I like the pics--both are very evocative. Since Conrail snuffed it years ago, you must be referring to Connecticut Shore Line East as the operator. I've seen (and heard, and smelled) a few of their trains go by, and all three senses indicated that they were diesels. Why they should be running diesels on electrified lines is a mystery. Re: PESO(s) -- Three unrelated pesos.
It is Milford CT. There are a number of old diners in a number of towns that I haven't visited lately that might or might not be neglected or being restored. There was one in Middletown CT where I ate a central Connecticut "delicacy", (steamed hamburgers), for the first time 12 years ago that seemed to have been abandoned not long after that. I think it was still there, unoccupied, on my last stop in town, but didn't take the time to stop to be sure. It's a small early streamline dining car style, IIRC, special more for it's location than anything else. Next time I'm up that way I'll try to get a photo. My main reason for being in Milford was to stop in at Milford Camera, not that I can actually buy much there, they carry everything but Pentax, and much as a number of EVIL cameras are tempting, I need another system like I need an extra hole in my head. Wonder of wonders they actually had something that I did buy, a twenty pack of 11x17 Inkpress photo paper, at half price. They had an interesting tale to tell, the Inkpress paper just wasn't selling, (I don't know why, I've been using it for larger prints for several years with very good results), so they decided to change over to Ilford for inkjet papers, just in time for Ilford Imaging to go bankrupt. They didn't have any fire sale prices on Ilford inkjet papers unfortunately. Now they're going to be carrying Hammermill. On 12/17/2014 8:45 PM, Daniel J. Matyola wrote: All are very fine images. All are very fine images. Black dogs are very difficult to photograph, but you make it look easy, and of course I am please to see the dines and to hear it is being restored. I assume this is the one in Milford, CT, rather than the one in PA, DE or NJ. (BTW, the link in your post is brokent; I got to the image by copying and pasting the entire URL, rather than just clicking the link, which didn't work.) Re: PESO(s) I have but one Egret...
I'm all about learning new stuff, so I appreciated P.J.'s correction (in the thread above). This led me to a little Google-Fu workout and I thought I might share something that might be of interest to the Photoshop users of the group. This little plug-in is free to try, but only works on images up to 800x600. To use it on larger images, one has to pay the 15 euro shareware fee: http://flofilters.free.fr/ I have not used either the trial version or the full version yet, but I thought I would pass the info along in case someone has experience with it or would like to give it a shot. Cheap enough, if it does what it says. It seems it has been recommended by a lot of people over the years, but not mentioned much in recent years - so maybe there is a better tools (or one that comes with post-processing software?) I know, the 18% gray is what I can use to restore detail as I chose. You're right, spot metering is truly a wing shooting sport. I use it for the occasional (OK, rare) accidental direct hit. Re: PESO(s) I have but one Egret...
Spot metering on the body would yield a bird that's 18 percent gray. Of course it's easy to bring out the white in conversion. But spot metering is not always practical with a moving target. I wouldn't go that way. Paul via phone > On Oct 4, 2014, at 1:49 PM, Jack Davis wrote: > > It doesn't have a very dark background, so matrix worked fairly well. It doesn't have a very dark background, so matrix worked fairly well. I'd guess that had you used spot metering on it's body, you would have gained the desired additional feather detail. I do think it's a good shot as is. Jack - Original Message - From: "P.J. Alling" To: "PDML" Sent: Saturday, October 4, 2014 9:37:27 AM Subject: Re: PESO(s) I have but one Egret... Re: PESO(s) I have but one Egret...
That's not CA that's sensor bloom. The lens itself exhibits almost no CA. Supposedly CMOS sensors have done away with blooming but I see it all the time in lens reviews, refereed to as CA, because well, CMOS sensors did away with bloom, but CA is almost always two color red/blue, bloom is purple or just plain white. Now I'm going into this because I'm really tired of seeing obvious sensor bloom in images and having it be miss identified as chromatic aberration, they are not the same thing. CA is caused by a lens defect, bloom can be exacerbated by having a high contrast lens with even a very good sensor. Neither of those things is a defect. The issue of removing the sensor bloom is another problem, I've never successfully been able to do that. If it's there I just live with it. RE: PESO - "S"
After calibrating my new IPS monitor, with the help of Bruce (no, that is not a conflict of interest!) there is more distinction. Surprisingly the monitor was not too far off just out of the box, but it was enough to be visible. I look forward to seeing the actual prints... Re: PESO[s] Railroad related PUG rejects
PJ, I especially like how the steam locomotive's wheel show. This is always hard to show being black on black. Being old and faded probably helps, but you still did a fine job. The 1890's swing bridge looks good. We have one of similar vintage in Rock Island, Illinois. I'd suggest including some closer-up photos of the ironwork. I'm always inpressed by the contrast between old and new bridgework. The old bridgework is like lace - holy with rivits holding it all together. The new bridgework is more like extruded plastic in special shapes, no economy in the use of steel. Regards, Bob S. On Sun, Feb 5, 2012 at 12:29 PM, P. J. The motion blur is a cipher. On one hand I think it could be very compelling, but it's also very tough to get right. There weren't any that I was completely thrilled with. As to your comment on cropping out the flowers on the first one. I understand, and that would in many ways be a stronger photo of Byron throwing Toby. The photo above the flowers is O Sensei, the founder of the art, and the reason I left it in, in this composition, is that it "places" the photo, not just in an Aikido dojo, but in our Aikido dojo. It's an interesting case of what makes a photo good for "anyone" versus what makes it good for "the inside audience". > > > > On Nov 19, 2011, at 11:35 PM, Larry Colen wrote: > >> As I mentioned in last night's Aaarrgghh post, our dojo is in the middle of >> belt tests.
