I like the framing and the background is perfect.
Seems a schoosh over sharp to me.

 G'day All.

Well, this is my very first PESO.
I was out this afternoon getting some trigger time with the *ist Ds.
I really liked the look of this Red Native against the bark of the
Spotted Gum (Eucalyptus Maculata) as a back drop.
I welcome all comments on this Image.
 I am eager to learn.

G'day All.

Thanks to all for the comments on my first PESO.

Kenneth. The leaves on the LRH side. I tried to move to the left, but I
lost the background. I couldn't break them off due to the fact that the
missus would have kicked my arse.

Jack. The sharpness was straight out of the *ist Ds on default settings
6Mpixel Jepg.

Paul. Thanks. The colour was what caught my eye.

Tim. The light was coming from the right at about 3 O'clock.

Bruce. You're right of course. A lower angle may have improved the
overall image, including looking directly into the flower. I only took
one exposure of the flower. Must get used to having a DELETE button on
a camera, thus allowing more goes to get it right unlike film :-)

Frank. Thanks heaps.

Rod. You must be the King of lateral thinking. I would never have
thought of Styrofoam as a reflector. In hind sight, this would have been
the duck guts, rather than using the pop-up flash.

I intended to reshoot it this afternoon, using the suggestions from the
list. However we are in the middle of a severe thunderstorm with hail
the size of tennis balls.

Once again,
Thanks to all who responded.
Hooroo.
Regards, Trevor.

Nice. :-) I like the colours and the composition, but I find the
shadows from the pop-up flash a bit distracting...

G'day Steve.
Thanks for the feedback.
I was intending to use the pop-up flash for fill flash due to the sun
being low in the sky and lighting the scene from the low right of the
image.

A good eye a wonderful capture.
My only nit is the intruding leave tip on the LRH side. Other than that I'd say
its purfect!

Looks like you might be ready to teach.

Trevor,
Like it! If mine, I'd want to try a 'wink' flash for pedal balance.
I'd not, however, want to include the background in the flash range.
May not be available to you to re-shoot and, if not, it's terrific as
is.
Alas, I can't help feeling that sharpening is near to being a bit much.

I like the background. The composition is good. Still I can't make up my
mind.
The shadows don't look right. I can't figure out the direction of the
natural light. This disturbs me.

Re: PESO: Red Native

2005-10-26 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hello Trevor,

Glad that you shared with us. It is always nice to see others work
and to be able to provide comments.

For me, this image is a bit over the top with the flash. Rather than
being fill, it lights up the flower and green parts too much so that
it doesn't blend at all with the background. Now this could just be
me, but it causes it to jump out in an unnatural way. I'm not much of
a fill flash person when it comes to plants (use it quite a bit with
weddings and portraits though).

I think you spotted something that does have merit with it's colors
and the background. I would have also like to see a lower angle -
more looking directly at the open blossom. Not sure if it would be
better, but certainly worth the effort. I know with my stuff, I'll
spot what I want to shoot, but take several frames with different
perspectives and different DOF. Many times my first image is not the
one of choice.

My 2 bits...

Best regards,
Bruce
