LR and PS are built around different metaphors. Layers are a graphic design
concept, not a photography concept. LR is built around the idea of a darkroom,
where there are no layers as far as I recall. This I think is key to
understanding LR.

What results can you achieve with layers etc. that you can't achieve in LR by a
more 'darkroomy' means?

I think these things often come down to people preferring what they're used to.
When they're used to doing something one way in a system, that can sometimes
seem like the only way. So if a new system achieves the same outcome
differently people can struggle to adapt, and find themselves fighting against
the new system, trying to force-fit it into the old metaphor. I've been
watching people do this at work for 35 years and I've been through it myself a
few times, notably when I first encountered a computer mouse, and also when I
discovered relational database theory, which I eventually decided is the dog's
bollocks and the secret of life itself (well almost - that accolade goes to
discrete mathematics).

I think you'd do well to buy one or two of the books about LR and spend a
weekend working your way through them. There are really 3 major topics to
consider and they feedback into each other to some extent:

1. What is your storage (and back-up) strategy. In my experience it's best to
use LR to manage everything rather than mixing LR and your OS's capabilities

2. Understand LR's workflow and adapt it within reason to suit yourself, but
try not to fight against it

3. How to use the various tools to achieve your ends. Think of it in terms of
ends rather than means and you won't be so frustrated when you can't find
things you might expect, like layers perhaps, which are a means to an end
rather than an end in themself, and you won't waste your time trying to learn
stuff you'll never use.

This is simply not true. LR does not move your files anywhere unless you tell
it to. It does not 'import them into its database'. The files either stay where
you put them, or they go where you tell LR to put them.

LR creates an entry in its catalogue containing information about your files,
it does not put the files themselves into the catalogue or any other form of
database. The information in the catalogue includes the location of the files
at the time the catalogue entry was created and last updated.

When people have lost their files it's because they, or the pixies, have moved
the files outside of LR and not updated the catalogue. You can't blame LR for
not being able to find the files any more than you can blame a librarian if
some misguided reader moves all the Jeffery Archer novels into the Great
Literature section.

LR provides ways for you to deal with this situation and re-catalogue the files
when you remember where the pixies put them.

The pixies once moved a bunch of my files when I first started using LR. It
told me it couldn't find them, I looked for them. I found them, I sorted out
the catalogue. What I didn't do was live the rest of my life under the illusion
that a piece of dumb software had fucked it up, and lie about it to people who
ask straightforward questions.

Re: OT - Peter Lik has a better camera than anyone else ...

2014-12-11 Thread Bob W-PDML
The turd in a tin is a better work than the photo, and didn't cost millions.
The article itself is a turd in type, with its talk about protecting an
investment. If the financial value was what mattered the Tate would have had a
better investment buying property in London, which earns far more than a can o'
crap.

My house looks like a work of modern art since yesterday morning when the
kitchen ceiling fell down. Perhaps Nick Serota would like to buy it.

I don't know if ann finds the statue offensive for the reason that others have
suggested the original photo is offensive, but I think all of those statues are
offensive because they're kitsch, as is the photo of the canyon that sold for
several million dollars.

Coincidentally Roger Scruton has been writing a (very, very poor) series of
articles on the BBC about Art with a capital A, and today he discusses kitsch:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-30439633

I think his historical claims are wrong, but he describes kitsch quite well.

He promises to reveal to us next time how to tell kitsch from Shinola, so that
should bring down photography prices pretty sharpish.

2014-12-15 Thread Bob W-PDML
As if the grammar error weren't enough, what are they thinking about, giving
away their children's rice wine as a prize?

Of course, some mistakes are worse than others. Have a look at this and don't
forget to read some of the See Alsos.

Or should that be Alsoes.

I think the former. But definitely not Also's.

Anyway,

Fantastic. When I die I'm going to spend all my money having a grandiose and

The angel is a bog-standard off-the-shelf funerary angel whose face is based on
classical faces. The sphinx is a nightmare. Whether it's Schoenhofen or not
isn't important, it's the anachronistic incongruity of a realistic 20th-century
face on an antique form that will put me back in therapy for another 10 years
or more.

Re: You Fuji owners may have firmware updates (and also be arrogant)

2014-12-19 Thread Bob W-PDML
I think his criticism is fair, and his comparison with tourism is appropriate
so it is not simply anti-royalist. He is saying that Harry is behaving like an
imperialist, which I think is true. He is able to behave like that, or at least
get attention, because he is royal - most tourists do not. Other photographers
are criticised for the same reasons.

As for enhancing the effectiveness of his work, you might think it justifies
it, but there are many people who do not. In large parts of the world these
sorts of charitable organisations - and I work for one of them - are seen as
patronising at best, arms of imperialism and western spies at worst. It is a
complex issue, not as clear-cut a case of good as you might at first think, and
NGOs are very aware of the pitfalls and issues - I think Harry has made a bit
of a mistake with this.

That's interesting and nicely done. A bit too busy for me, but that's not your
fault.

It would have been nice if you'd included the edge of the table, showing some
of the food and perhaps a knife or something breaking the edge. Still lifes of
this purpose were used not only to show off the patron's wealth and good taste,
but also to make a moral, allegorical point about the transitory nature of
wealth, power and earthly pleasure. To do this the painter often showed
something balancing precariously on the edge of the table, about to fall.

Two real masters of still life who are worth getting to know, if you don't know
them already, are Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin, and Lubin Baugin.

The latter features in a really, really beautiful film called Tous les Matins
du monde (All the mornings in the the world).

As if one wasn't enough, the film stars two Depardieus unfortunately, but in
this case the film easily outweighs Depardieu père and I recommend it highly.

Re: OT:Christmas Dinner

2014-12-26 Thread Bob W-PDML
Other things being more or less equal, it's a good idea to choose cork because
it helps to maintain a unique ecosystem and culture.

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2010/aug/22/cork-screw-cap-wine-environment

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/working_lunch/rob_on_the_road/2148738.stm

In a choice between two bottles of similar type and quality I don't mind paying
a little bit more for the one with the cork, not just because of the cork
industry, but also because of the ritual aspect of pulling the cork - it makes
the wine taste better!

Re: Gordon Parks Exhibition in Boston

2014-12-28 Thread Bob W-PDML
Fantastic photos, thanks. I love that Life / Magnum style of humanist
photography, and the composition of the individual shots, the b&w tonality etc.
are all wonderful. And it's very timely.

It would be nice to see them laid out on a page with text. One of the lost arts
is laying out a photo essay as a set on a double-page spread, making different
pictures work together so that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
I have a book of great Life photo essays, and the layouts are really important.

On the other hand, the paper prints don't have the ringing beauty of the
back-lit digital versions.

It captures well the bustle of Oxford Circus (world capital of pickpocketing),

I don't understand the concept of going out for breakfast, especially a quick
one. A couple of my friends say things like

"let's meet at such-and-such a place for breakfast", to which I reply

"maybe some other time", which is Bobspeak for

"are you completely out of your mind? I'm not going to get up, do my ablutions,
dress, stagger out into the cold and rain, schlep along to wherever the hell it
is and drink bad coffee while having to talk to someone when I can stay at
home, unwashed and undressed, barely moving, and drink good coffee and talk to
myself. Are you crazy or what?".

It's a really good gallery. I'm not going to pick any favourites in case ann

I don't normally like 'abstract' photography because a) it's never abstract and
b) it's normally just a case of 'can you tell what this extreme close-up is?',
for this gallery I'll make a rare exception.

She's more than a mistress, Paul. She's a wife, she's a mother, she's an errant

Like football, photography's about nothing unless it's about something. Just

Henri Cartier-Bresson was briefly a big-game hunter in West Africa before he
was a photographer, and often compared the two. You can see it in many of his

Re: Back up software

2015-01-24 Thread Bob W-PDML
I don't use a back-up program, in the sense of one that compresses everything,
I use SyncToy on a 64-bit W7 box, which copies the files but still has the
options for full, incremental etc. copying, which is more flexible than imaging
the disk, but slower. It's a bit of MS freeware. Very simple, does its job
well. You can test the back up by using the files in the destination just as
you would in the source, and if you have to redtore it's just a case of using
Synctoy in the other direction - no decrypting or decompressing or any crap
like that.
