I hate Flash but I hate obnoxious animated ads even more. I run a Flash
blocker to get rid of them... but if Flash disappears they'll use HTML5 /
javascript, and turning those off will have too much collateral damage.

So I'd much rather keep Flash around.

I don't think I've ever heard of an OS vendor doing something like this
before. Surely the only inference one can draw from it is that their OS is
not good enough to protect itself properly.

That or they're just out to get Adobe. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad
thing - the latest versions of Lightroom are now too bloated for me to run
them comfortably on the boxes I currently have.

Microsoft, Java/Javascript in IE. Any console system, every other cell

In this case, Apple is NOT an OS Vendor, they're selling a box and a

to give a 3rd party control of part of the deal. It's pretty much
standard operating procedure for anyone selling closed systems like a

The reason I don't have one is because everyone I know who has one

because they can't get whatever they're trying to do to work.

Meanwhile, if I want to make a phone call, my cell phone works and if
I need to run a computer program, I use my computer.

I also don't text, I don't facebook, I don't tweet, and I don't blog.
For one thing, I already have enough reasons for not being out taking

in one very important respect it is an open platform -- you can run any
web app you want; the iPhone/iPad browser is a very good HTML5 platform,
and can store data locally; now that the iPad is big enough, i think
we'll see a lot more great solutions in that space, and Apple has no
control over them

but if you want to build an app that has access to OS internals (and
your private information), Apple controls that space, and as a result it
will probably avoid most of the coming epidemic of mobile platform
insecurity vectors

and even with that control hundreds of thousands of apps have been
created; i wonder if the number would be so high without Apple's
control, or if there would be a million apps and a horrible experience
sorting through them and keeping them from messing with my data

While entitled to you r opinion, one I value by the way, the majority
of posts in response to the above article of yours are more along the
lines of this post:

From: Jonathan Van Matre (Apr 29 2010, at 10:54)
They're not being forbidden to try. They are being forbidden to half-
ass it.
No one qualifies for the Olympic team based on reputation alone. No
one gets a bank loan on the strength of nothing but their good
intentions.

You're right: past history matters.
And the history of the Flash experience on OSX (aggressive memory
consumption, memory leaks, browser crashes, OS crashes) as well as the
history of Adobe's efforts to deliver a stable mobile Flash experience
(keeping that four-word phrase firmly in oxymoron territory)
demonstrates that Adobe is not ready to qualify. This is an upper-
division class and they haven't fulfilled the prerequisites.
Flash was the right technology at the right time. It has been a
crucial part of the development of the online experience. But that
doesn't mean Adobe should be allowed to coast in to every new frontier
un-vetted.
I detect a not at all subtle subtext from Steve Jobs saying If you
had only shown us you had what it takes, it wouldn't have come to
this. I think he is actually baiting them to try, but he wants them
to bring their best, not something that is barely good enough.
Demanding excellence from others you know to be capable of that
excellence is not a prohibition on trying; it's an exhortation to try
harder.

it's been building for months:

http://daringfireball.net/2010/01/apple_adobe_flash

it's only come to a head because Adobe decided in lieu of Flash they'd
build a Flash-to-iPhone app compiler and Apple took a stand that apps
made with compilers like this weren't going to be allowed.

now, if Adobe created a Flash-to-HTML5 compiler, you could run the
