Hello William
Over here, it's about the same. A few companies are dominating the
business.
Still I think it's a free market. I can try to get a piece of the cake, if
I want.

I am current trying too start/run a business doing photography for
planning purposes - www.planfoto.dk. I know thee'll be times with very few
or no orders, so I'm looking for supplementary sources of income.
Portraits could be one of them. School portraits doesn't hjave to make you
rich, but if you have enough orders, the salery is quite good. One school
class = 1-2 weeks salery. It's like photographing in an assembly line.

A frind of mine once said: You can make a living from just about anything,
if you organize it well. I guess this goes for school photography too.

I actually know a photographer, who became quite whealty this way.

It certainly can be done. The important thing is consistency. Set our lights
up one way and don't EVER adjust their position.
It's different for grad photos, which I actually like doing. You have a
little more leeway, but still, keep your ratios reasonable.

Yousuf Karsch doesn't sell to grandmothers.

Photographers are too hard to train. They always think they have a better
way (which they do), and they tend to be loose cannons in the studio.

Hello again I should also mention, that I found software, that can
make templates for printing and publishing images in a package.

It's called PrintSix. It's not very expensive (60-160 USD) and comes
in different versions. http://www.sixdigitalphotos.com/templates.htm

Unfortunately I don't think this software can save your work as one
JPG or TIF file for later use.

I don't know about saving the template as a single image, but it will
only work with jpegs.

You have to dig down a bit through the site to find it, but they do have
an email contact address, so you could ask them if you can save the
finished layout as a new image:

Thanks again, John, Cotty and others.
I played around with the Pickture Package thing in Photoshop CS (7) and found
out:
1. I can make a Picture Pacage from all images in an image folder automatically.
2. I can change/customize the layout I wnat to use (combination of image sizes
in each package).
This is actually what I want. And I think it works great.
My only concern is, that the final package sizes seem to be unchangeable (?).
That's a pity, since I want to use the very same paper sizes, that my photo dealer offers. I'll get my new EPSON printer next week (just a small, cheep one). Perhaps I can find the rigt sizes for this.

The Photoshop tutorial that led me to Picture Packages was on how to
create additional custom packages if the default ones wouldn't fit what
you needed. The package layouts are stored in text files.

It explained the notation Photoshop uses to guide a layout and where to
save the ones you write.
