UK public phones required payment _after_ connection. There was a small pause
between connection and the noise to make payment, to allow the callee to recite
their number so that the caller knew they were through to the correct one.
Just enough time to get a terse sentence out with necessary information. I
rarely had to pay for a call until I got to university and had to make the
usual grovelling begging ones.

My parents suspected me to cause those high phone bills and put a little
lock into the dial.

So I dialled with the cradle. The next two phone bills were just as high
as before and the lock was withdrawn again.

Around 1968, we were on holiday in Yugoslavia and my uncle sent a
telegram that he had found a better flat for us (something you had to
wait years for). My father spent 3 whole days at the post office before
the call to my uncle in Cologne was put through.

By 1970 you still had to go through the German "Fernamt" for a call to
the South of France. Not to mention that it cost the skin off your

Re: PUG Themes for 2020

2019-11-11 Thread John
Cats also have paws (as do the bears at Grandfather Mountain). Maybe make it
"Animal Feet", then you can have chickens & horses & pigs & ...

The definitive Seagull portrait was posted as a PESO earlier this month (even if
it wasn't taken with Pentax equipment), so you'll have to find a different
waterbird. I got dibs on flamingos.

I didn't do it, I wasn't even there, nobody saw me, it was somebody else who
looks like me, you can't prove nothin' ... that's my story & I'm sticking too it.
