Not a problem in the South. You just have to go through the window INTO a

Re: What's the advantage of DNG?

2010-11-23 Thread Jeffery Smith
One of the ironic mistakes that Sigma made was having RAW only dSLRs. That
ensured that the photographer had the maximum potential files, but because the
camera was ostensibly aimed at amateurs, it backfired badly as being perceived
as a crucial weakness of the camera. John Bean (UK) used to blow me away with
his Sigma dSLR images.

I agree that the RAW only was absolutely not their Achilles heel. Their optics

Robert White (England) used to sell Voigtlander stuff below the US prices, and
I bought quite a bit of stuff from him for a few years. I know that shipping
to/from US/AUS can be prohibitive, are there also VAT issues? I once thought
of buying an Epiphone guitar from Australia (a discontinued model), but the
shipping via air was prohibitive. And you can forget getting a bicycle shipped
from AUS to US.

I think it is like pearl (sort of a shiny matte, like Agfa paper from 30 years

Strange finding. They discovered a bacterium that uses arsenic in place of
phosphorus in its DNA. That is somewhat earth-shaking in the biology field, as
no other organism on earth has been able to substitute other elements in DNA.

Re: Enablement - Pentax ES

2011-01-23 Thread Jeffery Smith
Ah, I remember lusting after that camera in about 1970. One of my earlier
concerns with the Spotmatic I was using was that shutter speeds were in
1-f-stop detentes, and I was using Kodachrome (with not much latitude). The
mere idea of a stepless shutter that could give you 1/243 of a second seemed so
precise to me back then.

I even recall the 1970 hype on it. The ES was for electronic shutter, but one
author said that it should stand for "exposure simplicity".

And aside from the bokeh, the image shows good sharpness and contrast for being
wide open. For shooting productions on stage, the 77 FA is pretty much the only
lens I use if there are only two people on the stage. When the square dancing
starts, I have to go to 32 or 43.

Totally OT - WiFi question

2011-01-26 Thread Jeffery Smith
I just got switched from AT&T to Cox Internet service. They gave me a non-WiFi
modem, so I tried to connect it up with one of my three previous Wi-Fi routers
(Belkin, Apple, Cisco), and could get all three of the WiFi routers to work but
not one of them will attach me to the Internet (through wireless or through an
ethernet wire from the back). If I go directly from the back of the Cox modem
to my Mac, the internet comes up. For some reason, my WiFi routers cannot seem
to get the Internet signal from the modem. I tried 4 different ethernet wires
(between modem and router) just to make sure that wasn't the problem. And I did
make sure that the modem was connected to the right ethernet connection
(ingoing, not outgoing).

Is there something obvious that I'm missing here? All three routers do make a
connection with my computers, but no Internet signal is detected.

Jeffery

(BTW, I'm getting ready to teach a lab, so I won't be able to check back until
I get home tonight...hopefully one of you has had the same issue and knew how
to correct it).

Re: Totally OT - WiFi question

2011-01-27 Thread Jeffery Smith
It was an odd thing that seemed to fix it. I reset both router and modem about
10 times, in different orders, to no avail. The router was working, but would
not receive info from the modem. I finally just gave up and sat in the living
room with a laptop on my lap and starting watching TV. Five minutes later, my
blank internet screen had a popup that said "Do you want to connect to
*&%$@&^%&*" (some sort of jibberish). I wasn't about to choose "no", so I
clicked on OK. And CNN.com popped up on my laptop. Once my laptop started
working, I went to the desktop and it started working as well. Spooky, but
there was a delay during which nothing worked, and then it just seemed to wake
up.

2011-01-29 Thread Jeffery Smith
I give myself a haircut once a week (3/8"), on Saturdays. I haven't had a real
haircut since Katrina. I needed one badly in Houston, went to a "barber school"
and, for $8 got a haircut that was worse than Ross Perot's (did he live in
Houston?). I went straight to WalMart, bought some clippers, and have since
sported a Gunnery Sergeant Hartman haircut.

I think that some people think that the concept of the greenhouse effect and
global warming were somehow invented by Al Gore. This concept is not new. And
if you look at the greenhouse effect skeptics, they are also united in their
party affiliation. That would be fine if it were a political issue rather than
a scientific issue.

By the way, the same skeptics believe that evolution is a farce as well.

Re: The Online Photographer asks; "Is color printing easier now?"

2012-07-07 Thread Jeffery Smith
I did all of the printing for two editions of an Atlas of Parasitology while
still a graduate student at Tulane. It took some convincing for me to get the
two authors (old guys) to use Ektachrome instead of Kodachrome. At the time,
New Orleans had the best color lab in the USA (Primary Color), and getting
slides developed in an hour with no greenish hue did it.

My biggest challenge was getting the plastic print drums absolutely clean
between procedures. As I recall, it involved ammonia, detergent, my bathtub,
and a rinse in Orbit bath to get the drums totally clean.

Re: PAW - week 28 - Drought in New Orleans

2012-07-14 Thread Jeffery Smith
I'm sure that some of it is (that house is at the end of my block and was
abandoned after Katrina). Kudzu overwhelms my house within days, and spraying
Roundup weekly becomes routine. There are several types of vines that overwhelm
everything in New Orleans, and I recognize kudzu by the pea pods. When I bought
my 1850's era house in 1992, it was abandoned, and kudzu had overtaken and
destroyed the entire back wall of both stories, both through harboring moisture
and by giving a foothold to Formosan termites.

Thanks for the kind words.

Re: a weekend with the K30

2012-07-15 Thread Jeffery Smith
I'm sort of relieved that there isn't enough rationale to get one while already
having a K5. I doubted that Pentax would ever come out with a dSLR with a
sensor that is the size of a 35mm frame (I worded that just for Paul), but if
the Q is going down, I still have a glimmer of hope.

Re: K-5 pricing

2012-07-20 Thread Jeffery Smith
My advice is that anyone on this list who doesn't have a K-5 should get one at
this price. It is the flagship of the Pentax dSLR line and competes very well
with comparable dSLRs costing much more.

Replacement for Pentax K-5

2012-08-13 Thread Jeffery Smith
Now that it seems to be officially discontinued, will the replacement for the
Pentax K-5 be unearthed at Photokina? Any concrete ideas of what the
replacement will be? The prices of K-5 bodies are now below $900, so the
replacement will have to be pretty special to justify the additional cost.

Not to stray OT, but 43 seems extinct (with the future apparently entirely m43
for Olympus). I have an m43 Panasonic, and don't like it even with the optional
EVF. The new Sony 20mp no-VF Rollei-35 killer isn't catching the world by
storm. Who are the enthusiasts who love a high-end camera the size of a pack of
Camels? Is the dSLR market driven entirely by Facebook posters? Won't their
iPhone cameras suffice?

Not to vent here, but I'm thinking that I'd better pick up an Olympus E-5
simply because I'm already invested in fourthirds. And it makes me appreciate
more that Pentax will continue to make cameras that can be held with 6-8
fingers rather than just 4.

OT!: Olympus Four Thirds

2012-08-18 Thread Jeffery Smith
Sorry about the OT content, but Olympus is now announcing that they will have
new four thirds dSLR. I think this announcement is a reaction to the US Olympus
person implying that the 43 line might be dead, with m43 taking over that
market.

Re: PESO: Ugli Fungi

2012-08-19 Thread Jeffery Smith
Down here this has been the wettest summer in recent memory, though most of the
US has been drought-prone. It hasn't stopped raining all day today. This has
led to a population explosion of mushrooms (actually, poisonous toadstools, I
think) around the city. I've run into some "fairy rings" of them at Audubon
Park, but didn't have my camera(!).

Last week was even more annoying. James Carville jogged past me in the park,
and me without a camera.

Re: Sigma 70-300

2012-08-20 Thread Jeffery Smith
I have the 50/1.4. It is big and heavy, but is a very good fast normal lens.
The 30/1.4 is better in the center than the edges, but I rarely care about the
edges. Who shoots landscapes at f/1.4 anyway?

I don't have any "bad" Sigma lenses, but their build quality and reliability
are suspect, and they are way heavier than they need to be.

Introduction

2010-04-29 Thread Jeffery Smith
Greetings,

I'm a newbie on the forum. Have been using Pentax off an on since buying my
first Pentax Spotmatic back in 1968. Made a regrettable change to Nikon in the
mid-70s and found the bodies to be a bit more prone to breaking than my
Pentax). I now have both film type and digital Pentaxes, including a K-7 w/
31/1.8 that just arrived yesterday.

I hope to be an asset on this forum.

Re: K-7 replacement?

2010-04-29 Thread Jeffery Smith
I looked at the new Sony FF dSLR, and wasn't impressed by the specs in
light of the fact that its normal (50mm) lens is decidedly sub-par
compared to the competition. Another concern about FF dSLR is their
performance when coupled with lenses originally designed for digital use
(which may be optimized for the middle of the frame, but may be pretty
poor near the edges of a full frame). Finally, I'm more than happy
having my 300mm Pentax lens experiencing a crop factor that makes it
seem more like a 450mm lens. Sure beats lugging around a 40mm lens.

I do wish that Pentax had kept the *ist dSLR size instead of getting
bigger and bigger. The K-7 is really built like a tank, but it is more
of a chore to carry than the *ist with a 40mm pancake.

Tom C.

The problem I see, Tom, is that if Pentax do that, they cannot also
have a high-end APS-C body out at the same time. I've written this a
number of times, but I'll say it again: Pentax is not Nikon, who can
have a D300 and D700 out at the same time. If Pentax go FF, they'll
have a single FF body, and it will be the top of the line. Below it
will be 2 APS-C bodies: A K-x type entry level, and a K200D type mid
level. If there were a $1,000-$1,300 top-tier APS-C body, nobody would
buy the $2,000 FF body, or at least not in significant numbers to
break even..

How would this affect current Pentax users? Sure, a small number would
migrate to the FF body, but many like myself would be left without an
upgrade path. If Pentax don't release top-tier APS-C bodies, I will
probably leave the brand. Unless the FF body is K-7 sized and $1,500,
I probably won't consider it. I'm not alone in feeling like this
either.

With APS-C sensors reaching such good high-ISO performance levels, the
case for FF grows weaker with every new sensor released. "Using my
lenses at the FoV they were intended for" is not a reason to go FF as
far as I'm concerned, and certainly not as far as the camera companies
are concerned, because they want to sell *new* lenses.

The time to go FF for camera companies was either no later than 2
years ago (when the low light advantage was there without a doubt), or
3-5 years from now (when prices for FF sensors drop low enough that it
makes sense to stick them in almost every camera). But right now we're
in a no-man's land for FF: APS-C sensors are starting to perform
really well in low light (Pentax K-x, Canon 7D), they're also
delivering 14-17MP without problems and will likely reach 20MP soon,
not to mention the dynamic range advantage of FF is either gone or
disappearing. And APS-C does this at less than half the cost of a FF
sensor.

I really didn't want to get into a FF vs APS-C debate, because I've
found most people treat FF as a religion, which means reason is
persona non grata most of the time.

Please ignore my post and continue with your regularly scheduled pun thread :-)

Re: Introduction

2010-04-29 Thread Jeffery Smith
I actually did pick up some screw mount M42 lenses that I had yearned for as a
teenager (like the 50/1.4 with the rare earth element) and a few wides. I
picked up a Voigtlander (Cosina) screw mount body to use them. It sure doesn't
fare well compared to the old Spotmatic or K1000, but does have a pretty good
viewfinder.

I have read nothing but good about the 31/1.8 lens. I hope to put it through
its paces this weekend. I usually test drive a lens by taking a trip to the
zoo. Lots of unusual sights on both sides of the bars.

Does the group have a place where you post pictures, or do you mainly use your
own web sites or blogs?

And thank you all for the kind welcomes!

Jeffery

My concern with the Sony was the weak performance wide open, which is
sort of counterproductive for a fast lens. Dpreview is the only review
I have seen of it. They did feel that it was comparable to the others,
when stopped down. The problems with it seem to be exacerbated when
using a full frame digital"
>From Dpreview
"Having reviewed four other 50mm F1.4 lenses of similar design over
the past few months, we weren't expecting any major surprises from the
Sony version. And in broad terms it's not hugely different from its
Canon, Nikon and Pentax equivalents; as befits a quality prime it
gives excellent image quality when stopped down, but struggles
somewhat when used wide open, showing common problems such as corner
softness, halation, bokeh chromatic aberration, and vignetting on full
frame."

Re: Pentax K-x - What say you?

2010-04-30 Thread Jeffery Smith
Larry and Adam, thanks for the replies.

I'm very glad to hear about the low light capabilities. I have been using
rangefinders primarily for the past 10 years because lack of mirror flap and
fast lens availability made low light work possible (at least with film). I
have followed Fuji reviews for about 5 years because of their famed low noise
at low light levels, but didn't want to switch to the Nikon lens format. The
Pentax K-x is priced about the same as a digicam, and I have several fast
lenses (Sigma 30/1.4 and Pentax 50/1.4) that I could put to good use on the
K-x. The combination of the Sigma 30/1.4 and the K-x is sounding very good it
me right now for indoor work.

Thanks again,

Jeffery

I'm used to digressing threads, though I rarely witness a Mac versus Windows
battle any more. I use a Mac most of the time because I like the software
available for it. It also allows me to very quickly filter all posts with the
word "Mac" in them so I can drag and drop them to the trash can. I hope there

And cute kids photos can be more challenging than landscape. The subjects are
easier to find, but harder to photograph.

I'm happy to see that I'm not the only geezer here. I'll be hitting 60 in three

2010-05-01 Thread Jeffery Smith
Was there a camera store (Moldaner's) about 100 feet away from Camellia Grill?
That is the only photography shop left in New Orleans (the city of) since the
storm. It has since moved closer to Tulane University, replacing Maple Street
Camera (the second to last photography shop in the city).

I was hoping to drive down to the south shore line to see what has become of it
since the oil spill (which is now the size of Puerto Rico), but the sheriffs
down there don't want any pictures taken. A fellow biology professor tried two
days ago and they ran her out. They ran me out several years ago for trying to
photograph herons near an oil refinery in Venice. Rough times for photographers
since it is now so easy to post images on the web. Anyone with a camera is seen
as a threat.

South of New Orleans, human rights tend to be optional. The refineries don't
want any negative publicity, and since the sheriff is an elected position, they
do whatever the refineries ask.

Re: K-7 replacement?

2010-05-01 Thread Jeffery Smith
Mac has some software available for it that Windows cannot touch. That is one
of the reasons for my moving to Mac. And it boots up and connects to drives,
the web, etc. in about 45 seconds. My "fast" Dell takes about 15 minutes to get
past all of the "not responding" issues before it will actually function.

For people in the business world, Windows rules. For people who are writers,
academics, or otherwise right brained, the Mac fills some serious voids that
Windows doesn't even address. Like most of the software from Devon Technologies
and other information managers.

Jeffery

P.S. - can we change the subject line to Mac versus Windows? That poor K-7 has
been out of the mix for several days, and it deserves better. ;-)

Re: Please comment on my Diner Blog

2010-05-02 Thread Jeffery Smith
I've had a chance to peruse the Diner Blog this weekend. I very much like the
subject matter, and it is nice to be able to click on the images to get them
large on the monitor. My only suggestion (and this is very minor and pretty
much just my taste) might be to try a thin border around each photo to offset
it a bit from the background of the blog. A thin black line might do it. In PS,
that is pretty much just making the canvas size a bit bigger and making the
overlap black instead of white.

I was going to go out and shoot some of the old places on Airline Highway this
afternoon after church, but the President is in town to view the oil spill and
the freeways were blocked off. It would have been a good day for the shooting
as it is totally overcast (no harsh shadows). I look forward to seeing more of
the diners, especially the schlocky ones made from cabooses, etc.

Re: POTY - nature shot from Louisiana

People who own land on the bayou get a handful of coupons or tickets for
hunting alligator each year. They are actually tags that have to be tied onto
any alligators taken. The quota given out is enough to curb the alligator
population. The modus operandi (at least when I was in graduate school) is to
hang a dead chicken above the water on a cable with a giant hook. The next
morning, you go out on a flatboat to see who bit. Typically there is a large
gator hanging from the hook in his mouth. The boat goes next to them, and they
are "euthanized" with a single gunshot to the cranium.

K-x (navy) arrived

2010-05-05 Thread Jeffery Smith
My K-x just rolled in from BH. Very light, familiar controls, and the cheapo
zoom is not bad for -$150. I'll probably try it with the Tamron 17-35 for a
while. A bargain of a camera.

Re: Worth selling the K10D if I'm getting the K7?

2010-05-06 Thread Jeffery Smith
I'd hang on to it. As you say, the resale value is not enough to make you want
to lose it as a backup camera.

Re: Pentax: "...we don't want to be seen as the same as everyone else"

2010-05-06 Thread Jeffery Smith
Digital talk was verboten on the LUG for years. Then the M8 arrived, and film
camera talk has all but vanished. With the introduction of the M9, the M8 folks
are the wannabes.

And you were just talking about the cost of the bodies. Take a look at the
Leica lens prices these days. The cost of the Noctilux will make you plotz!
