I would be happy to trade signatures at a NorCal PDML gathering.

I invite you all to the reception for my next exhibit showing:
"Foto Nova 19" at the Modernbook Gallery in Palo Alto, CA. The
reception is Friday, March 6, 7-10pm. It's walking distance from
CalTrain (on University Ave) which is itself accessible via BART
(transfer at Millbrae station coming from SF or East Bay areas)
for those who might prefer to avoid driving and parking. Full
information for this event is at the link below.

I hope I have my copy by then!

BTW, if the reception time doesn't work for PDMLers, I will be
happy to arrange another gathering at the Modernbook Gallery in
the month of March. The exhibit is on the walls from March 6 to
March 29.

I really don't know when or even why I first joined. I believe it was
after 2001 or 2002 when I was still actively shooting weddings. I used
Pentax 645 and ZX-5n cameras, so that must have been the reason.
I remember Roberto B. and we correcponded several times off list. I
recently found him on the other Pentax Forum and we traded greetings
again. He mentioned his cancer and divorce.
I left the group once for a few years and then came back after I
bought the istDL. I blame all of you for the K10, K20, and all the
other lenses I have now, including the famous t-shirt. Unfortunately,
it is true that you cannot have too many! :-)
The oft mentioned GFM event got me to attend in 2007 and I got to meet
several of you, as well as buy a hat from David Brooks.

AlunFoto wrote:

Jostein

That was Steve Graham, but it wasn't the first incarnation of the PUG.

The first was in April of 1997, wrangled and hosted by yours truly on my
home account. It appeared at random intervals for a while, whenever I
had time and could bother enough subscribers into sending me photos.

Steve contacted me about helping out, and we ran it together for a bit,
and it was his idea to take it the free hosting sites, which then became
quite unwieldy, and our good man Igor offered space at komkon. Steve
handled it by himself for a period of time, then disappeared, so I got
it back again about the time the serious whining about it not being
published often enough yada yada began.

I recall it was also when my wife was very sick/pregnant and oh, yeah, I
was burying my mother, so I really enjoyed the many messages about what
a slacker I was. But anyway, I browbeat Cassino into taking it over and
we're pretty much into current events, but I have to say that each
maintainer has raised the level of the PUG.

oh, and I've been on the list since early 1996.

I think I joined some time in 1997, when we were still hosted by Pentax USA.
The earliest message I can find is dated May 1998.
There were some interesting characters around then:
Bruce R. always claimed that Nikon was better than Pentax in every way, and
that Pentax could never make a DSLR
Suda Mafud went crazy
Brad Dobo was crazy
Kirkland R. ?? pontificated and then went crazy
The Who forgot to take his medication so often his emails were gibberish

And then there were the good guys, some of whom are still with us...

Yes, very few posts, indeed. I rather prefer learning reading pdml...

And, Dario, my first e-mail to you regarding the AOHC was in January,

I've had one in my possession for the past few months, and have
enjoyed excercising it on the water tank across the street. I want
to spend a few days downtown and at the Seattle Center with it.

It works.

It's sharp.

It rotates as well as shifts (pick your shift from a rose compass
of 12 directional settings) and shift far enough to get a 1.3
million 65' tall water tank corrected and in a vertical frame from
less than 60' away.

It can shift enough to vignette the opposite end of the frame, if
you let it.

I've been trying to remember when I came on the list - my best guess
is 1997 sometime - shortly after my son was born. My interest in
photography was peaked then and I got going with my Super Program and
then picked up a ZX-10 and went on from there.

Does anyone remember Mark Dalal? I remember he organized the first
Norcal PDML at Muir Woods - Met John Francis there, among several
others.

I know that was a belief shared by many of the members of the time. I
remain unconvinced that Mafud was smart enough to pull off such a trick.

In any case, the incident to which I am referring was definitely not a
case of Mafud arguing with himself - the posting in question was most
definitely injected by someone other than Mafud, even though (almost)
all the posting headers matched those on genuine Mafud posts.

Some recollections about PDML, PUG, etc.

I joined the list some time in 1997, when I purchased my
first Pentax - ZX-5n. (Actually, since even before I purchased it, -
as the list helped with some information on that camera and lenses.)
I found it through the links on Pentax website. PDML (which probably
was not called that way yet) was hosted by Pentax then.
When Pentax decided that it does not want to deal with all these
whiners, Doub Brewer picked up hosting of PDML.

Indeed, Steve Graham was the 2nd PUG maintainer, after Doug Brewer:
http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/1837/

Originally some galleries of PUG were hosted on Doug's personal web-space
(or does my memory decieve me about this?).
Unfortunately, I didn't think about creating a copy of those
galleries, - and they are not available anywhere for long time.
(BTW, - Doug, if you are reading this, - if you have a copy somewhere, -
let's post them to PUG.Komkon.org , under "previous galleries")

Due to the space limitation, a few galleries in late 1997 were posted on

http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Gallery/1318/

Having seen that, I contacted Doug and Steve, and offered hosting on
Komkon server. March 1998 gallery was the first one hosted on Komkon.

With the February of 1999 gallery, a bird [grin] named Mark Cassino
became the new PUG maintainer, followed by Bill Wrobb in July of 2000.

The longest PUG maintainer was Adelheid von Kirschten

Robert Batten, Alin Flaider, Tom Van Veen, Sid Barras,
Delano Mireles, Flavio Minelli, Gary L. Murphy, Michael Bromm,
Yves Caudano, Jan van Wijk.

Amongst them, one name is repeated over the longest period of time:
Jostein Oksne. (August 2000- June 2007).
He was the author and maintainer of the "AutoPUG" web-site based
submission form that he hosted on his website.

Over these years, I enjoyed my interaction with all PUG maintainers.

I remember when I first joined...sometime in 1999. I walked into the
Y2K debates. The only thing about Pentax I recall was the MLU...

I unsubscribed then relisted a couple of times but mostly lurking when
on board. The longest I was gone was just when the MZ-S came around
so I missed all the speculations about a Pentax DSLR, up until joining
up again late 2006 when I decided to grow old with you guys.

I had the 'pleasure' of joining when 'The Who' was posting incoherent,
psychotic emails. Valentin, Bill Robb, Malfud, and others were most
memorable at the time. It was about the time that the PUG was
restarted after a guy from the Phillipines embarassed the list by
starting a 2nd picture gallery. I sent him a picture of a squirrel in
snow at the bird feeder. That was ??? (The PUG restarted rather
immediately, under Bill Robb I think.)

Mark Cassino was running the PUG when I came onboard. I believe you were one

gallery.

A lot of people thought that Kirkland Ramsey, Mafud and the Who were
one and the same. I tend to think that KR and Mafud were the same
person but probably not the Who. Brad Dobo, on the other hand, was
definitely a one-off. He was legitimately crazy and seemed to be
dangerous. Oh yes, he was an elementary school teacher in London,
Ontario as well.

The Mafudian era was not among those.

Speaking of trolls, there was some guy who did technical writing for a
living who signed up and tried to teach all of us what Pentax was
_really_ like. Probably 2005 or 2006. Anyone remember him? IIRC, Cotty

IIRC, I joined in -96. That's when I got my first regular dialup
connection. Before that I had only been connected to internet through
the university in Bergen; it took them two years to close my account
after I graduated .

You may remember that John Mustarde briefly visited the List last year
to offload some equipment. He too, alas, is going to the Dark Side.
However he has trouble letting go, and encourage his wife to use the
Pentaxes. I bought the lens he had which his wife could not under any
circumstance be expected to handle anyway... :-)

Roland Mabo is still a pentaxian and active in other forums. Over at
DPreview he is considered something of a troll, I think. My memory of
him at PDML was a more humble kind of guy looking to improve his
photography.

And don't forget Boz Dimitrov! He was quite active on the List back
then. I remember he agonised a lot over detaching himself from PDML
and vowed to keep the K-mount page going. Truly a man of his words!

Does anyone remember the name of the Scotsman who ran the first
incarnation of the PUG, before Igor struck the deal with Komkon?

Ah, yes. I remember those days well.

I remember that incident, in particular, because Mafud stated categorically
that it was impossible to spoof emails well enough to avoid detection, and
taking this as proof positive of whatever conspiracy theory he was peddling
that day. (I don't know how come I saw that post, as he was in my permanent
killfile; maybe he'd changed his email address, or maybe somebody quoted his
message). Anyway, he shortly made a followup post recanting that particular
position. Or, at least, it appeared that he did. But very soon thereafter
he was ranting and raving even more than usual, accusing person or persons
unknown of identity theft, fraud, libel, and the like, and denying any and
all connection to the followup post. But, apparently, the mail was spoofed
well enough to make it pretty hard to point the finger at anyone involved.
And, in any case, just the injection of that message pretty much deflated
Mafud's argument - a fairly convincing proof-by-example.
