And I am not going to take my FAJ 18-35 lens with me which is my ultimately widest lens for the moment. The only lens currently available wider than the 21mm that isn't a zoom is the DA14. A wonderful lens, a bit less bulky and less expensive than either the DA12-24 or DA*16-50, which are almost on par in quality. But on my trip to the UK last year, I found the DA21 was an almost perfect wide for the vast majority of the time. There were only three or four occasions when I missed taking the DA14 along with me ... I missed having my own tripod with me a lot more than having the DA14! I should know tomorrow whether they ship it or send me an inaccurate message why they haven't shipped it. Joe -- Nope. Today, Adorama's web site says they don't have it yet. Last week their web site showed it as available. Once again Adorama jumped the gun. So I should get an email from them saying it is backordered. The last time Adorama did this to me was with the DA 40. I cancelled the order with them and ordered from BH instead. Once again, the U.S. is near the bottom of the list for receiving new Pentax products. But I think Australia rates even lower than us. Joe
Re: My new toy
No, I'm proposing that those who use the EXIF data and find the information that way, keep it to themselves so others may enjoy having a little fun guessing and trying to figure out the information. It's similar to some jamoke sitting beside you on a bus, having read the answer to the crossword puzzle you're working on, tells you what the word you're stumped on is. Some people just like to figure it out for themselves, even if they can turn to the puzzle answer in the back of the newspaper. If all you want is the info, by all means, use it, but keep it to yourself. But some want more than the information and enjoy the fun of the game. The whole point of Wendy's post was to have a little fun - even she was disappointed that she'd forgotten to hid the information. Robinson's comment probably (although I'm sure Wendy can speak for herself) took a little of the fun out of it for Wendy as well by watching people guess and then making the proud announcement of her new lens ~herself~ Sure, it's a little, unimportant thing in the overall scheme of things, but so what. It's the little things that sometimes make one's day a little more interesting. RE: My new toy
Hey Boris! Congratulations, I like my ME-II winders very much. One thing to check: Look in the winder socket on the bottom of the camera and be sure the little lever that slides back and forth to trip the sutter is free and easy to move. On cameras that have never seen a winder before this lever gets sticky and hard to move. This will cause noise, strain on the winder and possible mis-fires. A simple clean and lubrication will fix it right up. Don -Original Message- From: Boris Liberman [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, September 12, 2004 11:42 AM To: PDML Subject: My new toy Hi! But the frame count advances and shutter seems to trip so I suppose it is working. I wonder are there any gotchas that I may have to be aware of? Anyone can help me here? Thanks. P.S. Even with winding off I can use the camera as usual but with this massive grip. It adds certain pleasure in holding it as it became bigger and handier so to say. -- Boris mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

And you do want to use a hood on this lens - it's wide-open front is vulnerable to flare, probably its worst feature. (But it's got a lot of ~good~ features, too...) Very nice work! I didn't notice your images as being contrasty so the film/developer combo worked OK. I must admit when reading your post explaining the band the first thing that popped into my head was an old Bud light beer commercial featuring a fictitious band called Burnt Toast. The commercial was done in typical rockumentary style but the punch line was that they were a classical band playing classical instruments. You know TV *Hoovers* when what you remember is the beer commercials. :) BUTCH Each man had only one genuine vocation - to find the way to himself. Hermann Hess (Demian)

I thought that I won't make a I have a new toy statement but to make this story full it would be necessary. I have a new toy. Or even two. Four days ago I finally got mine MZ-S with FA24-90. It took me almost two months to buy it in Poland. I needed Polish invoice so I had to go through a path of pain caused by current Polish Pentax distributor. But enough about that - I finally have it and I'm really happy. At thursday we had a holiday in Poland and I went to my parents for dinner taking my new camera with me (it's strange that I didn't took to bed with me g). After that a friend invited me to a Apocalyptica concert. Apocalyptica are couple of cello players from Finland, along with a drummer right now, that play heavy metal (they started with cello Metallica covers). I'm not their big fan but I got a free ticket so decided to go. Took the camera with me as I didn't want to leave it in car and figured out that I can find some semi-peacefull place that it would be safe in my bag. At the entrance however there was an unpleasant surprice - I coudn't take the camera inside and had to leave it at the desk. Fortunatelly my friend was sitting there so I had someone I could trust the MZ-S. But soon after the concert started my friend called me and handed me a PHOTO pass. And there I was from a guy that couldn't bring the camera inside to someone that had official permission to shot. Having that decided to give a camera a try. I only had HP5+ 400 with me but on the package there was the development time for 1600ASA in ID-11 so that's what I had to use. Universal Music Poland insisted that no photos were taken during the show except for authorised people and only during the last three songs. I could enter the space between audience and scene and exposed whole roll from there which almoust used all my time. How it all turned out can be checked here: http://www.kajko.wdb.pl/apocalyptica/ All shots taken with MZ-S + FA24-90, mostly spot metered from face. The film was developed in ID-11(1+0), 9:30min, 25C. I had to use the high temperature as it was hot here for almoust the month and that what the room (or rather bathroom) temperature was and didn't had the idea how to cool the dev down since it wasn't to be mixed with water. Unfortunatelly it further boosted the contrast. I scanned everything at work at a bit crappy Agfa Duoscan but I quite like the result. After all it was a really nice experience. I'm convinced that the build quality if the K-lenses is superior to any lenses pentax made afterwards. Optically, some may be the best lenses Pentax has ever made, certainly amongst the best. One may argue that they do not offer as much saturation or contrast than some newer lenses, and I can't argue that point not being much of a color shooter. But I'll put them up against any other lenses on the planet WRT BW work. There is something very nice and solid about the way they feel, too. Juan, I meant to ask you about the 30/2.8. Seems to be a popular lens. I paid consideralbly more than $100 for mine and still feel I got a deal. --Tom Treena Harp wrote: Is it the MF version? RE: My new toy
I hate you ;-) This lens is really not for you. You should be tired of it by early next week. At that time, I will send you my mailing address and do you the favor of taking that big problem off your hands. You'll thank me later. Seriously, it's a great (ie. very sharp) lens, and you got a very good deal. Enjoy! -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of David A. After a quick inspection of the optics mechanics I bought it. The price I paid was NZ$795 which works out to about US$330 at the current exchange rate. Re: My new toy
Jon Hope writes: I picked up a new to me Manfrotto 055CD tripod today, complete with 029 head. All for the measly sum of $150 AUD (erm approx $3.24 USD). Well done. That's not a bad price, either. I have the same combination and it's rock solid even for medium format (except at full extension). It has a problem with the bottom clamps. They need adjusting, as the bottom leg thingies will slip upwards when weight is applied. Can anyone tell me how to go about adjusting them? It's dead easy. Opposite the clamp lever there should be a little nut with a plastic cover-thing on it. Remove the plastic thing and don't lose it. Tighten the nut with the appropriate size socket wrench (I forget what size you need). The nut must be aligned correctly for the little plastic thing to go back on properly. Its primary function is to stop the nut coming loose again. If it doesn't go all the way on, just turn the nut a little tighter/looser (we're talking less than 1/6th of a turn) so it lines up with the moulded hexagonal cavity in the plastic thing. You can probably do this by turning the clamp lever back forth while pressing the plastic thing on. The plastic thing's tab needs to sit properly in its slot or it will fall off and the nut will come loose again. I found this out the hard way, I was lucky enough to get my hands on a replacement pretty easily. I hope I haven't confused you too much ;) It's a lot easier than I make it sound. On my 455, the process is: loosen the clamp lever, then carefully pry off the plastic locking tab from the threaded end of the bolt to allow access to the nut on the end of said bolt. Tighten as needed. You might want to look and see if there is a plastic hex socket clamped around one of your tripod legs, this is Manfrotto's tool for tightening those nuts. Thanks for that, Dan. I don't have the hex socket, but that isn't a worry, I have a million (or thereabouts) tools that will do the job. Cheers Jon Relax! On my monopod, there's a little clip thingy that clips to the monopod leg. One one end it has a tool to remove the plastic plug and the opposite end is a hex socket for tightening the leg clamps.
