I've tried the profiles from the US Epson website. Funny that those U.S. sites always have more material than their European counterparts. Still, no real improvement. Another extensive Google research indicates that this problem has been experienced by many people. Various sources suggest reducing the ink density in the Epson driver by approx. 10 percent. Seems to work. My prints are OK now. Still, a rather peculiar way of dealing with things which should be taken care of by using colour profiles in the first place. Ralf -- Ralf R. SESO: Zinneke Parade Brussels 2008
SESO...? Well, that's a slideshow ever so often. :-) Been to Brussels last saturday to watch the Zinneke Parade, a bi-annual event organised by an association to celebrate the cultural diversity of the Belgian capital's population. This year's motto was "water". Unlike the usual carnivals and techno parades we're having all over Europe nowadays, the Zinnike Parade has a special rule: no engines, no amplifiers. If you want a float then you'll have to push it and if you want music you'll have to sing, beat a drum or use whatever you have at hand as long as it doesn't involve elctronics. No 120 dBA mega-disco on wheels, here. My little show involves a few recent aquisitions: a Pentax DA 50-200 mm lens which was used for all pictures, a Zoom H2 WAV recorder, OKM ear-plug microphones, and SlideShowPro - a Lightroom plug-in used to create the whole slideshow. Now, does everything work with all browsers and systems? Feedback please. I'm also very interested in your opinions. No fishing for compliments here, so please be critical. http://www.fotoralf.de/zinneke/front.html Hope you'll enjoy watching as much as we did when we attended the parade. Un grand merci aux Bruxellois! It's been a wonderful day. Ralf -- Ralf R. K-r gets hot
Michael's K-r has been lying switched off on the table this afternoon and when he lifted it after a while the whole camera body was really hot and the battery was almost discharged. I admit I'm nore than a little alarmed and I'd rather not want to know what would have happened if this had occured while the camera was in its bag. Now, with a new battery it's working OK again and the other battery appears to be charging normally. Has anyone had a similar experience with this camera? Ralf -- Ralf R. Any probs remaining with K-3?
I'm thinking about buying a K-3 with the 18 - 135 mm lens and must admit I haven't paid much attention to all the K-3 discussions. But I think I remember threads about various probs like the famous mirror flapping bug. Has all this been dealt with, in the meantime, or are there any potential probs one should be aware of? A quick calculation has shown that buying a K-3 with the 18-135 as a kit and selling my K-5 at the current rate on ebay will get me the K-3 for a mere 440 euros over the price of the lens alone. The mere thought that we'll be back on winter time in a little over a week... Yikes... Everything appears to be fine, so far, no sticky trigger button and the rear thumbwheel works as it should. Most of the menues look familiar and so does the rest. I had also considered the Pentax 15 mm, not lastly because I prefer primes to zooms in general, but a look at the night photos available in the Pentax Gallery showed a strong flare tendency which makes it unusable for my purposes, just as bad as the old SMC-A 15 mm lens I had years ago. Difference M 2/35 mm, FA 2/35 mm, DA 2.4/35 mm
Hello all, I'm thinking about replacing my trusted M 2/35 mm through a AF lens. A look at Bojidar's website has taught me that the M has 7 elements in 7 groups while the FA and DA versions both have 6 elements in 5 groups where one is an aspherical element. Is there anyone who's ever been able to compare any two of all three of them? How similar are the FA and DA versions optically? I'm quite happy with the M's optical quality but my eyes aren't as good anymore as they used to be and focussing is getting a little difficult. Ralf -- Ralf R. Tele for K-3?
I'm still looking for a tele lens for my K-3. Seems like my trusted old Pentacon 4/300 mm has become heavier over the years and it's optical quality is no longer as good with the K-3's 24 MPix sensor as it was with my previous cameras. Looks like we're both getting old... Something around 300 mm would be nice but the 1000 euros for the DA 4/300 are a lot of money for a lens that I won't be using that often. Is the 50 - 300 mm sensibly better between 50 and 200 than the 50 - 200 kit lens and how good is it at the long end? Any other suggestions? Ralf -- Ralf R. The K-3: two months and a holiday later
It's two months now since I've got my K-3 together with the DA 18-135 mm lens and the Pentax flu-card. We're back from our two-weeks holiday in the North of France and here's a short report on things so far. On the way out, I've acquired the HD smc 55-300 mm, the smc DA 1.8/50 mm, and the smc DA 2.4/35 mm lenses at acfoto* in Aachen, Germany. Very nice and friendly staff and very well stocked with almost everything Pentax - including both 645s. The K-3 is far more of a progress over my former K-5 than I had expected. This goes for its picture quality as well as its handling. The autofocus has been substantially improved over that of the K-5, the shutter noise has been damped even further, and everything feels a little better and more responsive. The flu-card is great for having a closer look at photos just taken, on the iPad. Far better than the camera's display. Just a few pros and cons in no particular order: + the diopter control that used to be a real PITA is at last easy to operate + the autofocus is faster and more reliable, especially in low light - the switching between normal exposure and bracketing has become more complicated - bracketing in M-mode with chipped lenses still varies time *and* aperture unless you find the one setting deep down in the menu to stop this nonsense - no fault of the camera, but the larger files put such a burden on my trusted old Macbook Pro that it's getting painfully slow with the K-3 files in Lightroom. Way more than I had expected. I have already published first impressions and a few shots with the four new lenses, on this list. My trusted old M 2/35 mm, M 1.4/50mm, the 4.5/80-200 mm, the DA 50 - 200 mm lenses, and my hefty Pentacon 4/300 mm lens have all been retired because the new glass is at least as good or better. Altogether well over three kilograms of glassware. One more positive side effect: with all the newly bought DA lenses I'll be a lot less tempted by any new Pentax FF body. :-) Ralf *) www.acfoto.de -- Ralf R. In the early days of the PDML (don't even remember when I joined), there were very few internet forums. Now, there are dozens. They seem to have more appeal, not lastly because photos can be included right in the individual messages, which certainly is a plus for a photo forum. On the downside, the admins and moderators are back. I still remember the olden days when we had dial-up mailboxes run by owners and admins who thought they were God's gift to the online world and everybody had to be of their opinion or better leave. The same attitude is to be found in most forums nowadays. Some time ago, I joined one on a transport theme and unkowingly dared question a statement by someone I didn't know was the "owner" of the forum. My further contributions were immediately set to moderated and when I asked for the reason I received a long tirade about "cyber bullying, bickering and snyde remarks" and daring to bite the hand that fed me this wonderful forum. I'm way out of kindergarten age and had my account deleted at once. Another reason may be the fact that some mail and news cleint software has been made obsolete. I still miss MacSoup and the fact that I'm quite unhappy with Thunderbird also shows in the number of my contributions on here. For the same reason I've quit Usenet altogether. The PDML may not be as active as it used to be, but it still is a wonderful place and let's all hope it is here to stay for a long time. Ralf -- Ralf R.
