I'm not sure where the Ricoh source is. But you are correct, it seems

Thanks, Matt. This occurred to me while at school and I don't have the
flash handy but I think it does show "35mm equivalent" focal lengths.
This makes sense as the flash was probably made to be
backwards-compatible with film cameras. Come to think of it, it was
probably made to be compatible with the 645D, so it should be no
surprise that accommodating different Angles of View is part of the
design.

I have a P-TTL Metz 48 AF-1 that shows the focal length on the LCD. On
my APS-C cameras, the focal length displayed on the flash is the
35mm-equivalent focal length. (That is, if I have a 50mm lens on the
camera, the flash shows 75mm.) So I think the Pentax flash protocol is
working in 35mm focal lengths already, and the APS-C cameras fudge it
so the flash covers the APS-C FOV.

If the AF540GZ displays the focal length, and it's the true focal
length (not 35mm-equivalent), then I would speculate that either the
flash is fudging it back to APS-C for display purposes (so you might
need a firmware update for display accuracy) or the flash protocol is
designed to explicitly support both FF and APS-C (but Metz didn't
implement that part of the protocol). Either way, I think you'll be OK
as far as the actual flash zoom mechanism is concerned.

Re: The Full-Frame "Thursday" rumour

2016-02-18 Thread P.J. Alling
Well there doesn't seem to be a problem when using the FGZ flashes with
the 645 digital cameras. The zoom head is set to the proper coverage
for the lens and format, I expect it will be the same for the K-1. That
will probably be complicated by the K-1 supporting both APS-C and
24-36mm formats, (we have got to come up with a better terminology than
full frame or 35mm format for digital cameras), but the coding isn't all
that difficult to imagine, and wouldn't be that difficult to implement.

I'm pretty sure that the firmware for the 645z and K-3 better than 90%
identical.

The same is probably true for the K-5 series and 645D.

Pentax does that, leveraging the hardware and software for the K series
and 645 series cameras off each other.

I would hope either the camera or the flash makes the necessary
adjustments without the end user needing to do anything like update
firmware or buy a new flash unit.

Re: The Full-Frame "Thursday" rumour

2016-02-18 Thread P.J. Alling
The 1.7 is a very nice converter. It works well, but you are limited to
the central AF point, the adapter defaults the camera to believing that
any lens is a K, M, or A class.

I've used it a lot, but the suggestions for use are simply misleading.
Instead of leaving the lens focused at infinity, I first get close by
focusing manually then activate auto focus, usually it snaps right into
focus even with older cameras. The problem is you cannot just trust to
auto focus with the adapter.

Pentax didn't recommend it for use with lenses slower than f2.8. I find
it works reliably with f4.0 lenses on the K20D and K-5II in most
lighting and the *ist-D series in relatively bright light.

I don't remember at this point exactly how well it worked with AF film
cameras, but I got pretty good results with the LX after figuring out
how to set the adapter to it's infinity focus point.

Re: The Full-Frame "Thursday" rumour

2016-02-18 Thread Paul Stenquist
I figure I'll use the 1.4 in crop mode or on my K3 for small bird photography
with the 150/450. That's been working fine so far. For anything else I shoot,
450mm will be plenty on the K1. The problem with the 1.7 has always been
unreliable autofocus. I don't think I want one.

2016-02-18 Thread Darren Addy
Thanks for the heads-up on the 1.4x vs 1.7x converters. I would
imagine that a new FF converter is on the drawing boards right now,
but in the meantime this means that the used market on these is going
to take a big jump. I just snagged an EXC+ one from KEH for $239,
which is about 50% less than they were going for before the 1.4x was
introduced. I have the feeling that the 1.7x will be in the upper 300s
and lower 400s very soon - once MORE people realize this.

I don't plan on being an early adopter of the K-1, but that is one
piece that will be valuable regardless (including on my K-3 II).

You can't tell a lot through the viewfinder. Pixel peeping will show
all the warts. Even then when making prints or display sized files for
that matter, the edge effects may be acceptable.

I tried mounting some of my lenses on a full frame Pentax body and

There was surprisingly little vignetting in the corners, suggesting
that the useable image size with so called digital lenses may be
larger than APS-C size on a K1.

This does not give any idea of the image quality around the edges, but
it is very encouraging, especially for my Limited and DA* lenses.

At that price I think you'd want more than one barrel...

At the current exchange rate, the price in Australia would be just north
of $2500. Even if I was in the market for FF, that's more than I'd be

Hmm.

If we take it as a percentage, it's .28pc , so if your income tax bill
was short by .28pc on say 200,000 ASD, and the govt was still owing you
560 bucks, you wouldn't mind?

To verify this rumor I believe you will need to buy a K-1, carefully remove the
sensor, and do a careful measurement in the presence of at least 5 certified
PDML observers. Later you can install the sensor in your video camera, thereby
upgrading that rig…

Sensor size: 35.9 x 24.0mm

Of course, 35mm film expressed its frame size in whole numbers. So it
would be appropriate (apples to apples) to round 35.9 x 24.0 to remove
the decimal point let's see. What do we get?

Rumor I read is the wraps come off at the beginning of CP+. That would
be Thursday a week; 25 Feb.

on Facebook for the official K-1 unveiling at 6:00 p.m. (German time)
on Thursday and they give the location as being Pentax Ricoh Imaging
in Hamburg. That's pretty damned specific...
