Not WMP, but possibly MS's JPEG replacement format that looks pretty good (better IQ than JPEG under moderate to high compressions, 16 bit support) -Adam On Wed, May 14, 2008 at 9:51 AM, P. J. PEF should be displayed as soon as you install the PEF codec which is linked from Microsoft's own website. As of DNG, MS won't support an Adobe format and Adobe seems they don't wanna support Microsoft (nor their customers in this case). I'm sure that there's a third party Codec for DNG available, possibly for free. However that might violate your EULA with Microsoft. There's one, but not free :( It is up to you to judge is 30 US$ (AFAIR) is good money for that or not. Note that it supports metadate editing etc. so it is fairly complete although not free. I can't believe JPGs would no longer be shown in Vista in near future. But I don't care much about thumbnails as long as files can be viewed/organized with the right software such as PS Elements, LR or Picasa. Vista Photo Gallery disqualifies itself as a tool for this if not able to thumbnail/ open RAW files. Otherwise for my use Vista 64-bit is very fast and very good. Re: Microsoft and Hoya Pentax join forces.
MS relies on the camera maker to support its RAW formats. Most camera makers are not supporting 64 bit software. Vista Photo Gallery is actually a rather nice bit of software, much better than many 3rd party equivalents (Its support for IPTC tagging and Bridge/Lightroom compatible star-tagging elevates it). -Adam On Fri, May 16, 2008 at 4:14 AM, Henk Terhell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I can't believe JPGs would no longer be shown in Vista in near future. > But I don't care much about thumbnails as long as files can be > viewed/organized with the right software such as PS Elements, LR or > Picasa. RE: Microsoft and Hoya Pentax join forces.
It's very impressive technically, despite terms like 'visual photos' and 'visual cameras', but I don't think you need to be disturbed. I don't expect you'll be forced to contribute your pictures to it against your will (they are still copyright after all), and your pictures' intended use and context remains as long as you preserve it. The presenter didn't mention anything about time, which is an important part of how we see a photo. A picture represents its subject matter in a small fraction of a second, but the composite of Notre Dame is not built from pictures taken in the same fraction of a second, so it represents something that never existed. At best it's an approximation of Notre Dame (as any picture is, of course). I wonder how it deals with times when there's scaffolding on the building, or rainy days versus sunny days, or pictures taken in 1943 versus pictures taken this morning. If Google takes a photo from space of Cotty lying naked in his garden, and this software merges it with a picture taken a couple of years ago of the previous owners lying naked in the next spot, what will people think they're seeing? It should raise some interesting questions. Bob > > I'm finding this somewhat disturbing. Your hard won > photographs are now > nothing more than data. Re: Microsoft and Hoya Pentax join forces.
Worst case here would be WMP specs are never released under Microsoft's "Open Specification Promise", Pentax adopts it as the sole image format and Microsoft prosecutes free software writers. I'm glad I switched to RAW. Bob, their photos were skimmed off Flicker, who says you'll be asked? > If Google takes a photo from space of Cotty lying naked in his garden, > and this software merges it with a picture taken a couple of years ago > of the previous owners lying naked in the next spot, what will people > think they're seeing? Now that's a very disturbing image... Bob W wrote: > It's very impressive technically, despite terms like 'visual photos' > and 'visual cameras', but I don't think you need to be disturbed. Vista Photo Gallery uses the same codec plugins to drives its RAW support that Windows Explorer uses to show thumbnails, so you get both when you get the codec from the camera manufacturer. MS does not handle RAW support themselves. PS Elements relies on an Adobe-sourced RAW plugin (Adobe Camera RAW) while Picasa is a monolithic app that must be updated for new RAW formats, and RAW format decoding is built directly into the app. Should Pentax release a codec for PEF to show thumbnails on Explorer, Photo Gallery will start supporting PEF's. Photo Gallery has no native file type support (Even JPEG is supported via a MS-supplied codec that's included in the base OS install). -- M. Well, MS needs to do some homework (a.o. joining forces with Hoya Pentax) to make Vista Photo Gallery a useful tool for DSLR owners. VMware allows you to pretty-much treat your Mac as a native Windows host, and run Windows apps along side your native Mac ones on the same screens. It now fully supports dual-screens too. Adam Maas wrote: > > As does Parallels for less money and smoother integration than VMWare. > > With respect, I would _not_ take that as a given. :-) Since they both offer a 30-day eval period, the wise shopper should evaluate them both in actual use and see how they behave. In my own testing on both a 13" Macbook and 20" iMac, I found that VMware Fusion uses a lot less CPU and RAM than all 3 of the other virtual machine products I tested. I have run Windows, various Linux releases and FreeBSD under these VMs, and VMware "Just Worked", where the others all gave me grief on one point or another. Anway, just as with photo equipment, there's no magic one-size-fits-all solution.
