Re: What to charge to photograph a party?

On 28/5/10, Larry Colen, discombobulated, unleashed:

Actually, I clipped the relevant sentence. It wasn't my friends that
asked, it was someone who saw me showing my photos to my friends.

May I suggest what I do? Keep a business card handy with a link to a
website where rates may be obtained. I also have a couple of different
A4 sized info sheets detailing services offered. These live in a pocket
and readily erupt forth when the occasion arises.

Deciding what to charge is a conundrum that surpasses time. I have based
my rates on what is considered 'the going daily rate' and adjust
accordingly. This makes me as cheap or as expensive as anyone else doing
the same thing. But what I try to do is offer more than the competition
at the same price. These extras won't be cost-sensitive to me but might
appear as good bonuses to the client. For instance, when producing DVDs
I can make sure there are the correct files on the DVD for it to play in
a DVD player *and* a computer - not necessarily always possible for the
uninitiated.

For a stills photographer, this might mean not only making low-res
selection pics (digital contacts) online, but maybe sending through a
few sheets of printed contacts as well. People still like holding paper
even in the 21st century. Or maybe you show up to the shoot just wearing
a thong.

Second thought, scrub that last one.

That's a huge difference of course. My wedding minimum is $900. That's for

I turn over approximately 500 photo files to the couple to do with as they

I tend to agree with you on this, my caveat being don't charge friends
unless you are prepared for them to no longer be friends. For myself, I
just don't charge friends, or if I do, I let them buy me an expensive
bottle of Scotch or some such.

I don't equate what I do with what my lawyer or doctor does.

Yeah, well neither do I, but point I was trying to make needed some kind

Yes, they are. I use the Fong Lumisphere for weddings and events,
which I rarely shoot, and automobile interiors, which I frequently
shoot. It's excellent when working anywhere with a reasonably low,
light colored ceiling. It can also be flipped and used like a mini
softbox when the ceiling doesn't cooperate. Good tool.

Re: Re: What to charge to photograph a party?

I charge 400 Dkr/hour - eq. to 66 USD/hour, when working (semi)professionally.
For both photographing and editing. In fact I almost double my noramal hourly
salery, because I use my own equipmenet (camera eq., computer etc.) as well as
my private car. The photographers I know tell me it's not enough. To actually
run a business, I'd have to charge (under Danish conditions) at least 100
USD/hour. I guess it's also a question of guessing how much they want to spend,
and then work accordingly.

asked if I'd be interested in a job shooting an event, I
think it was his parents 50th anniversary. Assuming that the
scheduling worked, I don't even know what order of magnitude
to charge. If it's a 3 hour affair, that's easily 6 hours of
work, so I could see people charging anywhere from $150 to
$1200 for that.

I figure a $1000.00 DAY RATE; DAY = 8 hrs; $500.00 - HALF DAY = 4
hrs. Additional hours @ $125.00/hr beyond HALF DAY, until you get
beyond 8 hrs, then you should be charging time a half, but call
it $185.00/hr ... unless you really want to discourage going
overtime, then charge $200.00/hr.

Figure $150.00/hour for LESS than half a day. Three hours would
be $450.00 ... they might opt for HALF DAY.

Charge according to how many hours you're going to be on site,
actually in there shooting. The time you spend on post production
comes out of your over-head.

Consider that an incentive to get it right in camera so you don't
have to spend hours in post production.

If the clients are friends and you ask for that kind of money, they
will cease to be friends. If they're really good friends, I shoot
their party for grins. If they're somewhat distant friends, I charge
them a few hundred bucks. If I have to make money off my friends, I
figure I'm pretty hard up.

Larry's FRIEND asked him if he would be interested in doing a *JOB*.

Larry didn't ask if he SHOULD charge his friends when they ask him to
provide professional services, he asked HOW MUCH to charge them.

It's no different than friends asking a wedding photographer to shoot
their wedding. Should his friends get mad if he doesn't offer to do
the job for free?

Should anyone who is friends with a photographer expect that
photographer to shoot their weddings, bar mitzvahs, christenings,
Quinceañera, proms, seniors, family portraits, ... gratis?

Why limit it to photographers?

Shouldn't your friend who's a doctor provide you with free medical care?

And should your friend the doctor have the gall to bill you for his
professional services, shouldn't your friend who's a lawyer be willing
to represent you pro bono so you can sue your friend the doctor for
medical malpractice?

My opinion, anyone who would ask you to do a JOB for them should be
prepared to pay for your WORK. If they get mad because you quote them a
fair price, THEY are the ones who are pretty hard up.

Let them get mad. If they do, they're fair weather friends at best.

Re: What to charge to photograph a party?

2010-05-24 Thread Bob Sullivan
Larry,
That's hard to figure, depends on how good friends they are.
Based on seeing you work in Chicago, you'll surely shoot enough pictures.
And the quality will be good, but you'll have trouble editing it all down.
You could shoot 400-500 pictures and have to choose the best 50.
That's not easy. I think you have to charge them for the time 6+ hours
at some nominal rate, less than $100 and more than $25 per hour for friends.
For somebody who walked over to your table, saw your pictures, and just asked,
I'd think about it some more...probably double the above rates.
You really don't want to sell yourself at $25 per hour.
You're a better photographer than that!
Regards, Bob S.

It's about the same as a wedding, ask what you'd be comfortable charging
for that.
