2020-11-11 Thread mike wilson
UK public phones required payment _after_ connection. There was a small pause
between connection and the noise to make payment, to allow the callee to recite
their number so that the caller knew they were through to the correct one.
Just enough time to get a terse sentence out with necessary information. I
rarely had to pay for a call until I got to university and had to make the
usual grovelling begging ones.

My parents suspected me to cause those high phone bills and put a little
lock into the dial.

So I dialled with the cradle. The next two phone bills were just as high
as before and the lock was withdrawn again.

Around 1968, we were on holiday in Yugoslavia and my uncle sent a
telegram that he had found a better flat for us (something you had to
wait years for). My father spent 3 whole days at the post office before
the call to my uncle in Cologne was put through.

By 1970 you still had to go through the German "Fernamt" for a call to
the South of France. Not to mention that it cost the skin off your

the final list is:

May: Alleyways

Jul: Weird

Re: PUG Themes for 2020

2019-11-11 Thread John
Cats also have paws (as do the bears at Grandfather Mountain). Maybe make it
"Animal Feet", then you can have chickens & horses & pigs & ...

The definitive Seagull portrait was posted as a PESO earlier this month (even if
it wasn't taken with Pentax equipment), so you'll have to find a different
waterbird. I got dibs on flamingos.

I didn't do it, I wasn't even there, nobody saw me, it was somebody else who
looks like me, you can't prove nothin' ... that's my story & I'm sticking too it.

Waterbirds - I live on the coast. To me, waterbirds can only mean
seagulls. I Hate seagulls.
Framed - I was the youngest in the family. Always got framed for the
crimes of others. Still too traumatic...

Meanwhile in the #altPUG themes list for 2020

Anxiety
Anguish
Desperation
despondency
Gloom
Melancholy
Misery
Pain
Wretchedness
Ordeal
Unease

Thanks, Brian

Themes like Symmetry, Fenceline & Straight lines have little appeal to me.

And welcome to the 50+ club - may the party continue!

Re: PUG Themes for 2020

2019-11-11 Thread Henk Terhell
I hate this habit of phone picture taking of Food dishes in restaurants,
so I'd rather not take my Pentax out for Food.

Food can be photographed on a Market place - that is on the list.
Further, Paws and Fenceline do not appeal to me.
For me Birds would do rather than Waterbirds. Though there are plenty
around here I got no long enough lens for this.

Re: PUG Themes for 2020

2019-11-10 Thread Stanley Halpin
Thanks Brian for your continued attention and effort! And congratulations on
your 50th! I always find it impressive when any couple finds it possible to
keep going and going and going. Meg and I are coming up on 35 years next year,
and we may also make it to 50.

Of your candidate list for next year, my least favorite:

> Paws
> Weird
> Waterbirds

I will concede that paws on waterbirds would indeed be weird… Seriously,
waterbirds seems too limited, paws likewise, and weird is too likely to provoke
selfies from this group.

Of the others, my least preferred is fence line. Been there, done that, have
multiple images that fit. A more general, more challenging variation might be
Diagonals.
Another you might want to consider, 2020 or future, would be a different
geometric concept: Square. I occasionally crop to a 1:1 format, I have read
that one of the “issues” with effective use of 6x6 cameras like Hasselblads
and similar was learning how to visualize Square rather than the typical
asymmetric 2:3, 3:4, etc.
