Wonderful photo!

How often does one have a chance to photograph one of the most famous
people in the world? You made the most of it, to be sure!

I saw a brief piece on him on a science show. His now famous
electronic voice is now very obsolete, insofar as it could be made to
sound much more "human". His is based on twenty year old technology.
He refused to change it, because it's what people are "used to" - in
other words, it's "his voice" now.

Anyway, terrrific shot of an icon.

Interesting indeed, Bob. However a bit awkward for the time being. The
number one domestic news headline here since Easter is the first
uncovered case in Norway of child abuse by a catholic priest.

Which of course neither you or Igor would have known...

So Igor, I'll stick to the dancing metaphor and thank you for the

I don't think that's the only meaning/connotation for that expression.
E.g. among dancers there is a phrase that a person has two left feet.
In some sports (e.g. board riding, and possibly jumping), it refers
to the actual thing (as opposed to "goofy" in snowboarding).

In any case, the religious connotation was not implied here.

Yes - that's the point that makes the Penrose tilings interesting
from a mathematical standpoint - they are aperiodic (the pattern
never repeats).

'left-footer' is a slang term for a Roman Catholic, probably slightly
offensive so if you use it you could end up with no teeth left.

Used mainly by protestants who I suppose must be right-footers, although
nobody uses the term. Protestants, according to my Catholic mother, are
called proddy dogs.

Petite build, to maximise performance? Check. Neck like an 800lb gorilla, so

I think they kept this sort of thing a closely guarded secret.
Coincidentally I was looking at a tiling program earlier this week, just out
of curiosity and because I like Islamic tiling. Whether or not they were
Penrose tilings I don't know - I'm not a mathematician - but the authors of
this software approach it from the mathematical point of view.

Then we paid up and left/

Very cool indeed!

I was somehow expecting the "kite and dart" Penrose tile, but that
one's nice.

I seem to recall that there are some medieval mosques with tiling
patterns that use Penrose tiling, so someone seems to have managed it
empirically. (At least; if they published back then, it is not known to
survive.)

Re: PESO - Famous Scientist

I saw him "speak" through a grad student about 30 years ago at
Harvard. While there's not question that I feel sorry for anyone in
that condition, he has lived a remarkably long time with ALS and has
essentially had a full career. What I find most interesting is that
his condition has denied him the ability to do math in a normal
fashion (pencil and paper) and has affected his thinking about
physics. I always wonder how his thinking would have differed, for
better or worse, if he had never gotten this disease.

Re: PESO - Famous Scientist

2010-04-07 Thread John Francis

I attended a lecture he gave here in the bay area around 10 years ago.
I was, of course, aware of his career from a much earlier date - I was
at Cambridge from 1968 - 1971 (reading Mathematics & Computer science),
which was when he (and Penrose) were redefining theoretical physics.
I never heard him lecture while I was at Cambridge (although I did hear
a lecture on Quantum Physics given by Paul Dirac, an earlier holder of
the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics that Hawking held). And I learned
the basics of astrophysics and relativity from Dennis Sciama - Hawking's
thesis adviser; he gave some lectures as part of the mathematics degree.

Here is yet another photo, - that of Roger Penrose, mentioned in my
previous message (right one, in a blue jacket).
In this photo he is actually giving a speach that he inspected
our tiling and was not able to find any errors in it
(as he frequently find them at other places that have installed
such a tiling).

http://www.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Mixed-2010/Penrose_and_Tile_IR_5500.jpg

To Bob W.:
One of my colleagues in the department took a very special
care of the tiling - designing and checking at all stages,
as the contractor would have not done the job right (if at all).
I doubt you'd be able to afford my colleague's consulting services
for your bathroom. :-)

Do you think he'd come round and do my bathroom?

He won a legal battle a few years ago against a toilet paper manufacturer
who used a Penrose tiling on their paper to make it less bulky when rolled.
They were judged to have stolen his idea, but I can't help thinking how
wonderful it would be if some junior bogroll designer had come up with the
same idea...
