I think "11 Years" and "Cora's Cafe" are my favorites this time, though
it's not hard at all to enjoy the lot of them. FWIW, 8 of the 18 photos
submitted were shot on film, probably due to the nature of the theme. I
believe that's the highest percentage we've had in quite some time. Not
that it matters, it's just something I take note of every month.

Thanks Scott, for all your hard work getting the Pug up each month. I
really enjoy it :)

This month's PUG was great, what a lovely bunch of submissions! My
personal favorite is 'Shadows Along the Fence".

I agree with Ann's comments. It is a super gallery, but we have to
find some way to get more of the phine photographers on the list to
participate and to submit entries to the gallery.

My personal favorites are "Ice Flower" by Kenneth Waller and "Cape
Conran in '97" by Brian Walters. Excellent work all around.

I'm amazed by Bill Robb's picture. First of all because people lived settled
(as opposed to nomadic) lives in such a place. I'm pretty sure that in most
parts of the world steppes and grasslands are mainly inhabited by nomads.
They must have looked out first thing every morning and thought 'Right,
where shall we go today?', and never come up with an answer. Second, that
his family were obviously extremely successful dry land farmers - they seem
to have produced an awful lot of it!

Seconded. Must have been a scary place in the winter, especially with no

I'm amazed by Bill Robb's picture. First of all because people

They must have looked out first thing every morning and thought

Seconded. Must have been a scary place in the winter, especially

Wow!

Once again it is a small gallery, only 12 entries, but there are some
powerful images there, and some very good interpretations of the
"Roots" theme, both literal and figurative.

I hope to comment on the photos when I have time.

Once again, Scott, you did a great job organizing the gallery. Thank
for for all your efforts in keeping this long-standing tradition
alive.

My understanding is that Grampa's brother came over some years earlier,
prior to WWI and homesteaded in the area, and then our family came over as
soon after WWI as they could manage and lived with the brother's family
until the house was built.
It would have been built by my grandfather, his brother, and other local
farmers.
This was an era of westward expansion by both the Canadian and the American
governments, so land was practically being given away. all a person had to
do was homestead it and be Canadian in order to give Canada leverage if the
Americans decided to move the border north.
Consequently, a lot of imigrants were sold somewhat of a bill of goods
regarding what they were getting, my grandfather being one of them.
About all the Robb's sucessfully farmed was rocks. There is a salt lake
within a few miles of the farmsite that has enough dissolved mineral that a
sodium sulphite extraction mill was built at the town of Bishopric, perhaps
5 miles distant. On a hot breezy day, one can see the salt rising off the
lake and drifting over the nearby farms.
The 1930s in that area was also one of the dryest times on record, with a
drought that lasted pretty much the entire decade.
It was, apparently, a pretty brutal existence, you were either a tough SOB
or you moved to Moose Jaw and sold your daughters into whoring to survive.
I suspect that if they had the money, they would have called the entire
adventure a waste of time and moved back to Auchtermuchty.
My family farmed that area until well after WWII, although two sons were
lost in the war, and two (my father and an uncle) came back from the
European conflict, went to university and took up teaching.
The son that got the war exemption (they wouldn't take every male so as to
ensure that families weren't wiped out completely) went on to become an
engineer and ended up building a few power plants and hydro electric
facilities for the fledgling Crown Corporation called SaskPower and my
grandparents retired off the farm in the early 1950s and moved to a town
nearby, where they resided until the early 1960s when they had to be moved
into care facilities in Regina.

Thanks for showing interest, though I don't know if you were showing this
much.

Paul, I intend to get back out there and do some more work there before the
place collapses completely. The hous is sitting on a rock foundation that is
becoming very unstable, and the spine of the roof, while not broken yet, is
definitely on it's way out.
Southern Saskatchewan is dotted with these little abandoned farms and ghost
towns from the steam rail era where a town sprung up every 10 miles or so to
supply the trains.
A friend of mine has started documenting these abandoned or nearly abandoned
town sites, and I am trying to go on a few expeditions with him this year.

Thanks again

The closest town is Mossbank, the closest town of any size is Avonlea.
It's something like 60km south of Moose Jaw on Highway 2, perhaps as much as
2 km off the highway.

There's a good chance it was Mossbank.
After the war effort wound down, the DOD turned the traning area over to the
town, which immediately turned it into a golf course.
Apparently the Scots do this just about everywhere more than one of them
settles.
Local lore had it that there was so much unexploded munitions left outside
of the course proper that the occasional errant drive would sometimes hit
something that went bang, and you don't really want to step very far off the
fairway to search for lost balls.

Sort of the original version of Extreme Golfing, I guess.

I know from experience that a bad drive off the first tee would generally
hit the old runway tarmac and from there would end up pretty much anywhere.

That's a fascinating story, Bill. I had a great aunt, whom I never met, who

Halifax, Novia Scotia, so they were practically neighbours.

Great to see so many participants. Must be the largest gallery for some
time.

Favourites - restricting myself to five (a difficult task!) - in no
particular order:

* At the bottom of forrest by Carl Gjersem; wonderful colour and
composition
* Wet Daffy by David J Brooks; a beautiful flower enhab-=nced by the
water drops
* Fashionista by Igor Roshchin - even though it is a bit creepy!
* Unlike any other by John Coyle - yes it is!
* Morning Glory by PatrickTemmerman - unusual angle that works well

http://pug.komkon.org/10jun/slides/IGP2743.html have a natural yellow cap
but reflect the canopy of leaves, giving the distinct green tone?

I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject, but the one captured was pretty
much as posted - it was a heavy forest canopy.

Thanks, Brian. There is a minor problem with this PUG. I really like
your "Fog Lifting" but to say so might be interpreted as soliciting
protectionism :-). Sorry, Bob, I had to put a smiley in here.

I also really like Ann's "Window". On more than just immediate level,
both pictures are really alive in my eye.

I notice that I noted the wrong lens on my shot it was the last shot I
took with the 18-55 before switching to the 100 mm macro

Naomi's shot charms me because I see her not my wrinkled eye.

George V's Garden cat can watch work for hours...

the leading lines in Filip's shot really work well for me this morning

and finally Brian W's Fog Lifting is wonderful. I want to have taken
it and have it on a wall and be able to say my house is in the fog just
over there...

I really liked Naomi's shot with the reflection in the eye!
My wife also enjoyed it.

I was puzzled at first by the "new neighbor"
(Henk Terhell), and it took a few moments to figure out what is what...
Great catch! (auto-sic!)

I also liked Brian's fog and Ken Waller's sunset.
That sunset reminded me of my own (actually a series) with a similar
idea:

Thanks Steven :)

I liked most of the submissions. A few, however, seem to stand out:

"Photo from the balcony of my house" by George.
The natural, everyday feel of this diagonal composition is lovely.

"Lone Tree" by Bran.
A low-contrast, square, tranquil image.

"Going to the City" by Dan,
The "subject" is soo charming!

"Red Sky at Night" by Ken.
Has just made me feel better...

I've been to Knysna! It's near George. At the end of my last African trip I
hooked up with some friends in South Africa for a wedding and we spent a very
enjoyable week or so in Plettenberg Bay. I flew back from Knysna, or George,

A great PUG. Unfortunately no lakes in my part of SA. Knysna is a very
popular holiday destination; in fact the whole Garden Route. Very hot
property along there!

Another enjoyable gallery with nice images. Matthew Hunt's "Sulphur

really liked Rick Womer's "Moonlight". It is one of those images that
(because it is low key) doesn't grab your attention at thumbnail size

HI Brian! Yep, it’s another great PUG. Thanks for all your work, and I agree
with you about Rick’s shot—very pretty, but all the scenics are lovely. I
think a shout out goes to Jan’s Vissar! The shape of the casted net evokes the
butterfly—really great!

Thanks to all for your kind comments about Lake Michigan—I have to say, if
you’re looking for something really fun to do, grab your bathing suit, head to
the beach when the water is lively, and splash around with a waterproof camera.
If it ever warms up here in Chicago, I hope to do a lot more of that this
summer.

Cheers, Christine

I had to go back and look at the June PUG again after all the comments
about Ken's "The Lake - Lake Superior". It is indeed an image worthy
of the kudos. When converting it to digital I believe I would have
done a slight image rotation to correct the vertical lines. Similarly,
I thought Jack Davis' "Tahoe Silhouette" is a fetching image with my
only niggle being that the distant shoreline seems a bit off level.

Re: June PUG is up!!

2015-06-07 Thread Dario Bonazza

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for liking that pic & all that photo stuff with Giulia.

Holding out... true. Well, in fact lately I use to post my pics either on
Facebook or on Flickr, but Facebook is Facebook and Flickr is Flickr, so
there will be more than someone disliking that. Also, my new (cheap) website
structure only allows low-res pics like these:

http://www.dariobonazza.com/musica_16.html
http://www.dariobonazza.com/danza_14.html
In brief, I'm afraid I'm not set to show you my pics in a way there won't be
someone asking for another better way to do that.

On the other hand, in the past I had the feeling my pics didn't raise so
much interest here, hence I didn' care so much and I was content enough to
keep posting to the PUG.

However, now I'm going to start a new thread explaining my project with
Giulia.

Cheers,

Dario

While I may not always have had the time -- or the expertise -- to
comment on what you posted here, Dario, I have always very much
enjoyed viewing your images. You have a very unique style and

Prints not yet done, but they will be printed directly on forex support, so
that they can stay outdoor too. Just in case the Italian importers will be
interested and want to do something weird I am suggesting them. I don't

Lots to like about this month's gallery, but who doesn't love mountains?

Ken's 'Mountain Waves' with its line of receding ridges, Subash's
'Trisul (the human figure emphasizes the immense scale of the
mountains), Mark's 'Snowdonia' (would like to see that pano larger),
Ann's 'Along the Devils Highway' and Matt's 'Evening Fog' are my
standouts this month.

Thanks to all!

2017-06-05 Thread P. J. Alling
The only decent mountain shot I think I have is an image of The Old Man
of the Mountain. I took a year or so before he fell off. It's on film,
and I have no idea where those negatives are, the scans were lost in a
hard drive crash a few years ago. So I had nothing for the pug. These
are all very nice and I just wanted to know how much I hated all of you.

Re: June PUG is up

2017-06-05 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I took an image of the old man of the mountain at about the same time, from
the little area at the pond. I also am having trouble finding the original
image.

First the ancient face slides right off the mountain, then we both misplace
our images; Seems like a bit of witchcraft up there in New England.

G'day all,

Lots to like about this month's gallery, but who doesn't love mountains?

Ken's 'Mountain Waves' with its line of receding ridges, Subash's
'Trisul (the human figure emphasizes the immense scale of the
mountains), Mark's 'Snowdonia' (would like to see that pano larger),
Ann's 'Along the Devils Highway' and Matt's 'Evening Fog' are my
standouts this month.

Thanks to all!

Brian - thanks for putting me in such good company for your faves...
I already "liked" Mark's watery guitar on facebook so he knows I liked
that :-) .. Ken's and Matt's tied for my very favorites, especially
since I have been both
places and photo'ed them myself so they have strong memory appeal --
and I have to mention David Mann's because I so love the geology , as
well as the geometry :-)

Fascinating formation.

Thanks for the mention, Ann. The landscape is even better when you go down the
southern side of the pass but it's not really possible to pull over and take a
photo.

Great PUG! Love mountains. They are all good, but two jumped out at me:

Jack's Cathedral Ridge, because of the contrasting colors. And Ken's
Mountain Waves because it's so abstracted it doesn't even have to be a
photo.

But great PUG all around.

Amazing Gallery! Lots of wonderful and interesting shots.
I am partial to abstracts, but even given that, this was to my eye one of
the most pleasing galleries we have had. I am still trying to decide which

Re: June PUG is up

2019-06-13 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Sorry, I seldom comment PUG photos; I just enjoy viewing them...

Henk's photo
http://pug.komkon.org/19jun/slides/Terhell-hiding-IMGP2534-3.html
brought up in my mind a poem by Joseph Brodsky "1867" from his poetic
set "Mexican Divertimento".
Talking about turbulent Mexico in 1867, he wrote (my non-poetic
translation from Russian):
"... and every skull in bushes has three eyes...(and a luxuriant tuft of
grass growing from each of them)" (referring to a bullet hole as the "3rd
eye")

Unfortunately, I don't have the English version of it on hand, so, I
don't remember how Brodsky translated this himself.

Igor

PS.
I've just found some translation by Lev Loseff and Barry Scherr:

... Especially here, in the tropics, where death, alas,
Is being spread like infection by flies
or like a well-turned phrase in a cafe,
and where skulls in the bushes always have three eyes,
with a rank tuft of grass in each."
