True, Cotty, I have seen many of them with this double-setup too. But
the few I know personally want to be more creative (one works for a

One war reporter and when not in war a normal PJ uses a lot his
1.4/35mm for creative DOF, even in plain daylight (I guess the 1/8000
speed of these bodies helps thereg). Even for normal, fast,
reportage. I must admit, his photographs are really good, they stand
out of the usual PJ snappers crowd.

That's an interesting point. One wonders whether or not most press
snappers are simply using the '2 body 2 zoom' setup almost because it's
de riguer. By that I mean that - heaven forbid - it's the fashion! Not so
long ago, I'd see all snappers with a gadget bag, namely a Billingham.
Then I started to see them disappearing in favour of rucksacks - more
mobility. Once you've got your bodies and lenses that you want, the rest
can go on your back, freeing up arms and legs. This is ideal for papping
celebs, or outside court. But now, the bags seem to have gone altogether!
Two bodies with 2 zooms, one or both with flash and NiCad(s) in jacket
pocket(s). So if I saw someone with a 35 1.4, I'd take a closer look -
this guy isn't following the fashion! He's probably *setting* the trends,
not following them.

I wonder how many of the trend-followers could shoot something decent
with just one body and one prime? I'll bet your friend could. That's the
acid test, eh!

Good light to you too,

Cotty

I would like to have backups too, best something slower but more

A sensible strategy, Paul. I was distraught when I concluded that one of my
20mm lenses was probably 21 or 22mm. Then I realized that I could keep it

from, fewer to carry--who could ask for anything less?

I've just ordered three of Pentax's four A-series teleconverters. If you
have fast primes, don't overlook TCs as a way to reduce your total carrying

RE: How many lenses do you WANT to own?

2002-01-16 Thread Peifer, William [OCDUS]

Mike Johnston wrote:
And here's another question for you--how many lenses do you WANT to own?

Hi Mike,

OK, I'll take the bait. In answer to the earlier question about how many I
own? Well, I've got more than you seem to have, but ~much~ less than some
of the PDMLers. If I ever end up with as many as some of the PDMLers, I'm
sure my wife will have me committed to the lunatic asylum. ;-) Currently,
the inventory is as follows -- six SMC Pentax primes from 28 to 135,
including four 50's (one of which I haven't used and almost sold to Albano
one time), two zooms in the closet (SMC-F 35-80/4-5.6, SMC-A 70-210/4), and
one zoom on the way (SMC-A 35-105/3.5).

With my one autofocus and two manual-focus bodies, I can justify two fast
50's -- one autofocus and one manual focus, of course. (A third fast 50 in
manual focus is OK for the backup manual body, but I don't really need a
fourth 50mm lens.) I think I can get by with just the one 28 and the one
135 that I own. And that autofocus 35-80 zoom, although it doesn't get much
use, is handy enough for snapshots that I don't think I'd want to get rid of
it. I guess I don't ~need~ the two manual-focus zooms, but I ~want~ them
too much to part with them, and they do seem to come in handy in certain
situations. Would be nice to have something around 85 (like the well-worn
SMC-M 85/2 I saw as an extra lens included in the kit that sold on eBay a
while back). A fast 300 or 400 would be fun, but I don't know if I'd use it
very often, and my 400mm f/5 refracting telescope with T-adapter seems to
suffice for that sort of thing when I do need that much reach.

I guess I ~really want~ to swap one of the 50's for an 85. So the final
answer would be six primes and three zooms -- same number as what I have
now. I guess that means I'm at equilibrium? But you and I both know I'm
not going to stop there. ;-)

two. What I want is to own nothing more than I use, and to carry
everything
I own. I'm very aware of the ideal kit for me: a 40mm f/2 and an 85mm f/2.
I
got used to the 40mm focal length using the CLE and the old Olympus

enough

More generically, any moderate-speed, moderate-wide-angle normal lens
paired

When I'm feeling ascetic--as if two lenses is decadent g--I substitute
one
50mm for both of them. That's what I've been mostly doing in recent years.

Well ... how many high quality lenses are out there? When I ordered my
ZX-5n and FA 35/2 about a year and a half ago, I couldn't imagine I would

And, as long as it's all still fun and affordable (i.e., it isn't robbing
resources or attention from more important things), I don't see any
compelling reason to not find out what's over that next hill.

At one time my base kit was an MX w the 35/2 and the 85/2. If I was to
replace it I think would get the 100/2.8 instead of the 85. At the moment I
have a 24/2, a 50/1.4 and an 80-200/2.8 as a base kit, more versatile but
somewhat more of a hassle to carry about.

Re: How many lenses do you WANT to own?

2002-01-16 Thread Shel Belinkoff

Having more lenses doesn't mean you have to carry them with you,
although, when Erwitt traveled on assignment he usually carried his full
kit - two bodies, misc. items, and all his lenses from 17mm to 300mm. I
guess it depends on what you're photographing and what the circumstances
are.

I agree that many times carrying too much equipment gets in the way of
the photographic process - it certainly does for me. Usually I carry no
more than two bodies and three or four lenses.

National Geographic?

Re: How many lenses do you WANT to own? what i'm taking on my holiday.

2002-01-16 Thread Paul Jones

I have been thinking (to uch) about what lenses to take on my trip next
week.

I finally descided on:
24/2
35/2.8
50/1.4
100/2.8

And thinking about it now, if i got a 43/1.9 then i could probaly suplement
it for both the 35 and the 50.

The original plan was to take MZ-S and LX, now i'm think i might be able to
get away with the just MZ-S and just mid role change film, as i doubt i'll
carry to bodies from the car at the same time.

My girlfriend pointed out that i spent more time packing camera gear than
clothes :)

 Makes eminent good sense.

Re: How many lenses do you WANT to own?

2002-01-16 Thread Bmacrae

I want a 20mm or a 24mm or both in addition to my 19mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm,
135mm, 200mm, and 400mm. The new 31mm Limited might be nice. Also, I think
the Vivitar Series 1 28-105 f2.8-3.8 zoom is one of the best zooms ever made
by any company and I sold mine! I replaced it with a mint 28-135 f4 pentax-A
but I don't think it's a better lens (unless you consider being better
flare-proff than the Vivitar). The Pentax is sharp enough for a zoom, but the
close focusing on the Vivitar is shorter and the macro is much, much
better. The vivitar is also faster (both in use since it's a one-touch and
aperture-wise)

There were a couple being sold on ebay by Henry's recently that I was
watching. Just a fantastic lens (for a zoom).

The 28mm shift might be fun since I shoot a lot of buildings. The bellows
with 100mm f4 is something i will pick up eventually.

But Mike, you didn't ask how many lenses we carried?

I shot 95% of my last O/S trip on a 35 f/1.4

The other FLs just filled in the gaps that the 35 f/1.4 couldn't.

I don't use my 15 f/3.5 that often but it sure has it's place in my lens line-
up, I don't just shoot head and shoulders :-)

Paul,

I fear that you will regret the decision to take only one camera body, I am
sure that you will find MRC to be more trouble than it's worth. I am sure that
you will have fun with the lens line-up though, I don't think that you'll have
too much trouble with fire on your way up the coast either, it p*ssed down last
night and now we have some local flooding :-(

I'd be disturbed if it took me longer than a few minutes to pack my clothing
and sundries, got to keep your perspective :-)
