Hi Peter, Doug and all,

Peter Jesser wrote:

Yes I have it. I didn't use it a lot but if you think it would be useful
I could post some samples to the net.
It doesn't seem so bad for me, but I have nothing to compare it to.
Is not a lens you can handhold very easily and the tripod collar is not
really sturdy but useful nonetheless. When I use it I try to keep it on
the monopod (Manfrotto) at all times.

 Not a Pentax in
sight until I saw this Tokina 400mm at the back. M42 mount (but that's no
problem with a converter) new, in its box, marked Was $310, today only
 $210. That's Australian dollars! I know it isn't top drawer, but I have a
new 400mm for about US $108.
 ...

The price is certainly interesting, although the screwmount makes it
slower to use.
I paid mine 199USD last year from KEH in BGN conditions.

So - if you have used one and can give me an idea of what to expect, I would
like to hear about it. I am not a professional, but some of my pics get
published with my hunting and conservation articles. I won't get to try it
 until next weekend.
 ...

It could be a good deal but at 5.6 is not a fast lens, especially since
you're supposed to stop it down a bit.
I think it could be a fair starting point.

Hope it helps, Flavio

I don't know how much better it is than the SMC version, since I've
never tried one. Right now, there are a couple on Keh's web site.
They range in price from US$484 for excellent condition to $616 for
excellent plus condition.

They're considerably more desirable than the SMC version in that they
have auto aperture and a far shorter minimum focus distance. I have the
SMC version, and it's a very nice lens, but I cover the A. A very nice
one went for $400 on ebay a few weeks ago, but I'm having to watch my
pennies at the moment.

Doug,
when you get around to trying it, please post your results here.
I am much interested how a semi-modern SD/LD/APO tele compares to
an older much simpler tele design I think the SMC K 400/5.6 is
according to Boz. Resolution wise and contrast-wise. I found
some older non-SD teles to have good performance, but that
was stopped down a bit (1-2 stops), and actually the lens was for
6x6cm format 4/300mm Pentacon (it's a damn best for the money lens
for 6x6cm you can get, it doesn't cost like a car or house g).

 good light!

Will do.

I can tell you that the Tokina SD is noticeably smaller and lighter
than the SMC.  About 20% shorter; 72mm filter instead of 77 or 78mm;
probably 25% or more lighter. I don't have the tripod mount for the
SD, though, so it might not make the October trip. It would be much
easier to handle than the SMC without its collar, though.

Plus the SD has the A setting for Tv shooting, which makes
motorsports photography a lot easier. For any spot on the track, I
generally want to force the shutter speed, so that the pictures end up
with a feeling of speed (wheels blurring a bit). The apertures for
that spot then move around maybe +/1 one stop as the lighting changes.

 [...] I found

I'll remember that. Stopped down should be no problem, though. During
daylight, when I'll be using the 400, I'll have to stop down (about f/8
to about f/22) to keep the shutter speed between about 1/125 and 1/500.
Dusk and night, I'll be using shorter and faster lenses.

Hi,

when you look at the Tokina 400/f5.6 with inner focusing, look at the out
of foucus areas. I did and had a big laugh. Really ugly quadruple images!
I'll stick to my Pentax K 400/f5.6 even though it is bigger and all

I have one, got it for NZ$200 at a second hand shop. I'm surprised the one
you saw was M42 mount though (mine is bayonet). Its actually not too bad a
lens if you can stop it down. I've found it quite soft wide-open but once
stopped down to f/8 it sharpens up quite well.

Can't say much about contrast because I don't do a lot of high-contrast
shooting with it. Its biggest drawback is that the closest focus distance is 4
metres. I usually add an extension tube when I'm shooting wildlife frame-fillers.

The tripod collar on mine is a real pain as well. The foot which screws onto
the tripod head can be removed by undoing two thumb-screws. Unfortunately
they have a habit of coming loose so you have to keep tightening them.

I would suggest avoiding an M42 adaptor for a long lens though, because you
lose open-aperture metering which means you either have to work slowly
(meter, stop down, shoot) or focus at your working aperture.

I am currently lusting after an FA*400/5.6...

Cheers,

Hi Peter:
I have the RMC 400/5.6, in bayonet mount, so probably a little later than the
one you are thinking of. It's big, heavy, built like a tank and has excellent
resolution, even wide open, in the centre. Unfortunately, mine does not have a
tripod collar, which can be a problem.
I would think that $210 is about what you might expect to pay from a shop (I
got mine second-hand and privately as part of a package for considerably less),
but they must have had it one hell of a long time, so you might be able to
bargain the price down even more!

Hi John

Thanks for the info. It looks good through the viewfinder, but the proof
will be in the photos. It is all metal, and as you say, built like a tank. I
figured that at the price it wasn't worth haggling. One of the US mail order
places still has it listed for $250 US.
