had a pint or two in the
hotel bar. Then Mona headed off home and I meandered up the street to the
Japanese restaurant for a bit of dinner.

That is really cool!
It has an unusual perspective / POV combined with reflectiong, which on
one hand makes it very interesting (and I love reflections), on another, -
makes it somewhat "uneasy" (i.e. challenging your brain), but in a good way.

I keep coming back to look at it for the second day.

Thanks for sharing,

Re: PESO 2017 - Shimmer - GDG

2017-12-22 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I'd love to do and see everything, but I know my limits about what I can take
in for a day or a half a day. Cobh sounds fantastic, but I'll need to book
another trip here to see all of that. I can't take in so much in one outing,
and we'll likely have two to four hours there at most on this round. Presuming
we get there, I'll see if I can see one thing and get a photo or two worth
sharing...!

LOL! Oh, I know what you mean. I've kind of gotten used to the fact that I'll
just not be able to understand a good bit of what's going on, particularly when
there's a bunch of energetic Leprechauns bantering about at high speed together
sitting at the table. It's amusing as all heck to listen to them, regardless. I
participate as best I can... :-)

Cobh is perhaps the most colorful town in Ireland, and it has escellent
museums on the Irish Famine, the emigration, the Lusitania and the
Titanic. St Coleman's Cathedral sits on a hill overlooking the town and
the harbor. When we were there, we saw a wedding in progress and evn
managed to get the bride, in her white gown, in one of our photos.

When we were last in Cork, I couldn't understand most of the locals. Their
brogue is very heavy, and they use a lot of local expressions. The radio
announcer announce the time as "Tree Turdee."

Re: PESO 2017 - Godfrey On Travel - GDG

2017-11-29 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
LOL! Thank you both.

I must have been the most oblivious person back then. I never thought I was
that attractive, didn't realize that I was gay until fifteen years later. I
just always wondered why my relationships, such as they were, never went
anywhere. My buddy Harvey saw this photo shortly after I bought the new
motorcycle and said, "Damn, you were one hell of a cutie then!" I turned to him
and said, "If someone, ANYone, had told me that back then, it would have saved
me from fifteen years more confusion."

Ach, such it is.

Anyway, it was such a joy to be out on the road again and feeling great. Can't
wait for next season when I can do some traveling on the motorcycle too.

The trip was not without its costs: I just dropped the car off at the detailed
for a thorough cleaning, polish, and wax to get rid of the last of the calicchi
mud on the undercarriage from New Mexico, and to repair the damage to the
finish (and blow the half ton of dirt out from under the hood) caused by the
wind/sand storm at the Nevada/California border. And I just ordered replacement
rear tires—burned them down to the carcass with all the high speed, coarse road
surfaces.

I'll get to more photos after I get back home this afternoon. I noticed a few
more that I liked when I did a quick review yesterday. :-)

Thanks, yes it's extraordinary how painful it is. My present bout has almost
cleared up, thank God. I take allopurinol daily to keep the uric acid levels
down. During this flare-up I was given a course of colchicine, and also have a
course to keep on standby.

2017-11-29 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Bob,

Thanks!

Ugh, you've been busy with medical horror. Sorry to hear of the gout … I get
that occasionally too, it really and truly sucks. It's been a while since a
flare-up hit—I take great pains to avoid them. Hopefully it will pass quickly
and you can get back to "life as it ought to be."

Getting home again consumed most of yesterday, but I did get out on the
motorcycle for a few errands and then for dinner with my moto friends. Damn, I
just love to ride two wheelers, whether powered or not! Racer is just such a
happy machine, he loves to rev and rev. Today I have a 15-20 mile bicycle ride
planned, depending on how late it is when I drag my butt away from my desk;
there's still a bunch of stuff to manage preparatory to the holiday trip coming
up.

It would be great to go for a bike ride over there … or for you to head over
here for a ride. I know the local bicycle shop does rentals. We have to think
about that for some time in the future when you're fit again … and I'm more fit
so I can keep up with you! :-)

(I'll be over to Ireland and the Isle of Man for the X-day/New Years
festivities, but I had to defer travel to your locale until the next trip. So
the opportunity might arise later in 2018.)

Feel better,

Thank you for noticing!

I've gained about 10-15 lbs of muscle mass while losing 40+ lbs on the scale,
according to my physician. The ebike I bought in April shows 1000 miles on the
odometer now. When I got it, I needed the electrics to be able to ride at all.
Now I often go out for a 10-15 mile ride and forget to turn the electrics on…
:-)

My goal is to let go of another 60 lbs weight while continuing to increase
muscle mass, stamina, and flexibility. It's going at the rate of about 1 to 1.5
lbs per week; by next August I'll be near where I want at this rate.

I have a nice stitched panorama across the entire crater coming up. I should be
posting it in a day or so …

PESO 2017 - Godfrey On Travel - GDG

2017-11-28 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
While driving back from Houston, I stopped to see Meteor Crater in Arizona.
While there, I saw a guy who had a nice Nikon camera and looked like he knew
what he was doing with it. So I set up my camera for focus and exposure and
asked him to snap my picture. It worked! I thought this was one of the better
portraits of me made in recent years … and, stupidly, I forgot to get his name
and address so I could send him a thank you note. Doh! :-)

2017-11-16 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Hallo! Thank you for the compliments.

Ken, I actually did that on one rendering. To my eye, it lost something in the
process … so I put them back. I like the notion that they convey: that you're
at a public viewpoint looking out over the Coachella Valley and into the desert
beyond. They give a near-frame reference point to gauge the distance, at least
to my eye.

The original res merged raw file is both highly detailed and enormous—about
17,300x3700 pixels; about 57 Mpixels—so I'm going to see about making a 13x56
inch-sized canvas print. :-)

onwards!

Road trip to SoCal last weekend!

I drove out of Palm Springs on my way to San Diego heading south and west
on Hwy 74 over the mountains. This is the view back to the north from the
top of the ridge on Hwy 74 looking towards Palm Springs and the Palm
Desert. Time is about 8:45 in the morning.

Very interesting and very colorful.

When I worked for a bank, we had a building with offices in the basement.
One of them had only a small high window and tended to be damp. The
occupant called me in to look at the corner, where several small mushrooms
were growing out of the carpeting.

I have an image of that somewhere, but probably not digital or findable.

I first met Moss at a Saab press dinner at Hilton Head. Eric Carlsson,
Saab's rally star, was there, and would take the journalists for hair
raising rides the next day at a Georgia racetrack. (He put one car on its
roof with a scribe seated beside him and teased me because I politely
declined an invitation to try for rollover number two.) Anyway to get to the
point, Eric's sister was the wife of Stirling Moss, so Eric had invited them
to the Hilton Head bash. As journalists pressed Moss for tales of his days
behind the wheel he would steer the conversation back to Carlsson and Saab.
And of course there are plenty of Eric "on the roof" Carlsson stories out
there. Good guy, Moss. Carlsson too.

Re: PESO 2017 - W196 - GDG

2017-06-10 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Thanks Paul!

Yes indeed, got it on all points: 1954-55, #16 was Stirling Moss—I verified
with Michael Riedner's "Mercedes-Benz W196: Last of the Silver Arrows". And the
car was noted to be on loan from the Indianapolish Motor Speedway Museum. A
beautiful thing indeed, and the car of my greatest fantasies when I was a child
along with the 300SLR and 300SL Gullwing coupe.

I've been a W196 groupie for a long time. ;-)

There are so many amazing things about these cars… I didn't expect to see one
this morning. Canepa Motors is kind of a Porsche mecca, but as soon as I saw
the W196 I was done there. After seeing it, all the Porsches and other exotica
looked the same to me. I just wish I'd had the presence of mind to knock the
ISO setting up past 200 to get a little less camera motion blur. I was too
excited to see it…! I didn't even think to switch to the 35mm lens, just made
two exposures with the 50mm and stitched them together. It was as if I believed
the car would evaporate before my eyes.

such it is.

Nice. Excellent photos for a display setting. It is of course one of the
1954-55 Grand Prix cars. I believe the 16 car was driven by Stirling Moss. It
usually resides in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. But is often loaned
out for shows. It dominated Grand Prix racing until the horrific accident at Le
Mans led Mercedes to quite all motorsports. It is notable for many reasons, but
perhaps most importantly, from a technical point of view, is that it was the
first car to use direct fuel injection, which didn’t become an industry norm
for another 60 years.

PESO 2017 - Lamborghini - GDG

2017-05-15 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Something a little different…

I was going through one of my boxes marked "Old loose prints - 1960s to 1980s"
and found all of the photos I made of the Lamborghini 350GT that I owned in
1975. The originals are only small machine prints and not terribly great
quality at that… But I scanned them, did a minor bit of color correction, and
composited them into a nice little display (along with the snap I scanned a few
years ago of me driving the car) that I can frame and hang in my office next to
my 1:43 scale model car collection. :-)

  https://flic.kr/p/ULXHTA

Seeing these photos brings back a ton of memories!
