Another option would be to pick up a 1 gig flash card. You can by one
at Samy's on Venice Blvd. and Arthur Kenney. Just a hop, skip and jump
from the airport and a few blocks east of Venice Beach.

With all those *istDs coming I would think there will be a camera-specific

Yep, Shel - the USB cable that is used on the *istD is camera specific - as
is the one that I use for my Muvo mp3 player. I have a universal one (such
as that you are referring to) with me, and also the one for my Muvo, but my
*istD cable is happily sitting at home in his little USB port attached to my
PC back in Australia!

And I don't care what any of you say - I AM a dickhead for doing that! lol.
btw, I think that as Aussies, we probably use the term in a much lighter
sense that you guys in the US do. When I said that, it was totally
tongue-in-cheek, as are most comments that Aussies make! lol.

So funny, on the flight from Japan today there was about 12 young US Navy
recruits and they kept saying "oh, you Arssees, you r accent is so cute!" I
just know that I am going to have to give you all a crash course on how to
say the word Aussie. Think Ozzy Osbourne, and you should be able to say it
correctly... Repeat after me... OZ-ZZIE... Just like mozzie (mosquito),

Ahh, thanks, interesting info, a web page with pic and interchangeability info
would be quite handy me thinks.

On my last trip I didn't envisage requiring the USB cable for my X-Drive as I
had no PC and I had 80GB free (so I thought). After driving some 1000km I
suddenly remembered that I had dumped my music library on it whilst doing some
system maintenance so I only had about 15GB free. Thankfully it was enough
space however if I knew what other cables connected to it I could have found a
computer shop some place and borrowed a suitable cable in order to free up my
drive space.

I felt like a bit of a dickhead :-)

Indeed. There are three standard USB connectors:
USB-A: this is what goes in to the 'host', ie computer
USB-B: goes in to the peripheral device.. most printers have this type
USB-mini B: A much smaller connector, for mobile devices.
My Canon S45 has a USB mini-B, nice and standard. Pentax in their wisdom
decided against going for something standard, and then stuck the video out
on the same connector as USB. Oh well.

There are two types of mini-USB connectors. One that about 90% of
devices use, and one that about 10% of devices use.

Guess which one Pentax went with?

The common one is small and flat. The uncommon one is small and round.

Tan, there'll be about a dozen of us with ist-D cameras at GFM and most
of us will have USB cables on hand. You can borrow mine if need be.

When I was racing motorcycles, I typically had to leave for a weekend of
racing right after work on Friday, with packing done late on Thursday
night in near panic. I learned to do "triage" packing: You divide
everything into three categories:
1 - Stuff that's absolutely irreplaceable. Motorcycle, for example ;-)
2 - Stuff that can be procured (purchased/borrowed) on site, but with
great expense and/or difficulty.
3 - Stuff that can be procured on site with relative ease or can be done
without if necessary.

The USB cable ranks somewhere between categories one and two. Relax and
enjoy the rest of your trip. :)

Maybe they aren't. According to a link that Anders provided
"http://www.deltaco.se/"; the connector on the *ist D is USB 1.1 and 2 capable
and also provides video connection. It appears to also be used on Canon EOS-1D,
EOS-1DS, a number of Nikon Coolpix, Panasonic and Toshiba cameras. So it's not
in such bad company.
