Thank you, Rick.

I've wanted to learn the art of using bokeh well for a while now. I'm

Thanks, Bob!

I was actually a little distracted by those highlights myself. I'm
pretty ham-fisted when it comes to tweaking specific areas of images,
unfortunately. In fact, I'm a bit of a dunce when it comes to most of
the functions of Photoshop and other similar software. Here's my

better blending of the colors.

RE: PESO: Mimosa Sunset

2011-08-15 Thread Jeffery Johnson
After I wrote and sent my comment, I remember doing the same thing when it
comes to spotting things that normally are not obvious. Especially after I
have gotten back into taking captures. It also helps that while out on my
nature walks I am always trying to keep an eye out and trained on areas of
the woods that are different colors or shadows that are moving about and the
different sounds around me.

Thanks, Jeffery!

If it hadn't been illuminated the way it was against a fairly bland
background, I'd have never seen it. I mean, the sun was hitting it
*just* right.

Re: PESO: Mimosa Sunset

2011-08-16 Thread Bruce Walker
Walt, as I have shots with the same issue and I wanted to see how hard
it is to fix, I took the liberty of attempting to tweak your pic.
Here's my quick and dirty result:

  http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2254722/mimosa-walt.jpg

It's a bit over smudged. If I took a bit more care (and was a better
artist!) it'd be more convincing. But it's enough to prove it's not too
hard to do.

Here's what I did in Ps (CS5):
- create new blank layer
- choose a soft Brush (0% hardness), opacity 100%, flow 10%
- Option-click (Alt-click) over a nearby bokeh colour (to set the
painting colour)

- lightly paint arcs and circles over the offending white area
- rechoose the painting colour (Option/Alt-click) frequently to get
varied texture

I also did a little cloning with the clone brush set similarly (with
Sample all Layers set), just to get a bit better texture.

I ran a Gaussian blur pass over the painted and cloned layer to smooth
my fixes out a bit, and reduced the opacity of the layer a smidge (90%
or so) to get a nicer blend.

Re: PESO: Mimosa Sunset

2011-08-16 Thread Walt Gilbert

Thanks for the hints, Bruce! I've marked this email for future reference.

I took another whack at it last night using Picasa's "Retouch"
function. It was a little tedious, and the results were less than
stellar, but I do think it was a bit of an improvement. Here's the attempt:

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/6050069620/

I think the area looks muddy compared to the surrounding bokeh, but at
least the highlight is knocked down a little. I'm sure it would've come
out better using Photoshop, but Picasa offers simplicity at the expense
of meticulousness.

Thanks again for the input. I've really got to learn to use more of
Photoshop's functionality and this will help.

Again, I had the K-50/1.4 on the K-x:

You're making up for time spent not taking pictures, another keeper.

Well, one of the requirements for a photographer is to have an eye for the
subject/composition and your Mimosa image certainly shows you have that.

Ken,

That would require a real photographer, and I'm just not ready for that

Re: PESO: Mimosa Sunset

2011-08-26 Thread Walt Gilbert

Thanks, Tim!

Unfortunately, all the blossoms are off that tree now. It really is a
great one to have for a photographer, since it attracts LOTS of
butterflies. I just wish it were located in my back yard instead of in
my front yard, right next to the road.

Re: PESO: Mimosa Sunset

Thanks, Marnie (one of my favorite names of all time, BTW -- very lyrical.)

The thing I liked most about it was the way the bokeh treated the light
on the nubs around the little green stem/bulb-type thingies.
