Old Tamron Lens Questions

2013-11-12 Thread John
I have been considering the purchase of a 25-35mm to something lens. In
the decision process I went into my drawer of previous lenses too
precious to sell. (translation: Once in the drawer, they get lost in the
memory ) Out came a Tamron screw mount short (35-135 f 3.5) Macro Zoom.

I don't remember this lens and do not understand how to use it. Having
an available adapter, it is now sitting on my istDS. I have no
questions on the zoom settings but don't understand the macro
settings. There are additional settings that change the focus slightly
by changing some focus point at the mount and allow the lens to be
focused closer to the subject at the long zoom end. There are
indicators on the bottom of the barrel of the lens and these range from
1:4 to 1:7. What are these indicators on the macro side trying to tell
me? It appears that there is not a great change in focus distance and
picture size as I move the lens setting from 1:4 to 1:7 and the image
does not seem to change radically as I move the zoom in and out although
the focus distance does decrease.

Is this a good learning tool or do I have an additional paper weight to
add to the collection? Can this lens be used on the K-series and what
is the impact on a full frame camera if one appeared? I would guess
that the coverage would be fine as it was designed for a film camera?

Thanks for reading this.

John from Mass.

Re: Old Tamron Lens Questions

2013-11-12 Thread Zos Xavius
Maybe the difference between 1:7 and 1:4 is not that much? It should
probably give you the closest focus at the wide end in macro mode if
it allows that. Some lenses will only lock into macro at a particular
focal length.

A lot of macro zooms have you move the zoom to one end or the other of
the zoom range, then do something to the lens, twist it or something,
and then the zoom slider changes the focus rather than the focal length.

It is possibly a good tool for learning how to use google and see
if there is any documentation on the lens. Or any posts on the net

It should be at least as sharp as it was on filem.
You'll just notice the lack of sharpness more.

Re: Old Tamron Lens Questions

2013-11-12 Thread Darren Addy
John,
Taking a guess here, it sounds like you may have a Tamron Adaptall
lens with the m42 adaptall mount attached. (You could get a KM
adaptall mount to replace the m42 adaptall mount and save yourself the
need of an m42 to K adapter.

If it is an Adaptall lens, it is probably either a 22A or a 40A (model
number). Since you mention that it is macro at the LONG end, I'm
guessing it is the 22A:
http://www.adaptall-2.org/lenses/22A.html

If that is the lens, here are a couple of threads with sample images:
http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic.php?t=39934view=previous
http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic.php?t=41767view=previous

Otherwise the 40A page is here: http://www.adaptall-2.org/lenses/40A.html
That page says that it has the macro focus on the short end (35mm)

The Tamron lenses I've had or used have been fine performers. Pity that
now the plastic barrels of some of their lenses don't inspire a lot of

And those Sigma HSM are incompatible with pre-K100DSuper/K10D AF-wise.

Oh, also to note that since a couple of those Sigma are 35mm lenses,
they will cover 'FF' format but... will not be able to AF with ANY
camera but K100Ds/K10D/K20D/K200D anfd later.

You probably know this but I wanna be sure everyone knows.

I still use a couple film cameras although lightly. I know I would
bitch not being able to AF with a 70-210/2.8 on my Z1 or an MZ-S.

It is not the first time I mention this in the list, but I had the Sigma
70-200 2.8 HSM in Nikon AF mount until last week (sold it to a guy who
uses a Nikon D300), and focusing isn't any faster than my FA* 80-200 2.8

main (and possibly only) advantage of Sigma HSM lenses over the

I had this Sigma with HSM in Nikon mount. It wasn't as fast as
Dario's 70-200/2.8 in K mount screwdriven by *istD. If Dario reads it
he may confirm this. AFAIR it was about as fast as DA* 50-135 despite
ring USM motor, so nothing special. Contrary to this Canon L
70-200/2.8 IS was much faster when I tried it.

Yes, I am interested as well. Will just have to wait and see what come

I have mixed emotions on the Sigma products. I own their P-TTL flash

three of their lenses over the years and have not been happy with a

Re: Tamron lens

2008-02-05 Thread John Francis

Pentax have suggested that some future DA* lenses might not be
dual-drive. That leaves the door open for them to switch to
ring motors for at least some lenses.

My bet is that it won't happen for a couple of years, though.
And when it does happen, people will be able to whine about
missing AF capability with their K100D, as well as about the
missing aperture simulator on the K9D ...

It's screwdriver drive. Tamron only does in-lens motors on Canon, and
even then it's just traditional DC drive, not USM in any variant. Only
Sigma and Leica do aftermarket USM motors (Sigma calls these HSM, leica
doesn't specify, but as far as I'm aware both Leica D lenses for 4/3rds
are USM drive)

I owned a Tamron 28-200. Bought it new, not quite 2
yrs ago when I bought the 10D. It was an XR version,
but not the current XR Di.
I ebayed it a couple of months later. Didn't like it
much. Very soft. Handy range though :-)

Kevin, I have not used this. Probably some list members have. I believe,
though, that Tamron has brought out different models of this, with newer
ones being better performers. Older ones, from what I have read, weren't
so good. You might want to determine which version you have. If this was
bundled with a D, it may be old stock that someone was trying to move.

You know, of course, that zooms with this great a range are not as good
as zooms with a more conservative range.

Re: Tamron Lens

2005-04-11 Thread David Volkert
Kevin,
I've used 2 of the Tamron 28-200mm. The first was labeled 171D (if I
remember right), I bought it off ebay for around $50, and the second is
a 571D, bought from KEH for about $60. I got rid of the first when the
outer element got some play in it and it turned into a soft focus lens.
The second has held up alot better. I've used it just as a general use
lens but I try to keep it between 50mm and 150mm, before that it's got
too much distortion and after that its too soft. Autofocus is rather
slow in low light and the contrast sucks 90% of the time.

I still have it around because it fits a gap in my lens selection. I
suppose it would be a great lens to take on vacation (if you're just
taking snap shots) since you wouldn't have to carry another lens to get
a good range.

Here's an shot from the lens:
http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=9177736size=o
This was shot with an *Ist D, at 200mm F/5.6. You can tell that its
plenty soft at the long end.

http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~parsog/Guy/tamron28200.html - This page
talks about the differences between the different versions but it
doesn't mention anything before the 571D version, I think there were 2
before that.

WTB: Tamron lens hood for SP 3.5/70-210

2002-05-18 Thread Frantisek Vlcek

Hi,
I bought this zoom without the lens hood, it's Lens # 19AH, dunno
what's the # of the hood, but it has outer bayonet (meaning it
bayonets to the inside of the lens outer barrel). The hood would
really help - anyone has for sale?

   Thanks

Good light,
 Frantisek Vlcek

Tamron Lens Cap

2001-06-07 Thread Camdir

Hello.

Someone (whose enquiry was mislaid) asked about a replacement cap for a
Tamron 300mm F2.8. It turned up on our delivery from Japan. So, whoever you
are, we have it for you.

Kind regards

Peter

Thanks for your help on this question and the flash question.

While I can't find this exact lens, I'd say not too much, unfortunently.
 Probably $50 with that dent.
