RE: Tele lens support

2006-02-08 Thread Don Sanderson
I see your point. :-(
It doesn't appear that the 3229 could be modified either.
However it looks as though you could replace the tilt head
with a small QR ballhead, then you could have the correct
orientation.
The only purpose of the tilt is to let the lens down to
rest in the cradle, since precision isn't required and you
only have to adjust once when mounting a lens one of the
cheap Chinese 484RC2 or 486RC2 type knockoffs should work
fine.

I own and use 141RC, 460Mg and 308RC heads that all share that

 aligned with
the camera. I currently use a semi-permanent QR L plate fixture

that it's a great idea but I still find their choice of QR plate
 orientation
 strange.

Interestingly of the six plates I own three show only one lens
 direction arrow
(pointing towards the long edge of the plate), however the latest
 two show two
lens direction arrows (perpendicular to each other), so I guess it's a
 relatively new thing.

I've tested that Manfrotto gadget. It's a great solution for any

Re: Tele lens support

2006-02-07 Thread Jostein

Hi Don,

I have one of those, and us it for various purposes. I bought it as
support for my 645-A*300/4, and I also find it indispensible for
extreme macro shots (1x).

It is a vast improvement from attaching the camera body to the tripod.

I really wish a similar gadget could be had for the Arca-Swiss QR
system, though.

Strangely they positioned the QR plate rotated 90 degrees relative to other
heads, not great for photogs that virtually have a permanently fixed QR plate.

That's because they are using the standard 3229 Tilt head
which would normally be mounted the other way.
It is odd but I don't think it'll be too bad.

I couldn't get the adorama URL to load, but BH has it too.

  or

It's a good unit. I've considered buying one several times, but don't
use long lenses enough to warrant the cost.
