Hi Bob ... you're gonna get the hang of using the new camera pretty soon,
it seems. Practice, practice, practice.

Seems that you like the DS - do you see it as replacing film for you?

Shel,
I'm not convinced that the *ist DS is a replacement for film,
but it sure is a lot of fun. And it is very close to a replacement.
The quality is good, better than my scans of Kodachrome.
Plus it would have been $125-$250 in film costs...essentially free.
I'm having trouble reviewing all the images and finding the best.

For a snap, it's pretty cool - just wait until I get my CNE Airshow
snaps back if you want to see blurry airplanes (and I don't mean "good
blur") <. I love airshows, and yours captures the spirit of
them.

G'day Paul,

"To the sea" doesn't do much for me. I'd suggest bumping up the
brightness & contrast a bit though.

"Invitation" on the other hand I really like. Very colourful and
inviting I had a bit of a play in Photoshop & it also looks really
good rendered in B&W

To the Sea kind of bothers me for a couple of reasons. First, it
seems to tilt to the right just a bit. I know, you can't really see
the horizon, but still, it just doesn't seem right in the "level"
department, and I actually find it disquieting to look at for that
reason.

Second (and I could be wrong here), the sharpest elements in the photo
seem to be the bare branches on the upper right. The background seems
not to be terribly sharp. There's just not enough strong elements in
the foreground to justify such focusing, IMHO.

But, I could be wrong.

Now, "Invitation", to me, is a very strong photo. It drips of Small
Town Americana. I expect Opie to come running out of the door any
minute, or maybe to hear Calpurnia to holler out the window, "Scout,
Jem, come in for breakfast, I made biscuits and gravy!" or something
like that. A very strong composition, with everything seeming to fit
together just so.

Great title, too.

Again, batting .500; not a bad average.

cheers,
frank

I like the "To The Sea" - it does seem that you haven't blown the sky

Re: PESO - "S"

2012-12-04 Thread Bruce Walker
Jack, I've been studying a lot of B&W studio work lately. Here I was
going for an almost abstract look -- outlines, areas of (almost) solid
tones, skin pale, hair dark, etc. So I cranked the whites way up and
the darks way down, leaving the midtones almost empty.

There _is_ definition in the lights and darks but you have to look
very closely, and have a calibrated IPS display too. :-) I intend to
print this image to get the full effect. I expect to have to to a few
runs to get it right as it probably pushes the paper/ink abilities.

For more subject definition you may prefer the original colour rendition ...

Re: PESO - "S"

2012-12-04 Thread Bruce Walker
Basically, yeah, the faint tonal differences are intentional. But my
first cut had more separation; the version you saw had been tweaked to
push the whites right up close to 100% which flattened the tone curve
near the top. I backed that off and restored the original version once
again, so have a look at it now. It's subtle, but the outline of her
arm is visible.

As I said to Jack, you need you monitor to be well calibrated as I
push the tones at both ends of the scale, without blowing them out.

And here's the tonally less extreme colour version ...

After calibrating my new IPS monitor, with the help of Bruce (no, that is
not a conflict of interest!) there is more distinction. Surprisingly the
monitor was not too far off just out of the box, but it was enough to be
visible.

I look forward to seeing the actual prints...

As I said to Jack, you need you monitor to be well calibrated as I push the
tones at both ends of the scale, without blowing them out.

And here's the tonally less extreme colour version ...

That's a nice shot, but because I'm slightly red/green colorblind, it's
harder for me to separate the flower/leaves. You seem to not be into
photoshopping, but this is the kind of thing where I'd be tempted to
make everything B&W except the flower.

Both terrific shots. You've used the fog to great advantage here.
Both shots well framed and composed, nice exposure, terrific mood.

I especially like the overhead branches framing the dock in #2.

I also took some shots with water and cattails recently, but w/o fog.

Red Mill - if it were mine I'd crop from the top down a little to eliminate
the sky in the center top.

Autcolors - the bit of railing along the bottom and the OOF branches on the
RH side are detractions to an otherwise well done image.

Subject: PESO s -- Seasonal Stuff

I got out to take a few photos today and decided to do some seasonal stuff.
The first is a Theaualtian exercise, (so I don't want to hear any
complaints about focus or camera movement, other complaints sure, I'll just
ignore them if I feel like it). The other two are more or less
conventional.

http://www.mindspring.com/~webster26/PESO_--_shesabeauty.html

A few people thought that there should be a tighter crop on my last photo
of this building so now that fall is here...

http://www.mindspring.com/~webster26/PESO_--_redmill2.html

Fall colors were a bit muted this year, but there were a few trees that
really stand out.

http://www.mindspring.com/~webster26/PESO_--_autcolors.html

All photos were taken with the *ist-D and smc Pentax 28-200 f3.8~5.6 IF AL
ISO 400.

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

Paul,
Cherry trees are a favorite.
2 came with the house we bought in Wisconsin.
28 years ago, I discovered orange birds working the cherry blossoms.
(While I sat with my baby son sleeping in my lap.)
They were Baltimore Orioles and it's the right time for them now!
We put out orange halves and would like to try jelly,
but have to figure out how to keep the squirrels and racoons away.

I've never seen Baltimore Orioles here, but just a bit south of here,
at Point Pele in Canada, they're abundant. Don't know why we don't
have some. Plenty of other birds however, but they don't seem to like
the hard little cherries that appear on this purely decorative tree.

Paul,
The Baltimore Orioles come for the blossoms (&bugs?) and are pretty shy!
They are more difficult to see here than in Racine, Wisconsin where we lived.
The former house had 13 fruit trees planted by a Univ of Michigan arborist.

I was at a birthday party last night and they brought out the poi to spin
fire.
I got a couple of decent shots. The first was a 0.8 second exposure, with
flash:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/5607313780/in/set-72157626344718447/

The second, when the fire was going out, was a 0.8 second exposure, no
flash, and a bit of post processing:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/5606729703/in/set-72157626344718447/

Both, FA31, f/4.5 ISO 100

Thanks, that's the one that was the obvious keeper when I was chimping them
right afterwards.

The second one is fun because at first, in the camera, it looked pretty much
like a throwaway, but thanks to the amazing K-5, I got something pretty cool
out of it, as well as ideas for future photos of fire spinners.

   Great shots, Larry!

I never quite got the hang of shooting the fire spinners while we were
out there. The closest I manage to get was near the end of the spinning
and was ruined by the fact that I'd zoomed in too tight so that the fire
left the frame and re-entered at the outer edges. Kind of a bummer.

Cool for you, though!

In the meantime here are a couple of images I was using for testing.
Taken with the *ist-Ds and FA 28-200, which was lousy on film, but
pretty good on APS-C digital and made a nice pairing with the FA 20-35

Well, Peter, you're going to hate me for this, but my fave of the
bunch is Egret Out of Focus. I think that's a really cool shot!
Don't know why, I just do. I like the other (in focus) Egret shot a
lot, too, especially the lighting.

The young seagull shot does less for me; I think it's the way the
horizon (or the beach on the other side of the water) sort of cuts off
his feet from his body - kind of distracting. The rest of it's well
composed though, with the wall and all...

The Canada Geese shot, well, you've documented the vermin soiling yet
another nice green space. It's what they do. I hate them. Just
looking at your photo, I can feel my blood getting hotter, beginning
to boil., they enrage me so.

Must calm down. Think happy thoughts. Little fluffy chicks and
kittens. Glasses of Beamish Stout. A, that's better...

cheers,
frank
