Re: [Phono-L] Rare phonogaph cabinet/storage
Nice find!!! I have three different styles of these cabinets. Only one is all correct with the paper mache horn and swinging tone arm. I can take some pictures for you if you want. I do have a form to make the horns and have made one already and sold it at the Union Phonograph show. They are a bit complex and very time consuming to make. I hope to make some more horns this winter. The model 740, which is similar, is pictured on the cover of Fabrizio and Paul's book Antique Phonograph Gadgets, Gizmos and Gimmicks. It is a rare bird indeed, the only thing is, the proprietary horn is not there. The 740 has a horn attached to the back of the grille which runs by means of a metal tube to the reproducer. Now since both cabinets are different, does anyone know if the 742 had the same proprietary horn? The first incarnation was for outside horn disc machines. Mr's Fabrizio and/or Paul, can you chime in please? John Robles Oh no I am gonna die - I just found out he got it here in my own town! Re: [Phono-L] Victor I elbow needed
Bob, I see this camera isn't much better. This is the pinned style elbow for the early version of the Victor I. There are pins on the flange that are used as stops for the Y hold down. The later ones had a stepped flange. It does need some good cleaning. Let me know if you are still interested. I've just acquired a machine with a plate that reads Type Vic III with serial number 8212 and am wondering if I have got a frankenphono or maybe a machine in transition. It has a slotted winding shaft but it is located to the rear of the case. I'm sure the crank has been fudged. It is tubular an tapered but the down part is not parallel to the side of the case and the wall thickness of the slot end is thicker than that of my Vic Type 6 crank (which fits the III perfectly, BTW). The escutcheon is just a flat plate with two screw holes and a rather large center hole that matches the case hole. I have not found a plugged hole to indicate that a new crank hole has been made either. There are no extra holes in the motorboard. The motor is a Victor motor. It has lead gov. weights. Cabinet size is in the right range. I thought that the reproducer was an early one but even that is in doubt. It had the flat end balance springs and the round needle chuck but the needle chuck has solder showing where it attaches to the rest of the needle bar. It could have been swapped from another reproducer although I don't know why the whole needle bar would not have been used. jamb nuts are the earlier round, grooved edge type rather than nuts. The horn seems to fit correctly, has a rivet and bayonets into the elbow. It is petaled and appears to be brass. Oh, and one last clue, the antiques dealer mentioned that the previous owner had lots of machines and many of them were sold at auction. She acquired it last May along with a Victrola IX which I did not inspect. What are the thoughts of our listmates on this one? Yes, the zoom change is quite annoying. You can contact the seller to ask for the pictures. I have done this in the past and is a way of verifying that it isn't a fraudulent listing. I always ask for a specific picture or two that aren't on the listing. If the seller replies with It is already boxed or another lame excuse, I don't even bother bidding. [Phono-L] Union Show
The Union show has come and gone. The crowds were a bit down year probably due to the weather. It was great to see everyone again. It is almost like a family reunion in a way. I have been attending this show since 1982 and this is the second year that I set up with another collector friend of mine to sell. I was able to part with some excess machines and parts and picked up a nice Rigid arm Victor MS. It had a badly damaged reproducer, beyond repair. I thought I was going to be in for a several year quest to find a replacement reproducer. Shortly after buying the MS, a dealer was unloading his van and had a Rigid arm E parts machine and an extra Rigid arm back bracket. Inside the case was a very nice original Rigid arm reproducer. A dealer I know was already checking out the items and had the reproducer in his hand. He looked at me and said You need to go for this, not me Thank you Craig! My quest to find a Rigid arm reproducer only lasted about two hours. I also found what was described to me as an oversize horn for a Victor Rigid arm M or MS. It is much larger than one used on a front mount machine. One collector has one on his Rigid arm MS. It uses a crane that mounts in the little bracket cover when you remove the front mount support arm. The horn is threaded on the small end and has a hanger ring. The other collector's horn like this still has the Victor decal on it. The one I bought doesn't. You just never know what might show up at Union! Let's hope the Donley's keep this show going for many more years. The recent uprising of a competing show the last few years is a bit disappointing. What the Donley's started 35 years ago has grown into a great event for all of us. They have invested heavily into making this event what it is. If someone wants to start another show, so be it. But, don't siphon off of this show. Pick another time of year and maybe even somewhere else. Sorry, but that's just my 2 cents worth. Ken Brekke ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.oldcrank.org

It is that time of year again. The Union phonograph show is just a couple of weeks away. If you have never been to this phonograph show, I would highly recommend attending. Some of the rarest phonographs, parts, and records are available at this show. Several of the best dealers and collectors make the annual pilgrimage to this Holy Grail of phonograph shows. Hopefully, someone might have some items that I am looking for.I am looking for the spring barrel end support stanchion for a pre-dog Victor MS motor. I am also looking for the small wood boxes that Victor Concert or Exhibition reproducers came in. One other part I might need to look for is a reproducer for a Victor rigid arm. [Phono-L] Another Stanton's update
As expected, the recent Stanton's auction was an exciting experience. There were many high end machines there that brought a wide variety of bidding excitement. The Edison Idelia was very impressive but brought only $20K when the presale expectations were much higher. The Edison Class M in the upright cabinet only went for a little over $10K. Music boxes were a bit soft on prices. The very nice Reginaphone went for around $4K. Many of the front mount Victors were in the $1,200 to a high of around $2,500 for the MS. If anyone has a chance to take in an auction at Stanton's, I would highly recommend it. I ended up with three more Victors for my collection along with a nice record cabinet, Edison Standard, Babson Brothers flowered cylinder horn, and many small items. One of the Victors was a Rigid Arm R. The arm has been resoldered where it attaches to the piece in the back bracket and the finish has been buffed off almost completely. The anodizing on the back bracket is weak but visible. My question is, Does anyone know anyone that restores the anodized finish on parts? Is it hard to do yourself? Thanks in advance for any advice. Congrats Any chance of posting pictures??? Ken B. -Original Message- From: phono-l-boun...@oldcrank.org [mailto:phono-l-boun...@oldcrank.org] On Behalf Of Andrew Baron Sent: Monday, October 19, 2009 6:46 PM To: Antique Phonograph List Subject: [Phono-L] Never thought it would happen to me From time to time, I've derived vicarious pleasure from reading of some of the phono-L members' coincidental discovery and acquisition of a particularly sought-after or scarce phonograph. In general, most of the membership are in areas that are either more populated, or nearer to denser metropolitan areas than here in Santa Fe, NM. Roll back the calendar a few decades, and my region is pretty sparsely populated, with more ranching than any kind of manufacturing or other work that would draw a larger population. Fewer people = fewer manufactured goods, including phonographs. Add to this the budget for a machine that most New Mexicans had (or prioritized for music) a century or so ago, and you have relatively few phonographs to begin with, and most of those in the low-to-middle cost range. Edison Standards, Victrola IV's, X's and XI's, and low- end Columbias are inevitably the models that turn up, and usually in none too good a condition if not out of a collection. Naturally some desirable machines were brought here later on, but by and large this hasn't amounted to anything significant, and there isn't much of a collecting community here. So opportunities to build a collection are rather limited. That being said, I started collecting in 1974, when I was 12, and my Victor 8-30X, Edison maroon Gem, Edison early A-250 and a Zonophone Grand Opera were all acquired here in Santa Fe, current population 72,000. Not exactly a small town, but outside of Albuquerque, we are geographically isolated from the big population centers. The Zonophone was brought here from New England in the '70s, when its past owner moved here. To the subject at hand: Two days ago, a big local consignment shop was having their annual Fall sale; everything 30% off. This event draws what seems like half of Santa Fe, and while my wife and I usually attend it, we generally wait until late in the day to avoid the pressing crowds. Anyway, most of what the shop sells is vintage furniture, rugs, artwork, etc., some of it quite nice, but rarely anything of particular interest to a phonograph collector, so no penalty for arriving when convenient. We had been browsing around for about a quarter of an hour when the proprietor let me know that there were a couple of Victrolas in the next room. We continued looking around in the part of the store where we currently were, and after about ten minutes more, I finally said that I'd like to take a look and see what the phonographs were. We headed casually across the distance, through the crowds of people and things toward the next room. No sooner had I uttered the words These machines are going to be examples of the most common models, and probably overpriced, than I could see the unmistakable silhouette of Victor XVII or XVIII, just sticking out beyond the wall separating the rooms. Quickening my pace (they were still 20 feet away), I prepared my mind to see a Victor XVII, the alternative possibility being somewhat beyond my powers of imagination. Still, a Victor XVII would be a great find although I already own one (courtesy of a very kind tip from a thoughtful phono-L member, $200, and a 125 mile round-trip to Albuquerque). Coming up alongside the curvy machine, I noticed first that the top curl of the rear corner post was mostly missing -- a clean break from bashing the machine into a wall or truck bed, no doubt. I also noticed the fine, expressive trim on the cabinet side and the chevron- shaped veneer pattern and practically leapt the last couple of feet so I could see the front of the machine, which left no doubt. There's something unbelievable about finding a top-end machine in New Mexico, and even though I have the XVII, and was already well aware of the differences, I had to see the VV-XVIII on the ID plate with my own eyes. The 3-digit serial number was also a strange thing to behold on a New Mexico Victrola. This was a dirty, dusty machine, with some of its edges and trim scraped up from careless handling, but at a glance, in generally good and very solid shape except for a few scrapes and that broken-off upper rear corner piece. Definitely not something out of someone's phonograph collection, and just as you like to find them -- clearly untouched for decades. A quick appraisal of what it had to offer revealed: Original gold V key; Gold needle cup, all original casters, all correct knobs, front and back; Large, gold crank escutcheon detached and screws missing, but still sitting on the crank about a half-inch out from the side of the cabinet; Near perfect felt on the platter; Almost certainly the original gold Exhibition soundbox, Ser. #87347B, never rebuilt; Very,

It didn't work at the auction but I was able to get it working after bringing it home. It sure is a mechanical marvel! The condition and originality of most of the machines were in question. Most of the Zonophone machines had reproduction parts on them. There were some bargains late in the auction when people were running out of funds and many people left after getting what they came for. Well, that's all I can add to the Stanton auction feedback. If anyone has an original wood tone arm for an extended arm front mount Victor M or MS please contact me. Ken Brekke
[Phono-L] Sonora question #1
Richard, I have one of these in a walnut case and can send pictures and measurements to you. I won't have time until the weekend to do it though. Do you have the drawer below to hold the extra reproducers? You can contact me at: k...@charter.net Ken Brekke -Original Message- From: phono-l-boun...@oldcrank.org [mailto:phono-l-boun...@oldcrank.org] On Behalf Of Richard Rubin Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2007 10:50 PM To: phono-l@oldcrank.org Subject: [Phono-L] Sonora question #1 I recently picked up a Sonora Elite with a wooden tone arm and lid support and am in the process of restoring it. The lid support is broken at the bottom (I can send a picture or two, if anyone wants to see them) and I'm going to need to reproduce it, which shouldn't be a problem, but I'm wondering: Should the hook at the bottom of the support (it's missing entirely on mine) face the front of the phonograph, or the back? Would it have been made of wood like the support, or was it a separate metal piece? If the lid is fully raised and resting open on the support, exactly how high should the opening be at the front of the phonograph? I welcome all opinions, and thank you in advance for them. ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.oldcrank.org
[Phono-L] What's so special about this Ebay listing
Take a look at this Ebay listing, 160091189694. Does anyone know what could be so special to get so much bid activity? What am I missing? Ebay is getting more curious every day. Ken
[Phono-L] Protected Bidding on ebay!
I agree with Jeff's thoughts on Ebay's new bidder ID protection policy. I have avoided bidding on Private listings on Ebay in the past. My feeling is that if there is something to hide then it's not worth taking the chance of being artificially bid up or the listing being fraudulent. Before I bid on an item I always research the seller and other bidders. I always ask the seller to send additional pictures of the item I am interested on. There have been some sellers that don't want to send more pictures or say that all the information I need is in the listing. Needless to say I don't bid on these seller's items. I am sure that we all have had some bad Ebay experiences. Too many times you can find bidders with no history of bidding on phonograph related items all of a sudden bidding again and again on an item. Also, you can sometimes tell if the bidder is located near the seller. With the new policy from Ebay of not revealing the bidder's ID, it will be harder to detect scams. With every new policy that Ebay comes up with it doesn't take long for the professional scammers to find a way around it. This new policy, in my mind, has good intentions. But, I think it will also discourage bidders. Maybe the best way to bid on items is to just put in one bid and not look back at it until it closes and avoid the frustration. It all boils down to what you are willing to pay for an item and whether or not someone else thinks it is worth more. If a shill bidder is the high bidder at the end of the sale then you can be sure that the seller will be relisting it at some time. I am always worried that the bidding is sham bidding in these auctions, artificially raising the price? I actually look for bidders whom I have bid against in the past. This lends towards legitimacy, but also confirms what I am bidding on, others that collect the same thing are also interested. Has anyone bid, or won anything with these bidder identification protected auctions? The seller of the Zonophone-A is doing that with that particular auction.
