From: Subash <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> hi, since we are on the subject of revisionist history, i thought i'll dig up this old photo from december 07 from one of our flickr group photo walks... we have a war memorial here, built in 1939 in memory of those who died in WWI and later extended to include WWII and a few others which india bought with china and pakistan post independence. it is a huge circular structure with a tower in the middle, with the circular structure naming the various theatre of operations and those who died there. this is a shot of the base of the central tower: http://picasaweb.google.com/pdml.live/PESO#5257224399856328722 nobody knows when 'empire' was changed to 'nation' but obviously it was. what do you guys think? Re: PESO: Empire into nation
A stirling memorial, Subash. One would think that the granite could have been more carefully matched when they inserted "The Nation" into it. :-) I was moved by the story of your father, and have a pleasant mental picture of him, ear cocked to the 12-band taking note of the code as it came across. A generation from now that skill will all but be lost as Morse Code has been phased out of most training. Re: PESO: Empire into nation
I think NATION is a perfectly appropriate change, but revisions can get troubling. At services this Yom Kipur, half the congregation had newly revised prayer books, and half had the older copies. The Reform Judaism governing body decided that the prayers should be gender neutral, so all references to God as Father, Lord, King, etc. were expunged. Half the congregation was reading 'O Lord', the other half reading 'O sovereign one'. Sometimes you ought to just let the metafors stand. Regards, Bob S. RE: PESO: Empire into nation
I don't think it is entirely revisionist. You say that the memorial includes people who died after indendence and after the end of the raj, so it seems to be entirely fitting to say that they died for their nation. With a little stretch of the imagination you could also say that people who died in the WWs did so for their nation. I should think it would have been changed when they inscribed the names of people who died in wars following the end of the raj. It always amazes how little bitterness Indian people seem to have towards the British. Even though we ruled India for centuries, and did some unspeakable things, Indians always seem very warm towards us.
