Only the older, adaptall, f2.5. The later, f2.8, autofocus version goes to 1:1.

To be exact, the f2.5 in Adaptall-2 or AF versions goes to 1:2, the
f2.8 in Adaptall-2 and AF versions goes to 1:1 (yes, both exist in AD2
and AF forms, but the f2.5 AF is rare and the f2.8 in AD2 is extremely
rare). We were talking about the f2.5 version here.

This has been chewing at me for about a week. I knew the 2.8 was
available manual focus - but not, afaik, ADII. Plenty of pictures out
there of alleged ADII lenses but they all seem to be ordinary mounts to
me. But then
http://www.tamron.co.jp/data/a2-lens/72b.htm The last of the ADII
lenses (1996) by the look of it.

The 2.5 AF? Never heard of, never mind seen, it. But now I have.

The 105mm Series 1 Macro is the same as the Kiron 105mm macro and should
sell for the same price (from what I've seen around $300).

Another higher priced option that people seem to speak highly of is the
Tamron SP 90mm macro.

105mm f2.5 Vivitar Series 1 macro. An outstandingly sharp lens and

for occasianal 1:1 ( I rarely need that, especially with APS format) you
can use an extension tube
or an achromatic diopter too
but if I was gonna do 1:1 a lot I would rather use a symmetrical
enlarging type lens on a bellows. At 1:1, nothing will match a good
symmetrical because well, your 1:1.

turning my 50mm macro into a 100mm macro

2009-02-21 Thread Larry Colen
I've got a DFA 50/2.8 macro and it works great. But, I find myself
wanting the 100mm macro. I can't really justify shelling out the money
for a new one right now. I see a few possibilities:

Act like a grownup and just wait until I have the money.

Put my macro focusing 2X TC on my PFA50/1.4 for a longer macro.

Put my 1.4X TC on my FA 77 for 108mm f/2.5 portrait lens

Sell my 50, and use the proceeds to buy a 100.

Find someone selling the 100 used.

Sell the 50 and buy a used 100.

So, I just thought I'd check out the level of interest in the 50 and
see if anyone as a 100 that they're thinking of selling.

Duplication.

Buy the Sigma 150 Macro. (150mm on a FF, 225mm on your digital)
The ability to distance yourself from the subject is usually desirable.

Get a set of extension tubes. No glass to degrade image.

Get rid of your 2X macro focusing teleconverter, replace both TCs when

There's a few options. All have long focus throws which is the biggest
issue in using a macro as a day-to-day lens.

The Kiron/lester Dine and Vivitar 105's are superb macros that make
very good general purpose lenses. They're at their best at macro
distances but still very good at normal distances
The Tamron 90's are rightly legendary as the 'Portrait' macro. Great
macro, great portrait lenses. Available most commonly as a adaptall-2
f2.5 version that does 1:2 or an AF f2.8 version that does 1:1. they
do well at infinity, but not as well as their 10' performance.
The Zeiss ZK Makro-Planar 100/2 is probably the best option available.
Unfortunately it costs more than any 3 other options combined. Which
is too bad since its worth every penny.
The various Pentax 100/2.8's are all excellent. The FA is probably the
best of the lot, with the D-FA's coming second. The FA 100/3.5 is good
but not nearly as good and somewhat poorly built as its a SMC-coated
version of the common Cosina design usually seen from Phoenix or
Vivitar. 100/4's are older designs but rather good in their own right
although the slow aperture makes them less useful for general use.
The Tokina and Vivitar 90mm's are also excellent, but rather more rare
and difficult to find in the KA versions that are better suited to
digital use.
The Sigma 105's are good all-round lenses but I'd consider them only
if the other options aren't available.

You could also convert a Leica or Contax 100/2.8 via a Leitax adaptor.
The Leica 100/2.8 APO is the sharpest ~100mm macro ever made. The
Contax is merely excellent and much cheaper.

And last of all is the Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 125/2.5. It's a bit
long and a bit rare, but is second only to the Leica in performance.
Used copies go for serious money though ($700-1000 typically) as it's
rare and it didn't make its reputation until after production ceased.

Yes, I do.

The Sigma 180mm f/3.5 EX DG APO Macro IF lens is a high performance
telemacro lens that can focus from infinity to full 1:1 lifesize
reproduction without accessories.

Convenient for photographing subjects which are not easily approached,
the 180mm f/3.5 Macro features apochromatic design, two SLD (Special
Low Dispersion) glass elements, and a floating inner focus (FIF)
system. A focus limiter switch aids in faster AF by restricting the
movement of the focusing mechanism to a smaller portion of its
enormous range. Usable with Sigma's 1.4X EX teleconverter as a 252mm f/
4.9 lens or with the 2X EX teleconverter as a 360mm f/7 lens in manual
focus only.

This lens is designed as a high-quality macro lens, good for film or
digital SLR cameras. The improved DG lens design corrects for various
aberrations. This macro lens is specially coated to get the best color
balance whilst cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the
digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against
lateral chromatic aberration which is a serious problem for digital
SLR cameras.

• Close focus capability of 18

Sigma # 105109- $725 at BH($26 a month if you're
strapped) :-)

It's incredibly sharp, has great bokeh, great colour, that legendary
Zeiss 3D look and is f2. Downsides pretty much come down to it being
bloody expensive ($1700 or so), only goes to 1:2 and isn't quite APO
corrected. The design is actually related to the 125/2.5 APO-Lanthar
Cosina made as a Voigtlander SL lens prior to getting the contract to
build the ZF/ZK line for Zeiss. You're pretty much getting the best
~100mm f2 available and one of the best ~100mm macros available all in
one package (and it costs less than buying 1 of each).

Re: turning my 50mm macro into a 100mm macro

2009-02-21 Thread Bob Sullivan
Larry,
Didn't you ask this question once before?
You won't get a different answer this time.

You won't get satisfactory macro pictures with a TC,
and you cant turn any of your existing lenses into a 100mm macro.
A macro extension tube (clear tube, no glass)on the 77mm will get you something.

Your options are:
1) Old Pentax K or A 100mm f4 Macro - slow but only $100+.
(You might find an old screwmount Takumar, but still $100+)
2) 3rd party 100mm f2.5 or f2.8 Macro (Vivitar, Kiron, Lester Dine,...) $100+
(Folks argue, but most all the '70's -'80's Macros have good reps.)
3) Pentax A 100mm f2.8 Macro - very nice but $400+ (my favorite)
4) Pentax F or FA 100mm f2.8 Macro - same design(?) as #3 but autofocus - $400+
5) Latest Pentax D FA 100mm f2.8 Macro - $400+
6) Other exotic offerings like the Voightlander 125mm f2.5 Macro - $750+

Pick your poison. You want the 100mm working distance and 1 to 1
Macro magnifcation.
The extra speed of f2.8 is good too, so you can see what you're shooting.
But nobody is gonna sell you a $400+ lens for $50, and there's no way
around that.

Regards, Bob S.

A while back I was offered a 100/4 macro for about $100
since a lot of my interes in the dfa 100 was as a relatively fast 100,
though it would cost more, I may be better off with th 100/4 and saving
up a bit more for the 50-135 as a 2.8 moderate tele that covered 100

Or, considering how little macro work I actually do, a 135 m42 on my

I have this bad habit of when I don't have time to use my gear, I
