At one point I did a test where every time I'd change batteries I'd take
a photo of the battery I had just replaced. By using the shutter count
I'd have an idea of how many photos I got out of each battery.

In short, on the K-5ii(?) I saw no significant difference in performance
between pentax branded and cheap batteries, and no I don't remember the
brand. I've noticed that the K-1 uses batteries up a LOT faster. My
thought is that third party batteries are really cheap and bringing a
couple as spares doesn't add a whole lot of weight in your luggage and
can make life a lot easier if you don't actually charge everything up
the night before, or you lose one. You don't have to carry everything
with you in your backpack all the time.

Mark Roberts wrote:

Can anyone recommend options for third-party batteries for Pentax? I'm

There are a lot of options out there with varying specifications and
user reports vary even more wildly. One resourceful buyer who wrote an
Amazon review actually measured the discharge rate of a so-called
2100mAh battery and found it to be around 1100mAh. Mind you, for less
than $10.00 that would still be an attractive alternative to the
$50.00 Pentax OEM battery if I did all my work in the studio! But when
trekking through Yorkshire on the Pennine Way in May I'd like to get
longer battery life than that; I'm planning on carrying two batteries
- one in the camera and one in my pack - and recharging every night.
I'm not a machine gunner so even with GPS on that should work out if
battery life is reasonable.

It's used, and they're showing a stock photo.  I wouldn't buy it either.

The issue with lithium rechargeable is that they age from the date of
manufacture.  Charging cycles have much less effect that on other
batteries with other chemistries such as NiHM or NiCad while simple age
will effect them much more.

You really want to get a newly manufactured battery.

Re: Experience with third-party batteries

2018-03-05 Thread P. J. Alling
I have a Watson branded extra battery that I'm using in the K-5II the
specifications were a bit better than the Pentax branded version that
came with the camera and I haven't noticed any real difference between
the two batteries.  They both hold a charge about as long and I get a
similar number of exposures per charge.

On the other hand I have a Flashpoint branded DL-I50 for the K20D which
from it's purchase had noticeably less power reserves than the Pentax
branded battery that came with that camera, despite also having better
specifications on paper.  Using the K20D I don't ever remember running
out of power with the OEM battery during normal usage, and the spare was
only there to be used in a pinch.

Sadly I think that brand names on third party, (unless you're buying a
big brand), batteries are kind of a crap shoot.  I've read reviews that
show the exact opposite of my experience with those two brands.

I wouldn't buy that battery unless there is a reliable full-refund return
policy (like with Amazon Prime). As the proverb says: "I am not rich
enough to buy cheap things".
A lot of stores are sloppy with posting specs and photos of their
products, especially small accessories.

Zeikos battery that I bought from Buydig was listed by BuyDig/BeachCamera
as being a 3.7 V battery (as opposed to the OEM rated at 7.2 V) for a long
period of time, even after I've shown them a proof.

I've posted that story back in 2011 on this list:
http://pdml.net/pipermail/pdml_pdml.net/2011-May/277442.html

And that store was considered one of the better once, at least back then.
(I thought it slid down since then, but resellerratings still rates them
at 9.5/10)

Third Party Batteries

2012-06-04 Thread Bipin Gupta
I am certain Auld Tymer Digital PDMLers would have had an over dose of
this topic which is on some (20) World Class Photo Forums like Pentax,
Photo Camel, DCRP, Shutter Talk, JJMehta etc.
95.70 % of the folks have said 3rd Party batteries are just as good,
as long as you buy them from good sources like Amazon, Adorama,
Battery Fly com, Energizer etc etc. They cost between $ 6 to 12
shipped vs the original for about $ 45. So the choice is yours.
I have been using 3rd Party + Original Pentax Batteries on my K20D and
K-5, and have found absolutely no difference. Being an electronic
buff, a DIY and a master mechanic, I keep a track of the voltage when
fully charged, half charged and discharged of 3rd Party as well as the
Originals. All my (9) batteries are going strong even after over (3)
years.
You are just plain unlucky (Bad Karma) if one has exploded on
you!!! So can bad Original Pentax batteries - after all Pentax and
the Canikons don't manufacture batteries.

Re: Third Party Batteries

2012-06-02 Thread Igor Roshchin

I bought the one by Zekos which is labeled to have much higher capacity
(2800 mAh) than the OEM from Pentax:
http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=ZELI90
http://www.amazon.com/Zeikos-ZE-LI90-Lithium-Battery-Replaces/dp/B002ZRPWPY/

It had been sold only by Buydig and Amazon, and doesn't seem to be
available anymore.
All other 3rd-party batteries that I've seen do not have this high
capacity. To be fair, - I haven't yet tried to measure/compare its true
capacity. I haven't had any problem over 1 year period since I bought
it. (I paid ~$17 for it.)

The battery that Buydig sells now is rated at 2100 mAh, and costs $14.50:
http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=VDPDLI90
The original Pentax battery is rated at 1860 mAh and costs $40-45.

Igor, I am not talking about the declared power rating of the batteries.
I am talking about the actual experience in terms of my regular shooting
and the moment when I had to replace the battery. I never _measure_
these things. I just use my gear and (being immodest here) being pretty
observant person, I notice things such as when I have to replace my
camera batteries.

2012-06-01 Thread Paul Stenquist
Thanks for the note, Christine. I may send the k-5 in for service anyway. I
think it' at about 30,000 frames. But both of my 560 flashes are in Chandler
now, so I'm going to wait and see what that costs me. Lots of frames on both
flashes as well, so I can count these snafus as normal service. But no
warranties.

Argh, sorry to hear that, Paul. I think I had over-charged by placing
an already charged battery back on the charger... whoops. But, I
would keep an eye on it not hesitate to send it in for repair -- my
camera started out with a few random issues like you describe, which
then quickly degenerated into full-on non-functionality. I also
found, like you, that a somewhat drained battery was less likely to
create problems. I thought it was interesting that putting a
problematic battery - the one that was in the k-5 when it was
flopping -- into the k-7 did not produce the flops in that camera.
That's when the k-5 went in for service. Luckily, it was a quick trip
to Arizona back -- they knew exactly what the problem was, had seen
it before, I gather... Since then, I have used the same batteries in
the k-5 without issue. Also, I don't worry too much about leaving the
batteries on the charger beyond the charging time... maybe I should...
but I haven't had any recurrence of the flops since getting it back
 from service.

 Good luck --

Happened to me as well. I charged both of my k-5 batteries -- grip and
camera -- last week. I usually charge just one, and then get the other next
time. I left each of them on the charger for a couple of hours after they
were fully charged. Right after charging the second battery, I tried to use
the camera, I experienced the mirror-flop disorder. At least that's what I
assume it was. The camera kept making a clicking noise when the shutter was
pushed and wouldn't function. I switched off the trip, and the camera
started working intermittently, so I turned on preview and left it on for a
few minutes. After that it worked fin, and I was able to switch the grip
back on. I'm going to go back to charging only one battery at a time and
taking care not to overcharge. Or if I do charge both at once, which I have
to do for big jobs, I'm going to make sure they don' t spend too much time
on the charger, and I'm going to leave the grip turned off until I've logged
 a few shots.

Once upon a time, my k-5 had mirror-flop disorder... in which the
mirror would randomly and repeatedly actuate, rendering picture-taking
impossible. (It was almost like blowing up!) There is some
speculation that could be initiated by an over-charged battery
disturbing the electrical ecosystem in the camera... I have no idea.
It was never a problem in the k-7. But, I'd caution against
 over-charging the batteries...

Is anyone using third party batteries in their K-7/K-5? The prices are

Re: Third Party Batteries

2012-06-01 Thread P. J. Alling
I can't say anything about third party batteries in the K5/7 but I've
been using a flashpoijnt battery in my K20D. It gives about 1/2 - 2/3
the number of shots as the OEM battery at about 1/4 the price. So it
makes economic sense.

Don't lose heart! They might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a
lengthily search.
