Yup.  You're correct.  Time for a pheromone baiting program and loads of
vacuuming.  Insects Limited specializes in these types of traps.  Based on your
trap catches, you may be able to isolate the source.

Hello all,    I believe this is a webbing
clothes moth, but I would appreciate confirmation from the experts. It is 6mm
long, and we are in Northern California. So far, we’ve only found this one

The sticky trap has Sciaridae, aphids and thrips - shouldn't cause any
problems as long as the bodies don't pile up.
The major issue will be the Christmas pedants pointing out that the picture
of the thrip is actually a picture of a thrips!

Re: [PestList] Pest ID help

2021-09-07 Thread Alan P Van Dyke
I'm not positive what species, but this looks like it could be something
similar to a pantry moth or Indian meal moth. I'm almost positive it's some
sort of Pyralidae. Hopefully one of the entomologists on the list will see
this and recognize it.

Fiona,

Pic 1 looks like a wasp beetle, possibly Clytus arietis. If so, it lays eggs
under the bark of recently fallen or dead trees. See
https://www.ukbeetles.co.uk/clytus-arietis. Apparently, they could end up in
products made from infested wood.

I am not positive, but I would say some sort of Latridiidae or minute brown
scavenger beetle. They feed on fungus, so their presence may indicate humidity
or moisture issues. However, they don't seem to cause any damage to collection
materials.

I'm by no means an official entomologist, but I feel fairly certain 28-1 is
a "ground beetle". Not normally seen as a threat to collection materials.

RE: [PestList] Pest ID Help

2020-07-29 Thread Catherine Malone
Hello All,

We have approx.. 60 blunder traps set up around our warehouse/storage facility
that we check and replace weekly. We just started the monitoring at the
beginning of June. My question is how many is too many when it comes to book
lice. Some areas we find 0-2 each week but in another general area we find 5-8
per week. Our RH in the area with the higher numbers is 53%. We’re working on
eliminating all cardboard housing for the art and we don’t have any obvious
issues with water (dry pipe sprinkler system, no floor drains).

When do we consider the numbers of captured insects high enough to be a
problem? And other than dropping the RH a few more degrees, is there any other
preventative measures we’re missing?

Thank you,

Catherine

RE: [PestList] Pest ID Help

2020-07-28 Thread Jo Bjorkman
Hi Chris, I’m not an expert but I believe they are springtails. We are about
an hour north of you and also finding them in our traps recently. They can be
moisture indicators, maybe check the RH% in the area you are finding them?

I recently trapped several of these specimens in one location. I don't recall
having seen these before. All around 1 mm in size.

[PestList] Pest ID Help

2020-05-18 Thread chris.niver
Sorry for the poor examples but all of them are kind of mangled to some
degree by the trap. All quite small, about 1 mm. Any help would be
appreciated.

Dear Tony,

Thank you so much for your assistance. I am relieved to know that they are
not harmful to the collection. We will move forward with sealing the
windows to ensure the bodies do not become a food source for other
'visitors'.

Hi Loes,

these beetles looks like from the family “Cerambycidae”. Maybe it is

Are there dead trees around, were you find them?

[pestlist] Pest ID help - bug with mystery white substance

2020-01-22 Thread gillian marcus
Hi Pest List,

I recently pulled a sticky trap with a strange creature in it - at first I
thought it was a book louse, but it has what appears to be a white powder or
other white substance all over it. It’s also a lot more bloated looking than
most book lice, so I’m unsure. I’ve attached a photo (although it’s not a great
one, apologies). Thank you so much for your help!

Best wishes,

Gillian Marcus

Hello Pest List,

We are located in Wisconsin and very cold, so I don’t believe pests are making
their way in from outdoors. We have a concrete building, and all of the wood
used to build out spaces was heat treated before being brought indoors, (with
the exception of a few reclaimed windows that somehow made it in without prior
treatment).
The images are not great, but I’m hoping good enough for identification. All
of the pests are very tiny, you will see a pencil tip for scale.

Re: [pestlist] pest id help

2020-01-15 Thread Alan P Van Dyke
The first image looks like a book louse to me, and the third may be a
minute brown scavenger beetle. The last I would think is a gnat of some
sort. These are all difficult to see.

Wow, that was fast. Looking at the google images, it does look like a click
beetle. Hopefully other experts can confirm.
Thank you very much!

The first three are indeed Drugstore Beetles (Stegobium). I suspect that
the fourth is a Rove Beetle (Staphylinidae), but difficult to be sure from

It is very common for plywood to have infestation of powder post beetles.
Especially plywood made overseas and imported. Certain laminations will support

Hi Megan
This looks very like the Four-spotted Yellowneck, *Oegoconia deauratella*,
- not a pest species. The larvae are associated with leaf litter or
decaying vegetation, and the adults fly to light, which is why this one is

Thanks Stephan!

I agree it does look like Attagenus smirnovi. We have fortunately just replaced
all of our wool and natural fiber carpeting after seeing some webbing Clothes
Moths, which were luckily neutralized before they became problematic. Hopefully
this will have taken away any food source for the carpet beetle as well, and
this was a last lingerer. I had not seen any before, but am keeping my eyes
open for them now. Especially considering the proximity to a storage room, and
an Exhibition.

would give it a shot to see if I can get some help on an insect ID. I attached
some pictures to this email of what I think may be a drug store beetle, and I
just wanted to get some more opinions both on the ID and the level of danger to
our collection (I have it in my list of possible dangerous insects) This was a
lone straggler, or so it appears right now since there is no other sightings
and no evidence of infestation.

RE: [pestlist] Pest ID Help

2018-08-10 Thread Kevin Ryan
Hi Tony,

Thanks for the feedback, and helping me to point me in the right direction. So
far there has just been one seen, but I am checking daily for new developments,
as it is right near a storage room that can be a little hard, but it is also
relatively close to one of our exhibitions. It was found on one of the glue
boards that I have in a wall cavity. I am trying to see if our pest control
provider can give us more precise information regarding its identification, but
they can be slow at identifying as they don’t understand the urgency for a
museum. Thanks again!

Kevin -
You can be reassured that this is not a drugstore beetle (Stegobium). However
it does look like one of the dermestids, which can be just as troublesome. From
the photos I can't decide whether it's a Trogoderma, Attagenus or perhaps
Anthrenocerus. (Not sure whether the last one has reached North America yet.)
I'm sure you can find someone in NY to have a look at it for you and tell you
exactly what it is - then we can suggest where it might be breeding. Of course
if it is the only one (and even pests accidentally enter clean buildings) then
hopefully you have no problem.
Best wishes
Tony
