Re: Changing focusing screen om Pentax 67II?

2012-01-22 Thread Jens
I did change the screen - no problem - in my Pentax 67II.
But the screen came without the black frame. So I had to exchange the old one
with the new Plit Field Screen.
The creens are very easy an convenient to change if it comes in a frame.
Is it possible to get empty frames or frames with a screen?

2006-11-03 Thread Bill Lawlor
Matt, I had an early Pentax 6X7, the one without mirror lock up. The
standard 105/2.4 lens was superb in every way. When I got a late model 55mm
I was even further amazed. Working in a chemical darkroom yielded beautiful
prints, color and black and white. If you are going to scan images the $500
class of flatbed scanners will do good work. It will take an expensive drum
scan to equal an optical enlargement when print size gets over 16X20. You
know to get a solid tripod and ball head and a bag of rocks to hold it down.
Even with MLU camera motion can be a problem because of the big horizontal
focal plane shutter.Eventually it was the weight of the gear that got to me
when I started doing more travel photography. I have a pair of lightweight
Fuji rangefinders in 645 when I need MF.
I have a good 90mm enlarging lens I'll part with if you are interested.

Good luck, Bill Lawlor

Looking into getting a pentax 67II

2006-11-02 Thread Matt Johnson
Well as i stated in the subject line I am looking into getting a
pentax 67II, I'm a photo major in college and have recently been
usinga 4x5 in the lighting studio, now that I got a taste of larger
negatives I want a medium format. I have been a long time user of
pentax(got my first k1000 se in 7th grade), and i still shoot 35mm via
my LX. I've done some reading on the 67 and understand that vibration
and a slow shutter sync are two major draw backs. I primarily want the
67 for outdoor photos where i dont wanna take my 20D, as well as some
studio work as well. but the 20d can work in the studio well too. So I
was hoping to get some feed back from owners on dealing with camera
shake, fill flash, and the slow shutter. Is handholding such a problem
that I wouldn't be able to use 400iso film, and lets say the 105mm
lense for for handheld shots around town?

The vibration problem is greatly exaggerated. It's the product of
some photographers who tried to shoot with long lenses, long shutter
speeds and flimsy tripods. You should have no trouble shooting
handheld outdoors with ISO 400 film. I've done quite a bit of that as
have others with no problem.

Vibration isn't an issue with the 6x7.
You should be able to handhold the 6x7 at slower shutter speeds than
35mm.
1/60th with the 105 is very doable.
Fill flash is enough of a bother that I use reflectors (not so good if
windy).
The camera is definitely not geared to fast moving action, so the
slowish shutter isn't normally a big deal, though I have a few pictures
that are kind funky because of it.

Matt,

I have run precisely one roll through a 6x7. It belongs to Cesar, and
he was kind enough to let me dash around the camp ground with it just
before departing from the GFM camera clinic in 2005. Metered prism,
hand held, either a 90mm or 105mm lens, FP4+, just after noon, and a
whole lot of giddy.

Re: Looking into getting a pentax 67II

2006-11-02 Thread Brendan MacRae
I've never had much of a problem with mirror shake
even with the 400mm. As long as you have a sturdy
tripod and use MLU and a cable release you should be
good. With shorter lenses you can get away with
shorter shutter speeds, even hand held, without much
problem especially with 400 speed film.

I hand hold mine with ease. I use the optional hot
shoe hand grip, mind you, but it's not a necessary
option to hand hold the camera (especially since it
has a built-in grip).

With the AF540FGZ flash I just set the camera to
Aperture Priority (puts the camera in Manual Mode
w/flash attached) and meter that way and use the flash
for fill. The flash is set to TTL when shutter button
is pressed halfway down. Seems to work well this way.
Here's two samples taken with just this set up, hand
held:

http://www.members.aol.com/bmacrae/k_n_t.jpg

*ignore the Newton rings by the bottom of the pic, I
didn't bother to re-scan...also, notice the slight
movement of the toddler's hand (@ 1/30 sec, it's best
if everyone holds real still)

P67II, 90mm, 1/30 sec, fill flash, warming filter,
Kodak Portra 400VC

one more:

http://www.members.aol.com/bmacrae/courtney.jpg

P67II, 165mm, 1/30 sec, fill flash, Kodak Portra 400VC

These are easier shots to get since they're both
outside. Inside under low light you'll have to watch
out for shadows and red eye. The 540 has a modeling
light which can be used as a pre-flash red eye
reducer. I'm not convinced that the flash is high
enough when mounted on the grip to be off-axis enough
to prevent red eye by itself.

 primarily want the
67 for outdoor photos where i dont wanna take my
 20D, as well as some
studio work as well. but the 20d can work in the
 studio well too. So I
was hoping to get some feed back from owners on
 dealing with camera
shake, fill flash, and the slow shutter. Is
 handholding such a problem
that I wouldn't be able to use 400iso film, and lets
 say the 105mm
lense for for handheld shots around town?

 Bruce

Not the kiss of death. If they called it a commemorative edition (LX Gold) I
would think differently. But since they call it a Limited edition, I have to
think that it is the end of the line for the Pentax 67. A lot of companies
come out with a limited edition as the last model of a particular product.

Perhaps they want to concentrate on the next generation 645 (digital back
anyone?) or the Mythical-magical Digital SLR.

I am more and more gravitating towards the 67II with the 45/4 and 75/2.8. I'm still
quite attached to the 645N but I cannot hide the fact that the constantly recuring
film flatnes problems with this camera bothers me. I had originally decided on
replacing the 645N with the 645NII and hoping that the new one have less of a problem
with film flatness. Also, buying two more lenses for it; the 35/3.5 and the 300/5.6.
This gives a five lens outfit (35, 45, 75, 120, 300 + perhaps the 1,4X converter) that
weight less than an F5 with 20-35/2.8, 35-70/2.8, and 80-200/2.8. This would be a
complete, manageable MF system. Something similar would be impossible with the 67II
while maintaining reasonable weight.
Using both the 67 and 645 systems is of course tempting albeit an expensive solution.
The idea is that I can use the complete 645 systems on more causual hikes when I'm not
sure of what I will shoot. The 67II will be used on more planned shots and also for
aurora borealis shooting. Both MF system will be augmented with 35mm gear.

To me it compares pretty favourably with the SMCP 35/3.5 for raw sharpness.
You definitely end up with a little more detail in the frame than with the
FA24/2.0 despite the wider coverage of the 6x7 lens (it is a little less sharp but
the format difference buys you more information).

I've only played with the 45mm a bit...it's nice. I'd buy one, but I

I agree. As a 6x7 user who lusts after the 67II, I found the review quite
informative and enjoyable.

More news about the Pentax 67II review

2001-12-05 Thread Mike Johnston

Michael Reichmann says he just got back from doing his first major shoot
with the P67II and that he'll be updating his review on Luminous Landscape
soon. I mentioned some of your comments to him and he says thanks.

Nefarious Pentax 67II Purchase Plan - Phase 2 Complete/Phase 3 Commencing

2001-02-24 Thread aimcompute

In my attempts to not get killed buying a Pentax 67II I have so far
accomplished the following:

Phase 1. Non-chalantly talk about the camera system with wife. "Yes it is
a lot of money". "No, I won't want another camera after this one." "Yes,
with the larger frame size I might be able to sell some work allowing it to
pay for itself". "That's not true, you'll get your new kitchen table, we'll
be able to build the retaining wall next to the house, don't worry."

Phase 2a. Purchase a portable stereo system and 6 CD's for her father and
have it shipped to his house as a surprise. "You're so sweet honey. I just
know he's going to love it. He never gets surprises anymore. I'm telling
him this was all your idea and I had very little to do with it. "

Phase 2b. Send my wife to go look for the kitchen table. Phone rings...
"They still have them. What size do you think we should get 5.5', 6' or
6.5'. Me: I think the middle size would be right for our kitchen, what do
you think? "I think so to she says". Me: OK, well see if they have one
that's in good shape and that you will definitely be happy with. Phone
rings again: "They have one honey, it's exactly the same tone as the
cabinets and I know I'll love it." Me: OK, go ahead and get it then.

Phase 3a. Why I'm at work on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Re: Where to Purchase Pentax 67II

Can anyone recommend a good mailorder place to purchase a 67II? Listed

Any chance of geting a better deal if purchased with finder and lens as
 opposed to body alone?

To give you a rough idea about prices, I could get you the 67 II body for
$2149 CAN (about $1430 US). The AE pentaprism finder would run about $770
CAN ($513 US), while a 105/2.4 lens would cost $649 CAN ($430 US). If you
wanted the hotshoe grip, that's $340 CAN ($227 US). So you could get the
body, grip, AE finder and lens for about $3900 CAN ($2600 US). I'm not
sure how that compares to US prices because I've never compared them. I
expect we're competitive, but we don't sell too many of these so it's hard
to say. :) If the price differnce is reasonably small, I'd consider
buying from a local store rather than mail order, provided that they at
least knew something about the camera. Good luck!
