Re: Semi-OT: Thunderbird update 78.5.1 is fucked up!

2020-12-13 Thread John

Someone asked why I still use Yahoo if I hate it so much? ...

I don't really hate it, although it can be a PITA sometimes & their "help" is no
help at all. BUT

I got the Yahoo account while I was in the National Guard because the Army
wanted us to have an account separate from AKO (Army Knowledge Online) which
they used for OFFICIAL email communication with soldiers.

Just after I retired from the National Guard, the Army decided retirees would no
longer have access to AKO if we didn't have a CAC card & access to a government
computer on a government network.

I had to set up a "forward" file on my AKO account and the only other account I
had at the time was the Yahoo one. I still occasionally (rarely) get OFFICIAL
email from the Army and it goes to my Yahoo account.

As I no longer have any way to get into the AKO account to change the forward
file, I *have* to keep the Yahoo account.

Plus it IS the backup account I use for PDML in case Roadrunner goes kaput
again.

I did finally get Thunderbird signed into Yahoo.

Well, I don't see you complaining about them constantly, Rick. My partner uses
Yahoo as well … He doesn't complain about it either. I also have Yahoo
accounts. I find them a pain in the butt so I don't use them; I haven't deleted
them because there's no real point to that. But I don't worry that they're a
pain in the butt, I just ignore them. Same for Gmail.

My point is: If you're complaining about something all the time, and there are
better alternatives out there, switch over to one of those and be happy. It's
worth the pain in the butt then to do what you have to do to move your stuff to
something else.

I have about 25 years of emails stored on my hard drive. I used Eudora
Pro as my email client for most of 20 years, and switched to Thunderbird
when changes in certificates rendered Eudora useless.

Looking online I found that you can selectively color individual icons. I don't
want to selectively color individual icons. That's BULLSHIT!

The Yahoo problem is bigger. Every time Thunderbird checks for new emails (about
once every 10 minutes for as long as I keep Thunderbird open) it pops up a
browser window with a login prompt that has *NO CONTROLS*.

The browser window is on top of every other window I might have open at that
point.

If I attempt to log in by selecting my Yahoo ID it comes back with a message
telling me to "enable cookies in my browser and try again".

I have cookies enabled in my browsers, and I have all of the scripts I need to
use Yahoo as webmail enabled in NoScript.

And Yahoo are complete shit at technical support, even if you can dig down far
enough to find a way to contact them.

I'm not having it try to get me to log into Yahoo, it did change the
default colors and font, and reinstalled the broken reply button, (I had
to install an plugin to get rid of it, since they helpfully removed that
option), but eh, it's a free tool so I'm not going to complain too
much.  I'm sure there's a setting or plugin to give control over the
Yahoo nonsense, but I can't tell you what it is, since I don't have that
particular problem.

I do wish that their programming team would actually read the email
standard and adhere to it instead of making things work the way /they/
think it should work.
