I don't think the woman astronaut is an example of the same kind of
thing. She did go into outer space. Since she then had an opportunity
that no accomplished Canadian photographer had, her photography and
book were legitimate.

What a pile of bat droppings!

The same sort of thing happened here when Canada's first female
astronaut, Roberta Bonday got a great huge government grant to
photograph Canada from the air, and publish it in a book. She'd never
done a professional photo job in her life, and admitted that she'd
only recently become interested in photography, yet she gets a coupla
hundred thousand to do this book (from which she got the profits,
never having to pay the gov't back a cent).

Things like this pretty much leave a real bad taste in my mouth.

cheers,

It's getting a job based on your fame, not your talent.
Ms. Bondar is, IIRC, a medical doctor who had the good fortune to have her
name picked out of a hat.

This is not good credentials for a photographer.

Well, that's what I was thinking.

BTW, Paul, her book isn't shots she took from outer space. They're
landscapes. Good landscapes, but no better than many other
photographers who didn't get government grants to finance their travel
across Canada to get the photos, and to finance the publication of the
book.

I think you need to have a serious word with your councillors...

When my local council did a similar exercise a few years ago they at least
had the good sense to get their photographers from Magnum.

At least it looks like she's using a Pentax - one of the Espio series, I
think, but yes, what a phenomenal waste of money.

Glad I'm in Brizzie, not Sidders.

and I took lots of photos of Norton St. Its a street full of cafe's and smells
like coffee. If you can get a table without gangs bashing you or having your
car stolen (dont drive anything but a BMW) it is not worth the effort.

1. Well, she must be good to charge that much GRIN.
2. She obviously must be a pro, look at that black digital camera GRIN.
3. Who is paying the other $30,000 + expenses GRIN.
4. Does her day rate include sex with the city council GRIN.
5. You should have quoted $100K per day, Rob, instead of $1K. But item 4 might
have been a sticking point.

That's just stupid.

And will probably work as well as the WA state government's hair
brained scheme several years ago. They spent AU$1 million on a 3 day
TV commercial shoot with Elle McPherson. For a tourism campaign to
sell West Australia to the world. That was a good investment. She's
from Queensland for crying out loud!!!

Misuse of tax money makes my blood boil.
