I haven't been able to ride my bike, or jog or take any exercise for over a month. My plans to cycle to Paris and back had to be scrapped and I went by train. My physio told me this week that the problem I have is tarsal tunnel syndrome - it's the same thing that I thought was gout last year when it coincided with a kidney stone (gout and kidney stones have the same root cause). Anyway, now that we know what it is it can be treated properly and I can take steps (literally) to avoid a repetition, and the physio treatment is improving it. RE: OT - Minor Cycling Incident
How did the collision happen? The short version: Riding in the right lane of a four lane street. Just behind an suv. He stops but I don't have a chance to react - from where I was I didn't notice his brake lights. Before I know it an oncoming vehicle turns left in front of suv and in front of me. Turns out the suv waved him across. Because the suv was so large he blocked my view of turning car (and car's view of me). I slammed on brakes too late; t-boned him on the passenger door. Luckily I did have the chance to apply some brake and I also turned to the right. Meant that the front wheel and handlebars took most of the force and not the fork or frame. Yay! The sorest part of me is right where my messenger bag strap sits atop my shoulder so I don't know if the most serious of my injuries was from my shoulder ramming his car or the force of my bag full of groceries yanking down as I landed on my back on the pavement. Car got charged with illegal left, I got charged with illegal pass on right and I will fight it (brief research indicates I have a very good case - won't bore you with details). The car driver was very nice, apologetic and offered to pay to fix my bike (which as it turns out only needs the front wheel trued - less than $10 and I am not going to ask him for that small amount. Ashamed that we both got charged imho. He made a mistake and was apologetic and I know he learned his lesson. I did nothing wrong. Silly to make us both go through all of this... Anyway, that's that. Absolutely! As a cyclist I seem to make good use of our healthcare system! ;-) Of course the flip side is that as a very fit individual I tend not to get sick and with my healthy ticker will likely live a long, illness-free life, so in the long run I'd like to think that I'll be less taxing (pun intended) on our system than most. Whenever Americans get into the debate about universal healthcare some point to the flaws in our system, most of which have to do with wait times (including emergency room line ups). Yes, it was busy last night (Friday nights tend to be a busy time) but you know what? I was there for about 2 1/2 hours. In at 7:30 out at 10:00. That's registration, triage, a nurse for initial interview and vitals, first interview with doctor, x-rays and assessment/follow up chat with doctor. Quite incredible, actually. In maybe a half dozen emergency room visits over the past decade on one occasion I spent 12 hours on a very busy night when my hospital was the designated trauma centre for the region. I understand triage and accept that delay. Otherwise I don't think I've spent more than 4 hours in emergency, 3 hours being closer to my average. Our system works very well for acute situations. I admit that I have heard of (but not directly experienced) some horror stories wrt surgery wait times. As a cyclist I seem to make good use of our healthcare system! ;-) [...] Our system works very well for acute situations. I admit that I have heard of (but not directly experienced) some horror stories wrt surgery wait times. ours is pretty good at that, too - they were brilliant at treating my wrist when I broke it - and at the other extreme of dealing with things like cancer. As a family we've easily had our money's worth out of the system for cancer treatments. Where it's a bit crap is in dealing with some of the middling stuff. I saw about 6 different GPs over several years before one of them finally referred me to an ENT specialist when I was first dealing with cholesteatoma. Meanwhile each of them came up with different wrong diagnoses and treatments. Once I had the referral everything went brilliantly, luckily, otherwise I'd be dead by now. Similarly, I've been having these foot problems periodically for 3 or 4 years now, and it's only by by-passing my GP and going straight to a private physiotherapist that I've actually been given a diagnosis and some treatment that makes sense. I managed to get my current injury on ACC (government-run accident insurance) as my previous one, which I thought would only need a couple of physio sessions, cost me several hundred dollars over a few months. Unfortunately ACC seems to cover bugger all for this one and I'm having to pay for most of treatment myself anyway. Re: OT - Minor Cycling Incident
Gee that stinks. Still, it could have been a lot worse. And I'm glad the driver was good about it, too. Similar incidents happen here. I know of a couple of people who got pretty banged up when riding in a cycle lane during heavy traffic and someone waves a turning vehicle through. It's nearly happened to me a couple of times so I'm very careful around intersections. Good to hear you rode home, too. I attempted to ride home from the accident when I broke my collarbone (without knowing it was broken) but only lasted a couple of hundred metres so I walked a little over halfway before calling the Mrs to pick me up. I've yet to ride in an ambulance and I'd like to keep it that way. After treatment I read the label on the codeine pills they'd prescribed me, which said to limit alcohol intake. It didn't say what the limit was, nor whether it was meant to be an upper or lower limit :) Cheers, Dave On Sep 22, 2012, at 4:33 PM, knarftheria...@gmail.com wrote: Could have been a lot worse but I collided with a left-turning car this evening.
