Re: PESO: Flying the Flag

2014-09-28 Thread Ann Sanfedele
I like the plane and the sky - but sadly the flag somehow looks as if it
were added in photoshop. I gather the plane is pulling the flag
structure -- maybe if the drag line were clearer it wouldn't look

so articficial

what exactly was going on there, btw? Air show?

Re: PESO: Flying into the Sunset

Thanks, Igor.

I did take images of the sunset without the helicopter:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17822444
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17822443

I prefer the one with the helicopter, however; perhaps because of my
interest in aviation or because I take sunset images every evening
during our trips to Maui every winter. I will, however, try cropping
out the chopper from this image, to see if that improves it as you
suggest.

2014-07-29 Thread Igor Roshchin

Hi Dan,

I've been busy to write any comments, but I thought I'd quickly on
this photo.

First, it took me some time to figure out _who_ is flying.
Then, I realized what it was. I like the colors and the light, but
I think the framing is not that good to make a connection between
the helicopter and the sun.
If you didn't crop it, and hence don't have more around the helicopter,
I would actually consider chopping [!] it off completely, for a nice
picture of the sunset.

Cheers,

Igor

Re: PESO: Flying into the Sunset

2014-07-29 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Paul and Attila!
Yes, Paul, I agree that a longer exposure would have improved the
image by showing motion in the chopper blades. Unfortunately, we were
on the way to our car when I noticed the chopper heading into the
sunset, and I had only a moment to put down the other things I was
carrying, open the camera bag, and pick up the camera before the
chopper move out of this nice position relative to the sunset. I
don't think I even had time to check the camera settings -- I just
snapped and they it was out of position.

Not good for gout, but you can find plenty of historical recipes for it. I
would imagine the gizards taste nice as a confit:

Salt 1kg if them abundantly and leave to marinate 12 hours. Rinse and drain
them. Warm 1kg of duck fat, add the gizards and add 3 cloves of garlic in
their skins, a sprig of thyme and a bay leaf. Simmer gently for at least 1
hour. Check they are cooked, then let them cool down.

These will keep, covered in the duck fat, for up to a fortnight in the fridge.

In Britain all swans bilong Mrs. Kwin and I don't think she lets us eat them.

Re: PESO Flying Rat, European Version

2014-03-24 Thread Paul Stenquist
Mute swans are much prettier than geese, but in some parts of the U.S.,
including Michigan, they’re just as much a problem. They are not a native
species but were introduced from Europe many years ago and are considered
invasive. They multiply rapidly and have squeezed out the native Trumpeter
swan. They’re also very aggressive and have been known to attack people who get
too close to their nests. They bite and slap with their wings, which are
powerful enough to break a man’s leg.

Swans are supposedly good to eat, allegedly better than their close relative,
the goose. Some states have opened a swan hunting season. But most those who
wish to dine on swan go for the smaller Tundra Swans. Butchering a Mute Swan is
a big job.

Re: PESO Flying Rat, European Version

2014-03-23 Thread Alastair Robertson
correct me if I am wrong, but it is the maximum aperture of the lens
TC that matters on an automatic lens, not what you have stopped it
down to, since the AF is done with the lens wide open just before the
lens is stopped down and the shutter opens. So a setting of F22 on an
F5.6 setup will make no difference to the AF capability compared with
say F8. Putting a TC on a slow lens is a problem because even wide
open, the light levels are already too low for accurate AF. I doubt
whether Alan's F9-11 combination will allow AF because this is as open
as the lens can go

Very nice. The diffuse reflection adds a subtle impact.

But 'Flying Rat'? Seems a little harsh. Are they not widely loved?

I’ve tried autofocus at up to f22 with the 1.5X and the DA8 60-250, and it
worked fine, although that was with a high contrast scene.

They're a pretty foul fowl.

We have a number of flood control lakes around here that have been
turned into parks with green-way walking/riding paths around them.
Canada geese turn what could be a lovely evening's walk into a stroll
through a minefield. There's a reason "like shit trough a goose" became
a cliché.

It's especially bad where kids feed them bread.

Raleigh recently enacted an ordinance prohibiting feeding.

Might not be enough copyable content to do a decent job with CAF. You
need to mask out stuff you don't want cloned, like the goose and the
beach area, and there's not a lot of blue. I'd try simply stretching
the blue area upward a little. 5% likely won't be noticeable -- except
to us now that we're talking about it. ;-)

Re: PESO - Flying Rat

2013-09-07 Thread Bruce Walker
I like it. You've got him at a pretty nice angle and pose. I'm not
very fond of Canada Geese as our shores and parks are often overrun
with them. Very messy things.

Regarding Flickr: there's been a bit of a backlash against
Flickr-hosted PESOs of late. The user interface drives a few vocal
PDML members to distraction and several won't even go there. Trouble
is, there's no single photo-hosting site that makes _everyone_ happy
so you might as well pick one that works for you and stick with it.
I'd say the majority of PDMLers are okay with PESOs on Flickr.

One work-around for Flickr's annoyances is to post a Flickriver.com
link to your image instead of the native Flickr link. Flickriver's UI
is simpler and doesn't randomly toss you into an annoying Ken Burns
dizzying slideshow.

I too am a Flickr user for various reasons including it being well
supported in Lightroom.

Like it, Bruce. I'd have to try lightening the black on the upper neck and
head, especially the eye area. Defining the eye would bring it more alive.
The upper frame background is not what I'd chose, but like you, I'd settle for
it in this case.

balance to the image - without it, the left side felt a bit too open.

Anyway, take a look at the crop and see what you think.

Thinking that was likely the case, I tried cloning a crop that extended beyond
the bottom, but I found the swing cables to be too much of a problem. While I
imagine they could be tediously dealt with, however much I'd like it to be,
it's not my image.
It has now been deleted from my files.

I like the cropped version but I wonder (like Larry) whether it would
work better as a pure silhouette.

The object in the original didn't bother me at all, but I have to say
that the cropped/cloned out version has much more impact to me. I
prefer it to the original.

Based on several comments wishing to see the lower left hand object
removed, I have done so. I had originally felt that it gave some
balance to the image - without it, the left side felt a bit too open.

Anyway, take a look at the crop and see what you think.

Re: PESO - Flying Swings

Great shot. The noise in the sky actually works well in this shot.

It may be worth trying to raise the "black threshold" level to knock
down a little of the noise in the silhouettes.

I can't tell whether cropping the left side to knock out the mystery
shadow is worthwhile.

Interesting shot.
I agree with Ken in regard to the structure at lower left. A crop to square or
even vertical might work very well here.
