Well, maybe on the surface layer...

Didn't bother me when I first watched them as a teenager that most of
them didn't always make a lot of sense.

Later, I kind of figured out they were like James J. Angleton's
"wilderness of mirrors", and never would make sense. You were always
supposed to be left wondering if you'd really solved it or was there
another meaning you might have missed.

In the contemporary real world, who was the mole? After the "Third Man",
was there a fourth man? A fifth? A sixth? Will we ever know?

From that angle they all make sense, once you realize you don't know
the whole story, and probably never will. In the end, even after they've
escaped the village no one is ever really free. They and we are always
left looking over our shoulder to see if someone is lurking up behind us.

It's the same shivery, "it almost could be true" that sells Stephen King
books and made the X-files such a culture phenomena.

Anyway, it was entertaining and fun. And they had a better effects

James Bond meets the Twilight Zone.

The underlying premise is a "secret agent" decides to quit his job, and
he's kidnapped and taken to the village to brainwash him into telling why.

That premise provides a framework from which to hang various SciFi &
adventure stories.

The modern version of car he drives in the opening sequence (visually, almost
identical to the 1966 model) was named Top Gear's 2008 car of the year.

The Prisoner is a fascinating series but I found McGoohan somewhat of a one
trick pony in other parts.

I think I saw most of the episodes, forget how old I was, but probably when
they were first shown on TV in the US.

I never knew what was going on (well, except it seemed to be a debriefing
and retirement center for former spies.)

It always seemed to be going somewhere but never did. Frankly, I ended up
frustrated with it. Although it was creative, it was annoying. I prefer my
sci-fi less vague. McGoohan was very good though, otherwise I probably wouldn't

have bothered with it.

The Prisoner must have been on about the middle of my graduate-school
days. Many things going on in my life at the time, but I expect that
I saw 80% of the episodes. In the early 80's a friend and I (she who
is now my wife) did a 3-week bicycle-and-train visit to England and
Wales. Welsh friends strongly encouraged us to pass through
Portmeirion; we did, and I kept thinking "I have seen this before."
But never made the connection to the show.

I'll have to go look for the DVD set you mention Godfrey,

Godspeed, Patrick McGoohan!

"The Prisoner" series ran as a summer special through the summer of
1968 on public broadcasting in New York, IIRC. The year I started
high school... I watched every episode. My best friend at the time
was so enamored of the series that he managed to convince his
parents to spend their summer holiday at Port Meriam in Wales the
following summer. It was a fascinating series, an amazing follow-on

I have both series, in their entirety, on DVD. I'll have to pull
out The Prisoner and watch it again. The DVD set has some very
interesting production notes.
