There are also some interesting photo opportunities to be found among the local wineries. I'm afraid that I haven't been keeping up lately, but I used to really like Salamandre. Ahlgren did some amazing stuff, but Dexter Ahlgren had a stroke, and his daughter took over, and I'm not sure if the winery is still a going concern. If you like Zinfandel check out Rosenblum cellars in Alameda. Their open houses are really quite the event. Ravenswood makes some good stuff. Their motto is "No wimpy wines". I used to love their Icon, a rhone style red back when it was about $20/ bottle, similar to Le Cigare Volante from Bonny Doon. For an inexpensive wine, I used to really like Rabbit Ridge Allure. And no discussion of California wine is complete without at least mentioning Randall Grahm, of Bonny Doon Vineyards. My favorite of his wine names is "A critique of pure Reisling". Re: The PDML Annual has Landed
Hi all, I finally got my copy!!! It looks really good, I would say more finished than the first one. Hard to choose a favourite, too many good photos in so many different genres. As the one from last year, I'm enjoying it enormously -like I enjoy many good photography books that belong to my humble collection- starting with Doug's intro (in particular after the great nice surprise of seen my name there in the intro) up to the quotes (I like the non-PDML quotes addition, that one from Roger Ebert is phenomenal) and the whole design is not only functional (with the names on the side) but also attractive. Looks more and more that I won't be making it to Chicago, but at least I got to meet Ann in NY (and I got the Ann-Sanfedele-Gallery tour, a collection of her shots that remain in my memory). I've been swamped in work, and this time I accumulated a number of unrelated news: moved to a new place, my savings for the ever-elusive-printer ended up in a set of Klipsh speakers and a large plasma TV, got hooked up in collecting some classic movies (classic according to me), went back to my exploration of red wines (any Californian you can recommend?). And as every year the same pattern repeats itself in something that resembles a never ending cycle of photographic hibernation and renaissance, and now that summer is approaching, I find myself carrying my camera always with me once again (if I could just start pressing that shutter...) Anyways, is good to get the PDML Annual, in this tradicion that this second issue seems to be starting, these photos put me out of my recurring photographic hiatus, and remind me why I like photography so much. Pentax always reminds me of my father -whose Pentax camera outlived him- and by contributing to a cancer research organization I feel connected to the memories of my mother that passed away victim of that disease. Thanks to all the ones that participate by donating their photos and the team that puts this all together. This PDML annual is a reminder that is also good to enjoy photography as viewer, and as only photographers can do, by knowing how difficult is to get these shots, result of technical abilities, eye, readiness, and -specially in my case- mostly chance. -- http://www.flickr.com/photos/ferand/ On Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 10:06 AM, P N Stenquist wrote: > The PDML annual was left on my doorstop this morning. Re: The PDML Annual Has Arrived!
Most of the material that the gannets find are actually nylon ropes from all sorts of martime activities. Hard to collect for recycling. But of course there is debris blown onto the waves from land based households and enterprises too. Much of that is recycled, but far from all. One of the things I have a personal gripe with is plastic-wrapped heybales (aka. tractor eggs). Many farmers leave them outdoors for livestock to forage on when out. The animals tear off the plastic in pieces, which is then distributed with the wind. Re: The PDML Annual Has Arrived!
The trash we discard in the sea, the nets cut loose to ensnare dolphins, tuna, etc, are a disgrace. Worse yet are the plastic six pack (and eight pack) loops that get tangled up in birds legs and necks. At the dump primarily, but anywhere they are discarded. Please use a knife or scissors to cut every loop on those things (large and small) before they are discarded. Write to your local and state and federal representatives and try to get these things recycled instead of thrown away. Don't know if it does any good, but I use one of these to tie 25 or more together using the smallest hole, and cut all the other holes before placing them in the recycle bin. If your area recycles bundled plastic bags and/or gallon milk jugs, they may just recycle these items as well. Worth a try. I ordered mine standard delivery (FedEx Ground - least expensive) on the afternoon of the 13th Friday, was shipped from San Francisco on the 16th Monday, and received them in Everett (Seattle) on the afternoon of the 17th. I would suspect that Blurb might have a contract with several printers around the country with calibrated printers who crank these out and ship them 24 hours a day to get such rapid response times. Note that Marnie got hers the day after I did, and Mark was commenting on how quickly he got his proofs. Re: The PDML Annual Has Arrived!
I was notified at 00:41 on Tuesday, and received my two copies at 16:35 the same day (4:35 p.m. ladies). And must say it is put together with great care by the noble lackeys who took on the task. Both I and my neighbors were impressed by the scope of the images. WAY TO GO PDML members! I will leave the 2nd one in it's plastic pouch and have it incinerated with my remains when I go, to be interred in a cemetery in Massachusetts. I forget exactly where. But that doesn't matter, as I have little faith that my sisters will respect my wishes and use my estate to travel there and bury me. I expect I'll be allowed to billow out the window of one of their cars as it heads to the South Center mall for some shopping. ;-) Ahem. Thanks to you all for taking the time to contribute. I'm going through it for the fourth time this evening. Joe On Feb 18, 2009, at 16:29 , eactiv...@aol.com wrote: Wow, that was fast. Wonder if they are in California?
