Re: [Phono-L] Rare phonogaph cabinet/storage

2013-08-17 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
Nice find!!! I have three different styles of these cabinets. Only one is
all correct with the paper mache horn and swinging tone arm. I can take
some pictures for you if you want. I do have a form to make the horns and
have made one already and sold it at the Union Phonograph show. They are a
bit complex and very time consuming to make. I hope to make some more horns
this winter.

Subject: [Phono-L] Rare phonogaph cabinet/storage

Hi
I have a question - A friend of mine found a rare Herzog 742cabinet that
fits a cylinder phonograph inside it, and has cylinder drawers below. The
model 740, which is similar, is pictured on the cover of Fabrizio and Paul's
book Antique Phonograph Gadgets, Gizmos and Gimmicks.  It is a rare bird
indeed, the only thing is, the proprietary horn is not there. The 740 has a
horn attached to the back of the grille which runs by means of a metal tube
to the reproducer. Now since both cabinets are different, does anyone know
if the 742 had the same proprietary horn? The first incarnation was for
outside horn disc machines.
Mr's Fabrizio and/or Paul, can you chime in please?
John Robles
Oh no I am gonna die - I just found out he got it here in my own town!

Re: [Phono-L] Victor I elbow needed

2013-07-26 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
Bob,
I see this camera isn't much better. This is the pinned style elbow for the
early version of the Victor I. There are pins on the flange that are used
as stops for the Y hold down. The later ones had a stepped flange. It does
need some good cleaning.
Let me know if you are still interested.

Ken:

Wonderful!

My Victor I uses the clamp down type of elbow and not the slip in.
It clamps down with the thumb screw and the prong / fork clamp. Not the
right words but, I think it helps.

If it is the correct type, the arrangements are fine.

Hope that helps. I am looking forward to the pics.

again, thanks

Bob,
Did you find an original Victor I elbow yet? I thought I sold mine at the
Union show but I checked my display box and still have it. It is the
correct pinned style for the early beveled turntable I. I also have a
Victor I tone arm. I am asking 150 for the elbow and will include shipping
and insurance. I can send pictures in a couple of days as our camera died
and will have to get another one.

Subject: [Phono-L] early Vic III ?

I've just acquired a machine with a plate that reads Type Vic III with
serial number 8212 and am wondering if I have got a frankenphono or maybe a
machine in transition. It has a slotted winding shaft but it is located to
the rear of the case. I'm sure the crank has been fudged. It is tubular
an tapered but the down part is not parallel to the side of the case and
the wall thickness of the slot end is thicker than that of my Vic Type 6
crank (which fits the III perfectly, BTW). The escutcheon is just a flat
plate with two screw holes and a rather large center hole that matches the
case hole. I have not found a plugged hole to indicate that a new crank
hole has been made either. There are no extra holes in the motorboard.
The motor is a Victor motor. It has lead gov. weights. Cabinet size is in
the right range. I thought that the reproducer was an early one but even
that is in doubt. It had the flat end balance springs and the round needle
chuck but the needle chuck has solder showing where it attaches to the rest
of the needle bar. It could have been swapped from another reproducer
although I don't know why the whole needle bar would not have been used.
jamb nuts are the earlier round, grooved edge type rather than nuts. The
horn seems to fit correctly, has a rivet and bayonets into the elbow. It is
petaled and appears to be brass. Oh, and one last clue, the antiques
dealer mentioned that the previous owner had lots of machines and many of
them were sold at auction. She acquired it last May along with a Victrola
IX which I did not inspect.

What are the thoughts of our listmates on this one?

smoke. Has anyone had any luck getting the smell out from an old phonograph

anyone have any sales literature on these cabinets? I would like to try to

Yes, the zoom change is quite annoying. You can contact the seller to ask
for the pictures. I have done this in the past and is a way of verifying
that it isn't a fraudulent listing. I always ask for a specific picture or
two that aren't on the listing. If the seller replies with It is already
boxed or another lame excuse, I don't even bother bidding. If I get the
exact pictures requested then I can be pretty sure that they actually have
the item.

If you click on the large picture while it is zoom mode, it will open up the
old larger format.

Good luck This is a great machine.

[Phono-L] My Dearborn trip

2011-07-04 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
Thanks for all the replies related to what to see at Greenfield Village. I
never thought this question would spark such a spirited debate. I just
wanted to make the most of our Model A Ford trip to Dearborn. It should be
a great trip and hopefully we'll find some treasures along the way.

Seeing the countryside at 40 mph in our trusty ol' Ford. Now let's not
start a debate thread on how fast a Model A should be able to go. I just
prefer to take it easy on all the backroads.

[Phono-L] Dearborn trip

2011-07-03 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
We will be taking a sort of “Pilgrimage” in our Model A Ford to Dearborn
Michigan in August. This will be a sort of crescendo of both of my hobby
interests to visit the Ford Museum and also Greenfield Village and the
Edison exhibits. In our travels, we will be staying in Ludington, Saginaw,
Romulus, and Grand Rapids. My question to anyone on this list from Michigan
is “Are there any phonograph related sites to see in these towns?” If we
have time, I would like to check them out. If anyone has had the
opportunity to visit Greenfield Village, what would you recommend to look
for and not miss? We will have about 3 ½ days onsite and don’t want to miss
anything.

[Phono-L] Diamond Disk stylus repair

2011-03-19 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
Does anyone on this list know the specifications for the diamond point for
the Edison diamond disk reproducers? Is this something that a jeweler could

just wondering if a repair could be done at a local jeweler.

Curt,
Thanks for the response. I saw those kind of prices out there. I was
considering checking with a local jeweler if I could find the specifications
of the actual diamond point. The repair cost seems rather high in
comparison of the whole reproducer.

A new one is $80 to $100 on a new stylus bar, last time I checked - might
have gone up a little since then. You can probably get one from Ron Sitko.
If a jeweler could set one it would probably cost that much or more and if
your diamond fell out and you have it, it may have been damaged...

[Phono-L] Victor R

2011-01-07 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
Jeff,

The orange based stripper works well. Just try it in a small area under the
turntable first. It's good to hear that there are still some good finds out
there.

The tone arm on my Victor Rigid arm R has been buffed by a previous owner
that took off most of the nice oxidized finish. The finish behind the swing
arm and on the reproducer is fine. My question for everyone on Phono-L is:
Is it hard to redo the oxidized finish on a part like this? Or, is there
someone that can be recommended to do this type of work?

Thanks,

[Phono-L] Union Show

2010-06-14 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
The Union show has come and gone. The crowds were a bit down year probably
due to the weather. It was great to see everyone again. It is almost like
a family reunion in a way. I have been attending this show since 1982 and
this is the second year that I set up with another collector friend of mine
to sell. I was able to part with some excess machines and parts and picked
up a nice Rigid arm Victor MS. It had a badly damaged reproducer, beyond
repair. I thought I was going to be in for a several year quest to find a
replacement reproducer. Shortly after buying the MS, a dealer was unloading
his van and had a Rigid arm E parts machine and an extra Rigid arm back
bracket. Inside the case was a very nice original Rigid arm reproducer. A
dealer I know was already checking out the items and had the reproducer in
his hand. He looked at me and said You need to go for this, not me Thank
you Craig! My quest to find a Rigid arm reproducer only lasted about
two hours. I also found what was described to me as an oversize horn for a
Victor Rigid arm M or MS. It is much larger than one used on a front mount
machine. One collector has one on his Rigid arm MS. It uses a crane that
mounts in the little bracket cover when you remove the front mount support
arm. The horn is threaded on the small end and has a hanger ring. The
other collector's horn like this still has the Victor decal on it. The one
I bought doesn't. You just never know what might show up at Union!

Let's hope the Donley's keep this show going for many more years. The
recent uprising of a competing show the last few years is a bit
disappointing. What the Donley's started 35 years ago has grown into a
great event for all of us. They have invested heavily into making this
event what it is. If someone wants to start another show, so be it. But,
don't siphon off of this show. Pick another time of year and maybe even
somewhere else. Sorry, but that's just my 2 cents worth.

Hopefully, someone might have some items that I am looking for.I am
looking for the spring barrel end support stanchion for a pre-dog Victor MS

[Phono-L] Another Stanton's update

2010-04-30 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
As expected, the recent Stanton's auction was an exciting experience.
There were many high end machines there that brought a wide variety of
bidding excitement. The Edison Idelia was very impressive but brought only
$20K when the presale expectations were much higher. The Edison Class M in
the upright cabinet only went for a little over $10K. Music boxes were a
bit soft on prices. The very nice Reginaphone went for around $4K. Many of
the front mount Victors were in the $1,200 to a high of around $2,500 for
the MS. If anyone has a chance to take in an auction at Stanton's, I would
highly recommend it.

I ended up with three more Victors for my collection along with a nice
record cabinet, Edison Standard, Babson Brothers flowered cylinder horn, and
many small items. One of the Victors was a Rigid Arm R. The arm has been
resoldered where it attaches to the piece in the back bracket and the finish
has been buffed off almost completely. The anodizing on the back bracket is
weak but visible. My question is, Does anyone know anyone that restores the
anodized finish on parts? Is it hard to do yourself? Thanks in advance for
any advice.

From time to time, I've derived vicarious pleasure from reading of some of
the phono-L members' coincidental discovery and acquisition of a
particularly sought-after or scarce phonograph.

In general, most of the membership are in areas that are either more
populated, or nearer to denser metropolitan areas than here in Santa Fe, NM.
Roll back the calendar a few decades, and my region is pretty sparsely
populated, with more ranching than any kind of manufacturing or other work
that would draw a larger population.

Fewer people = fewer manufactured goods, including phonographs. Add to this
the budget for a machine that most New Mexicans had (or prioritized for
music) a century or so ago, and you have relatively few phonographs to begin
with, and most of those in the low-to-middle cost range. Edison Standards,
Victrola IV's, X's and XI's, and low- end Columbias are inevitably the
models that turn up, and usually in none too good a condition if not out of
a collection. Naturally some desirable machines were brought here later on,
but by and large this hasn't amounted to anything significant, and there
isn't much of a collecting community here.

So opportunities to build a collection are rather limited. That being said,
I started collecting in 1974, when I was 12, and my Victor 8-30X, Edison
maroon Gem, Edison early A-250 and a Zonophone Grand
Opera were all acquired here in Santa Fe, current population 72,000.
Not exactly a small town, but outside of Albuquerque, we are geographically
isolated from the big population centers. The Zonophone was brought here
from New England in the '70s, when its past owner moved here.

To the subject at hand:
Two days ago, a big local consignment shop was having their annual Fall
sale; everything 30% off. This event draws what seems like half of Santa
Fe, and while my wife and I usually attend it, we generally wait until late
in the day to avoid the pressing crowds. Anyway, most of what the shop
sells is vintage furniture, rugs, artwork, etc., some of it quite nice, but
rarely anything of particular interest to a phonograph collector, so no
penalty for arriving when convenient.

We had been browsing around for about a quarter of an hour when the
proprietor let me know that there were a couple of Victrolas in the next
room. We continued looking around in the part of the store where we
currently were, and after about ten minutes more, I finally said that I'd
like to take a look and see what the phonographs were. We headed casually
across the distance, through the crowds of people and things toward the next
room. No sooner had I uttered the words These machines are going to be
examples of the most common models, and probably overpriced, than I could
see the unmistakable silhouette of Victor XVII or XVIII, just sticking out
beyond the wall separating the rooms.

Quickening my pace (they were still 20 feet away), I prepared my mind to see
a Victor XVII, the alternative possibility being somewhat beyond my powers
of imagination. Still, a Victor XVII would be a great find although I
already own one (courtesy of a very kind tip from a thoughtful phono-L
member, $200, and a 125 mile round-trip to Albuquerque).

Coming up alongside the curvy machine, I noticed first that the top curl of
the rear corner post was mostly missing -- a clean break from bashing the
machine into a wall or truck bed, no doubt. I also noticed the fine,
expressive trim on the cabinet side and the chevron- shaped veneer pattern
and practically leapt the last couple of feet so I could see the front of
the machine, which left no doubt.

There's something unbelievable about finding a top-end machine in New
Mexico, and even though I have the XVII, and was already well aware of the
differences, I had to see the VV-XVIII on the ID plate with my own eyes.
The 3-digit serial number was also a strange thing to behold on a New Mexico
Victrola. This was a dirty, dusty machine, with some of its edges and trim
scraped up from careless handling, but at a glance, in generally good and
very solid shape except for a few scrapes and that broken-off upper rear
corner piece. Definitely not something out of someone's phonograph
collection, and just as you like to find them
-- clearly untouched for decades.

A quick appraisal of what it had to offer revealed:
Original gold V key;
Gold needle cup, all original casters, all correct knobs, front and back;
Large, gold crank escutcheon detached and screws missing, but still sitting
on the crank about a half-inch out from the side of the cabinet; Near
perfect felt on the platter; Almost certainly the original gold Exhibition
soundbox, Ser. #87347B, never rebuilt; Very,

ask the members of this list for help again. I recently bought a very nice
Edison Spring Motor phonograph without a lid. If anyone has one or knows of
one available, please contact me off list at kbab1 at charter.net

[Phono-L] Price for a Columbia AB McDonald

2008-07-13 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
Bruce,
If it is any comparison, I paid about $1,500 at Union for a complete mint
one with the correct mandrels and aluminum horn about three years ago from
one of Jasper Sanfellipo's friends. An original large mandrel is very tough
to find as are the aluminum horns.

I have a chance to buy a Columbia AB (MacDonald) Graphophone in excellent
condition. It does not have the large slip on Mandrel to play the Concert
Cylinders, but everything else is there, and cabinet is in beautiful shape,
and it is in running condition. Serial Number is early in the run 752110.
There is a strange little 10 by 4 wide black horn that comes with it which
I think is probably off market. What sort of price would you estimate this
AB (MacDonald) would be fair?? I looked on ebay and none have sold in the
past month or so.

Thanks in advance,

Bruce

[Phono-L] Another Ebay suggestion

2008-07-07 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
With all the fraudulent listings out there, I always ask the seller for more
detailed pictures on substantial items I am interested in. If I receive
exactly the pictures I ask for then I feel more comfortable proceeding with
a possible sale. There have been a number of Ebay sellers that either say
the item is already boxed and I have to refer to the listing for pictures or
I don't receive a reply from my request for more pictures. I have also
asked for a phone number to call for more information. This has also
worked.

[Phono-L] Union??

2008-06-23 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
I have to say, the Union show was pretty good this year. There were some
high end machines there to drool over like a Douglas Victor D, class M
electric, Edison Schoolhouse, Homes under glass, a Victor number 10
reproducer, etc...

I was very surprised to be able to knock off two of my Union Wish List
items. I was offered and ended up buying a very nice Victor A and a very
nice Victor Dolphin case B. I also found a New Century Eldridge Johnson
reproducer, a nice horn for a Johnson M, and a few other smaller items. It
was a great show and even greater time seeing all the other
collectors/dealers from around the country. Maybe next year I can afford to
go after an Edison under glass.

[Phono-L] Union wish list

2008-05-30 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
Well, the annual pilgrimage to the Union phonograph show is coming up quick.
I would like to put out my Wish List for anyone bringing items to sell. I
am looking for a Victor A or B, An Edison under glass cabinet and machine,
any Rigid arm Victor, any volume controls for Victor or Edison reproducers,
an extended wooden tone arm for a Victor M or MS, and an original Triumph
cygnet horn crane. I know my list is a long shot but it's worth a try.
Please contact me off list at kbab1 at charter.net if you might be bringing any
of the items for sale or trade. If anyone else has a Wish List please
email us all and see what happens. Thanks in advance, Ken Brekke

while since I found a bargain.

[Phono-L] new toy and parts search

2008-05-01 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
Hello to all. I was working in a small town today and took a few minutes of
my lunch hour and visited an antique shop. I found an Edison Model D
Triumph with an eleven panel cygnet horn and O reproducer. I couldn't
believe it when the price mentioned to me was only $425. I guess there are
still a few bargains out there. Anyway, it is missing the crane but
otherwise in nice condition. Does anyone have an extra original crane to
sell or trade? Also, has anyone had any luck getting the old mouse nest
smell out of the case? The case on this one was completely full of mouse
nest stuff and smell. Thanks in advance for any help. Ken B.

[Phono-L] Wurlitzer P-12

2008-03-26 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
I want to thank everyone for the advice regarding my new toy, a 1934
Wurlitzer P-12. I was referred to a website where I was able to purchase a
74 page service manual.

There were also some referrals to help locate parts if I need them. This
forum is greatly appreciated. Everyone is very helpful. I hope to tear
into the Wurlitzer after the service manual gets here.

Thanks again,

It is interesting that he asks for a buy it now of $1500. shipping included,

yet he did not list a buy it now on ebay. That would mean you would not
have any fraud protection if you transacted off ebay. Certainly a BY with a

wood horn should go for substantially more than $1500, but who knows. The
market is really bad. I recently. sold two nice Vic 5s for 1200. each and I

tried for a year to sell them, with no offers.

[Phono-L] OT-vintage car

2007-06-24 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
I also am into old Model A Fords. I have a 1930 Deluxe Rumble Seat Coupe, a
1931 Deluxe Tudor, and an all original un-restored 1930 Fordor Town Sedan.
I drove the Tudor to the Union Show this year putting around 460 miles on
it. I am doing a total restoration on the Coupe. This one I have had for
almost 18 years and have put on about 40,000 miles on it. I will probably
drive the Coupe next year to Union. Someday, my dream is to have a 1931
Model A Ford Tudor Delivery vehicle. Of course it will be advertising
Victor phonographs on the side panels and even have some inside in crates.
This would be the crescendo of both hobbies. I know for the purists out
there that 1931 is to late for having new phonographs in the crate yet but
it would be fun anyway.

[Phono-L] Stanton Auction

2007-04-19 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
I was fortunate enough to attend the recent Stanton auction. I agree that
the Heavy Hitters were in attendance and some items brought some very high
bids. I was able to bring home the mahogany Regina Hexaphone, some Victor
horns including one for my front mount M with the extension arm support, a
couple of Nipper radiator ornaments for my Model A Fords, a Columbia Q
(working with an original horn) for $180, and some miscellaneous parts. The
10% buyer's premium along with the 6% Michigan sales tax almost made me stay
away. The sales tax is on the buyer's premium also for a total of 16.6% for
us regular/non-dealer collectors. This really adds up fast. It is sad that
more and more auction houses are going to this extra money grab mode of
operation. Doesn't the seller already pay a commission and expenses?

Anyway, enough venting. Some prices I took note of are as follows. Please
keep in mind this is the hammer price and the additional fees are not
included yet. You do the math.

Victor Z 1,300; Columbia BKT 900; Standard A rear mount 550; Victor P
1,100; Columbia AP 550; Canadian Berliner Type B 2,000; First style
Columbia AJ  1,100;

Zonophone Concert rear mount 1,800; Zonophone C 1,850; Victor Junior
1,900; Columbia BO 1,600; Columbia BH 700; Victor R 1,050; Victor Red
Seal Poster with Opera Singers 3,700; Victor E front mount 950; Zonophone
D 2,500; Zonophone Home 1,650; Victor rear mount M 1,400; Victor VI
7,000; Victor Rigid Arm E (homemade elbow, arm, and wrong reproducer) 2,200;
Edison Triumph w/11 panel horn 1,100; Victor XXV 3,500; Victor II 1,300;
Kalamazoo Duplex 6,000; Edison Standard with wood grained cygnet horn-NICE
2,200; Edison Opera (concert on the ID tag) mahogany 11,000; Vita phone
2,000; Berliner Trademark 4,200; Victor MS with wood horn 4,650; victor V
with wood horn 3,000; Victor Special K 2,200, early Edison Home 4-latch
1,200;  Edison Triumph with wood horn 1,750; Victor O early one 1,400;
Victor III with wood horn 2,000; Edison Bijou sign 3,750; Columbia BGT
3,250; Zonophone A 4,500; Edison Ideal-missing the horn, crane, and crank
18,000; a very early Edison Home with the indented brass manderal 11,000;
plus many other machines that I didn't take note of after my bid on the
Hexaphone. I guess according to some more veteran collectors, this
Hexaphone in mahogany might be only one of maybe three known. The rest are
always in oak. It didn't work at the auction but I was able to get it
working after bringing it home. It sure is a mechanical marvel!

The condition and originality of most of the machines were in question.
Most of the Zonophone machines had reproduction parts on them. There were
some bargains late in the auction when people were running out of funds and
many people left after getting what they came for.

Well, that's all I can add to the Stanton auction feedback. If anyone has
an original wood tone arm for an extended arm front mount Victor M or MS
please contact me.

I recently picked up a Sonora Elite with a wooden tone arm and lid support
and am in the process of restoring it. The lid support is broken at the
bottom (I can send a picture or two, if anyone wants to see them) and I'm
going to need to reproduce it, which shouldn't be a problem, but I'm
wondering: Should the hook at the bottom of the support (it's missing
entirely on mine) face the front of the phonograph, or the back? Would it
have been made of wood like the support, or was it a separate metal piece?
If the lid is fully raised and resting open on the support, exactly how high

should the opening be at the front of the phonograph? I welcome all
opinions, and thank you in advance for them.

[Phono-L] Protected Bidding on ebay!

2007-01-16 Thread Ken and Brenda Brekke
I agree with Jeff's thoughts on Ebay's new bidder ID protection policy. I
have avoided bidding on Private listings on Ebay in the past. My feeling
is that if there is something to hide then it's not worth taking the chance
of being artificially bid up or the listing being fraudulent. Before I bid
on an item I always research the seller and other bidders. I always ask the
seller to send additional pictures of the item I am interested on. There
have been some sellers that don't want to send more pictures or say that all
the information I need is in the listing. Needless to say I don't bid on
these seller's items. I am sure that we all have had some bad Ebay
experiences. Too many times you can find bidders with no history of bidding
on phonograph related items all of a sudden bidding again and again on an
item. Also, you can sometimes tell if the bidder is located near the
seller. With the new policy from Ebay of not revealing the bidder's ID, it
will be harder to detect scams. With every new policy that Ebay comes up
with it doesn't take long for the professional scammers to find a way around
it. This new policy, in my mind, has good intentions. But, I think it will
also discourage bidders. Maybe the best way to bid on items is to just put
in one bid and not look back at it until it closes and avoid the
frustration. It all boils down to what you are willing to pay for an item
and whether or not someone else thinks it is worth more. If a shill bidder
is the high bidder at the end of the sale then you can be sure that the
seller will be relisting it at some time.

Any experiences or comments on bidder identification protection on
ebay?! I am always worried that the bidding is sham bidding in these
auctions, artificially raising the price? I actually look for bidders
whom I have bid against in the past. This lends towards legitimacy, but
also confirms what I am bidding on, others that collect the same thing
are also interested.

Has anyone bid, or won anything with these bidder identification
protected auctions? The seller of the Zonophone-A is doing that with
