[Phono-L] Amberola D-X flutter troubleshooting
Got a question. I have a Amberola D-X that has a flutter or water sound when playing. I have made it a new belt, it is clean lubricated and the motor runs strong. The only thing I have to suspect is the mandrel pulley. Do those swell or become deformed. The mandrel pulley is pot metal and appears to have flakes, I cleaned it but am wondering if it is out of round? If you watch the motor run the tensioner moves in and out more than I would expect leading me to believe something is out of round or a shaft is bent... Any advice? Hi Bill ~ Short of securing a dial or digital micrometer to the motor frame, you can devise a quick and dirty but effective way to check for out-of-round, by securing one end of a stretched out paper clip or stiff wire under an existing screw, and bending it so the other end nearly touches the edge of the pulley or other component you suspect of being out-of-round or on a bent shaft. Run the motor and carefully observe the distance (between the end of the wire and the pulley) opening up or closing in, or remaining steady. You can also position the wire so it points directly at the end of the pulley shaft, and then run the motor to check for a bent shaft. Positioning the wire at various points along the shaft (to the extent that the shaft is exposed), can also reveal exactly where such shaft deviates from true. Bill, I ran into a problem like that with my Edison Home. It turned out the governor had too much play. Also, lubricate the tensioner. That seems to be a part that gets neglected. If you find that the pulley is not out of round just replace the felt on the governor stop. Don't oil it. Use real wool F-1 or F-2 felt and not fabric store fake polyester felt. [Phono-L] How long do you leave Kotton Kleanser on.
I am about to clean up a cabinet with Kotton Kleanser and want to know how long should it be left on before wiping? Is it safe on the decals? Bill ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.oldcrank.org

Re: [Phono-L] How long do you leave Kotton Kleanser on.
I have used Kotton Kleanser for years and have had great luck with it in the art restoration field. I have used it on phonographs on many occasions. Go slow is the best advice I can give. On normal surfaces I leave it on for 5 minutes or so and than wipe down, but I repeat the process until no more dirt comes up. I than take a white scotch brite pad and do one more pass. On the decal areas I use the same method but I work around the decal with q tips until my last pass before the scotch brite pad. Than I carefully clean that area-DO NOT GO OVER THE DECAL WITH THE SCOTCH BRITE PAD.
