Over the last 15 years our climate here in Western Europe has become so
temperate that we hardly get to see any ice. Our last real snow that
lasted longer than 2 or 3 days was in 2010. But of course climate change
doesn't exist...

Lovely gallery everyone - nice and serene..

Mark's leaf in snow is my "wow"  pick this month.. (as long as he swears

Re: October PUG is up

2020-10-09 Thread ann sanfedele

Thanks Christine , and I agree with you on Henk's and told him so already..
as to the quilts... - it was a fabulous exhibit - this is the only shot
I have from it because I loaded it to SmUGMUG.. the rest were lost when
I had a little crash on the old 'puter - about a years worth of images
.. my fault entirely from moving things around wrong on the hard drive
and then fragging.. some recovery but not all .  much too expensive to
try for more.  I comforted myself that most of what I felt was worth
keeping had been uploaded to Smugmug or still existed on a cf card or an
external drive.

Excellent gallery. All are great. I have a weak spot for dragonflies
and this one in particular :)
Once again I missed the deadline.

Would it be an idea to have high res photos? If possible with the
PhotoSwipe viewer. The galleries are always high quality, 800px
reduces the viewing pleasure a little.
I'm happy to help if needed.

Re: October PUG is up

Once again, Brian, thank you for all the hard work and talent you devote to
keeping the PUG one of the best aspects of this list!

It's a small gallery, but quite a few excellent images there. My favorite
is Foggy Beach
by Patrick Temmerman, a powerful minimalist composition. A close second,
for me, is
Last Cast by Don Guthrie. The color is captivating, and the framing of the
main action by tree limbs is just perfect. I have tried similar shots of
fishermen at sunset, but none approach the magic Don's image displays.

Looking at it again, I realize there is a typo there, it was meant to read:
'Treading in circles'

It does not stand out well enough (got too small), but the 'circular' in this
image
was in the lower right hand, where the mill-operator (milnner ?) is actually
standing IN the large wheel that makes the whole windmill turn arround,
to direct it into the wind.

He is standing on the spokes to use his body-weight to make
turning the wheel a bit easier ...

Filip's image is of course the winner, by far. Not only is it well done,
and quite funny, but it has a two-headed nekkid woman hidden in there.
There rest of us combined couldn't come up with even one regular nekkid
lady.
Rick's banana is also very clever, humorous, well composed and full of
pleasing color. A great second banana to Filip's bathroom.

Brian was probably nervous too. My first thought was to post something
from one of my recent projects, but I couldn't find anything work-safe
enough so I decided to surprise you all by taking an unobvious route.

I agree with you Ann. Filipe, that shot is great fun. I had to examine
it closely to see the hidden surprise -- very clever! And so in fact
you have posted the only human nude in the gallery. Congrats! :)

By that standard, National Geographic wouldn't be allowed to have a
Facebook account.

It's less than a month since the brouhaha when Facebook censored Nick
Ut's iconic "Napalm Girl" for nudity.

But I still can't see the studios where we work, in an anonymous strip

That's a claim that's bound to tie them in knots of cultural relativism (a
beautifully self-refuting argument). Putting this sort of ban on nudity is not
being very sensitive to Western European cultures, for example, where freedom
of expression generally outweighs men's fear of women's bodies, or adherence to
Bronze Age nomads' ideas of morality. Didn't they host a number of decapitation
videos at one time?

Just one more reason not to use stuff like Facebook, which, like others, is in
any case trying to monopolise and control access to the internet.

Actually knowing the culture of Facebook, it's more PC standards than US
TV standards from 1950 though in some cases it's hard to tell the
difference, in others it's not hard at all. I guess you could call it a
bluenose convergence, but with homosexuality thrown in.

Yeah: hour or two drive and over-photographed. Either one is kind of
the death knell for me, but together ...

If one or more nude figures appeared in it I could be interested.

I'm late... Thansk for liking my Mt St Helen's shot - it was the first
thing I thought of and dug out the print to scan... but now after

seeing the whole gallyer - which definitely is solid through and
through, I remembered I had a balloon festival shot from the old days -
the Albuquerque one

that would have suited as will... Glad someone did do the balloon thing :-)

Henk, Rick and Phillip floated my boat the most this month- and Filip's

They do have some image analysis algorithms -- deeply flawed -- that
they unsuccessfully employ. These only manage to annoy legitimate
posters. Most of the time they rely on snitches (a mix of enemies, Mrs
Grundy's and self-appointed Net.Cops) to report images and links.

I came up with two that I thought I could submit for iconic places, until I
checked them in Lightroom and found one I took with my 'phone, and the other
has no Pentax body/lens content. It looks like a trawl through the slides
where I know they were taken by an MX or LX, as that was all I had. Other
options might stretch the boundary of the subject, but may be my only
choice. I do like the idea of a subject each month, even if it doesn't work
to my advantage!

Too many wonderful images to comment on. My favorites are Jack’s “Cathedral

Igor’s “Up to the Sky,” and Joseph’s “Lunch at the Museum."

Re: October PUG - UP - is Up!

2016-10-03 Thread Alan C
A fine gallery as usual. I don't often comment but must say I now know that
REMAX is international. The only hot air balloon we have ever had in
Phalaborwa was exactly like the one in Gonz's contribution. Then, the Museum
Lunch - what a venue - the patrons must feel like royalty.

G'day all,

For me, this is one of the most enjoyable galleries this year with a
diverse range of interpretations.

Bruce's 'Skipping' is up to his usual high standard and is my favorite
with Matthew's 'Stairway to Nowhere', Bill's 'Flying Fortress' and Ann's
'Up Mt. St Helens - 1991' also very enjoyable.

For some unexpected interpretations of the theme, check out the
submissions by Alan, John and Jan.

As usual you'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery
there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

Next up: 'Iconic Places'

2016-10-03 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
It is indeed an enjoyable and interesting gallery!

Once again, thank you so much, Brian, for all your efforts on our behalf
and the wonderful way you gather and display the images ach month.

My favorite is Bruce Walker's "Skipping." It is a colorful and dynamic
image with strong composition and balance. The look on her face is the
icing on the cake.

I am also quite fond of Matthew hunt's "Stairway to Nowhere": That is a
great composition of an interesting scene, rendered with lots of detail and
textures. "Lunch at the Museum" by Joseph Tainter also grabs my eye and my
imagination; it clearly and effectively depicts that lovely venue.

Overall, a really great PUG!

Another excellent gallery, two that stood out for me:

Early Morning Paddock - Rick Womer
Going Up! - Brian Walters

I struggled to find a suitable image for this one, and 'Iconic Places' is
going to be another.
