[Phono-L] Any information about Columbia building no. 77?

2016-09-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen via Phono-L
I've just posted some blueprints for a proposed Columbia record factory
building in Bridgeport, CT, labeled "Building No. 77." You can see the
blueprints here:

http://spgo.io/f/a/xkNalUn5lg6W2y-U-rklkQ~~/AABF2wA~/RgRZyD8ZP0EIAWvyi-ACpbpXA3NwY1gEAFkGc2hhcmVkYQhzdGFuZGFyZGANNTIuMzguMTkxLjIyNEIKAAWZC-dXmwyK0lIYYXJjaGl2ZUBtYWlsLWFyY2hpdmUuY29tCVEEAERDaHR0cDovL3d3dy5saXR0bGV3b25kZXJyZWNvcmRzLmNvbS9Db2x1bWJpYS1mYWN0b3J5LWJsdWVwcmludHMuaHRtbEcCe30~

Does anyone know whether this building was ever built and, if it was, in
what year?

Thanks!

[Phono-L] Take numbers on electric Columbias

2015-11-06 Thread Merle Sprinzen via Phono-L
I'm a little embarrassed that I don't know this, but not too embarrassed to
ask.

In looking at the records that were included in the set of four Bubble Books
that were recorded electrically, I'm seeing the matrix number in the wax
along with a set of numbers, of the form "number dash number," like "4-2" or
"3-1." This undoubtedly is telling me the take number, but I don't know
how to read it. Would someone let me know to decipher the code, please?

Thanks ever so much,

Merle

[Phono-L] Favor please: Brake on a Lumiere

2014-04-13 Thread Merle Sprinzen
Hi Everyone --

I have one of these phonographs that somehow lost its automatic braking
mechanism. In order to find one, I need to know what it looks like and so
I'm hoping someone has one of these machines and would be willing to lift
the turntable and take a photo of the brake with a ruler beside it for
scale. I would be most grateful.

You can see images of this kind of phonograph at the top of this page:

[Phono-L] Anyone know a dealer interested in selling Little Wonder records?

2013-07-08 Thread Merle Sprinzen
I was approached by someone who came into a big collection of Little Wonder
records -- more than 1500 records (more than 700 titles - there are
duplicates). He has 20-30 or so in that collection that I'm interested in
but he isn't really interested in letting me choose -- it's all or nothing
and the "all" price is more than I'm willing to pay to just get the ones I
want. So I'm thinking that I could buy them all, take out the ones I want,
and then sell the rest to a dealer at a much reduced price (less than 50
cents a record) given that I was willing to pay a lot for the ones I wanted.
All I need is to find a dealer interested in that deal. Do you know anyone?
If so, please send me their contact details -- off list please. And thanks!

[Phono-L] Phonos for sale in advance of Union

2012-05-21 Thread Merle Sprinzen
I've got a small bunch of phonos I'd like to sell - all in the "small"
category - and thought I'd see if anyone is interested. I'm happy to bring
them to Union.

1. Vanophone - In very good working order. The reproducer is not original,
though, and it doesn't attach to the tone arm very securely. $295

2. A Kompact - In very good working order. It's the one with a wooden case
and the turntable that's all one piece rather than the one in three parts
that fan out. I believe the case has been refinished and for sure the
handle has been replaced. $195

3. A Pollyphone - The one with a cardboard horn that folds flat (missing).
The handle has been replaced. I'd say this one is really only good for
parts. $50.

I can send photos of any of these if you're interested - hope you are!

I am sure that we all have bought some old phonographs that came from heavy
smokers. I recently purchased a nice oak Herzog cabinet like the one on the
front of the Gadgets and Gizzmos book with the paper mache horn inside. It
is in excellent condition with the exception that it has a strong odor of
smoke. Has anyone had any luck getting the smell out from an old phonograph
or cabinet? This cabinet came from the original owners grand-daughter who
is in her late 70s. Both her and her husband are heavy smokers. Also, does
anyone have any sales literature on these cabinets? I would like to try to
get any information on them. I am also currently using this one for a
pattern to make the paper mache horn for my other two cabinets like this one
that are missing the horn. So far the project is working out pretty good.

Re: [Phono-L] eBay Shilling??

2012-03-04 Thread Merle Sprinzen
Two possible ways to get a long series from the same bidder. In one
scenario, there is a higher bidder, and the new bidder keeps entering higher
and higher bids to try to outbid that higher bidder. In the second
scenario, a bidder enters one bid and then enters several others so as to
increase his original bid. You won't see any of those later bids until a
higher bidder enters the auction, and then all the other bids the first
bidder entered will appear that are up to the higher bidder, and one bid (if
one was entered) that exceeds the higher bidder.

Thank you Greg (and also Jim and Steve for chiming in, and Jim for noting
the YouTube videos).

The Youtube video of the live demonstration isn't produced at all; more like
home movies, taken at the Franklin Institute upon the dual-event of first
public showing of the automaton in some years, combined with a book signing
by Brian Selznick back at the place where this vital element of his book
(and movie HUGO) was discovered.

In the event video, it's fun to hear Brian talk about how we discovered the
original writing implement body hidden away within the interior framework of
the machine. We still don't know what the original writing tip was, but
it's likely that it was a small metal nib for ink. The original, ornamented
writing implement body had apparently never been seen in the 80 years that
the automaton had resided at the Franklin.

Also, mine is missing most of its green rubber "feet." Just because it
doesn't hurt to ask, does anyone have a green 102 junker (hah!) that still
has its? If you're willing to part with them, I'd be happy to purchase

Hi Merle,

Does Little Wonder #1 have any particular value? I found one in a stack of
LW's that I have...

I also have a tiny set of children's picture records -maybe 4" records and
some that look like small Durium records.

The four-volume set I have is classical music, and the label has information
in lots of languages -- looks like Arabic, Korean, Russian and French. But
there is no date.

2011-04-21 Thread Merle Sprinzen
A little bit of shameless self-promotion. The book I co-authored with Tim
Brooks, Little Wonder Records and Bubble Books: An Illustrated History and
Discography, has just been released by Mainspring Press. It tells the story
of the founding of the record label, its early and wild success, the
behind-the-scenes courtroom dramas that marked its early history, and the
history of its Bubble Book offshoot. It also contains the most complete
discography to date, including many new titles and performer attributions.

Thanks SO much, Harvey, for letting me know about this. Luckily (given the

[Phono-L] Looking for Mother Goose records

2010-12-06 Thread Merle Sprinzen
I've recently discovered that Columbia formed a partnership with Rust Craft
(the Hallmark of its day), to produce a series of records on a label they
called "Mother Goose Records." The records are the same size as Little
Wonders, and have a black paper label. The original Little Wonder matrix
numbers were used, and I know about two of them -- 464-B is Little Wonder
#943 and 464-C is Little Wonder #814. I'm assuming that there is a 464-A
but don't know what it is, and there might be a 464-D (and E, etc.) or some
other number than 464. These records were originally sold in a box, which
you can see on the left-hand side of this page, about three-quarters of the
way down (along with a photo of the record itself).

http://www.littlewonderrecords.com/little-wonder-history.html

If anyone has any additional information about these, I'd be much obliged --
and if you have any you'd be willing to part with, so much the better.
Thanks!

[Phono-L] Baby phonograph tone arm and reproducer

2010-11-21 Thread Merle Sprinzen
Hi -

I just purchased a Baby phonograph - this one is the "one tier" version with
the Baby logo just above the vertical sound openings. I am now in need of an
original tone arm and reproducer. I had thought the one I have from the "two
tier" version (logo on a separate level than the sound openings) would fit,
but it doesn't, and so I'm still looking. Please contact me off-list if you
have one to spare.

Thanks!

Hi Everyone --

Just in case you're interested, the audio (and some of the visuals) of the
2010 ARSC presentations are now available online. I gave a talk there on
the newly discovered history of Little Wonder records and so you can listen
to that talk and view the slides. I'm not sure it was one of my best
performances (there were some technical glitches at the beginning that
disturbed my "game"), but the information and recordings might be of
interest. And you certainly might be interested in some of the other talks.

But if you were willing to pay more than $200 if there was a bit higher,
then you should put that higher bid into the snipe program. If you put
the truly highest price you're willing to pay into the program you'll
never lose on an item you were willing to pay more for.

[Phono-L] FOR SALE: 1927 Victor catalog and Victrola XI instructions

2009-12-02 Thread Merle Sprinzen
Hi Everyone --

Still fall cleaning... Two items this time:

-- A 24-page 1927 Victor "Orthophonic Victrola Electrola and Radiola
Combinations" catalog. This one is missing the covers and the pages have
been exposed to water at some point in their past. All of the writing is
still perfectly legible and the photographs are still clear -- there's
just a bit of pink tinting in the middle of each page. I'm thinking that
$20 would be a fair price.
-- A reprint of the instructions for a Victrola XI, Type G. This one is
a very well done reproduction -- I thought it was the real thing until I
saw it was printed in 1980 by the AMR Co. of Seattle, WA. The sections
are Unpacking and Setting Up the Machine, How to Operate, Victor
Tungs-Tone Stylus, Victor Fibre Needles, Speed Regulator, Care of Motor,
Sound Box, Care of Records and Causes for Poor Results. $8.50

If you're interested in either of these, please contact me off list.

Best wishes for the holiday!

[Phono-L] FOR SALE: Phonographs for sale and a Nirona portable box

2009-11-15 Thread Merle Sprinzen
Hi Everyone --

It's still fall cleaning time around here, and I thought I'd re-post the
information about the phonographs I still have -- and there are some
additions. I'm happy to send photos. Here's what I have, and if you'd
like any of these or more information, please contact me off list:

PHONOGRAPHS

1. Vanophone -- Good working order and all parts original (at least as
far as I can tell). This is the version without the speed control slider
on the front. $345.
2. Polly Portable phonograph -- This is the one with the paper
collapsible horn, which is present and in good condition. The carrying
handle on the case has one tab missing, so you can't pick it up by the
handle (not that you'd want to anyway). Otherwise everything else is
there and original. $125.
3. Another Polly Portable -- This one is missing the paper horn and the
handle has been replaced. A good machine for parts. $85.

NIRONA BOX

1. The Nirona portable phonographs originally came in a hard cardboard
box that had illustrations on the sides. As you might imagine, these
boxes are fairly rare because they were often disposed of after the
purchase. The top of the box I have is torn but it is all original and
gives you a sense of what the box is like (pictures will tell the story
better than I can). $40

[Phono-L] Shipping charges -- a new pricing scheme

2006-12-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen
In the past few months I've noticed that sellers on eBay have been
charging inflated shipping charges -- often $10-$15 more than the actual
shipping charges, when the real shipping charges are only a few dollars.
At first I thought these were just handling charges to pay people for
their materials and trouble, but now I realize that this is a way for
sellers to get more for their item without having to pay the percentage
to eBay the seller would have to pay if this was part of the bid. Anyone
else experiencing this? It's getting me annoyed...

[Phono-L] Sending attachments

2006-12-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen
I'm not thrilled about attachments because of the increased possibility
of being infected with a virus. If a member's account was hijacked we'd
all get an email that had a virus in the attachment. Those of us that
keep our virus definitions updated would be in better shape, but it could
be misery to some.

I'm catching up on some old emails and found this posting from Robert

note to the whole list -- sorry, but maybe other people would be

describes the differences between Chromium needles (green shank),
Tungstone needles, regular needles, and 'red shank home recording needle'
as well as 'orange shank long playing needle'. Robert -- would you be

[Phono-L] Ward Marston in the Wall Street Journal on 8/25

2006-12-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen
Okay... I admit it... I don't know a lot about our hobby, and don't know
the names of many of the grand masters... But I haven't seen this article
mentioned and thought -- given what he does -- that some of you would
like to know the article appeared. A friend of mine did the caricature
that appears with the story.

[Phono-L] Ward Marston in the New York Times 8/27

2006-12-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen
Here's the Times article for those that prefer not to register
(registering is free...)

**

August 27, 2005
A Master of Making Old Tunes New Again
By FRANK J. PRIAL
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Ward Marston shut down his turntable, pulled off the
record and said, "I'll be singing 'Night and Day' for the rest of the
week."
Mr. Marston's compliment was for Cole Porter, who wrote the song, and for
Fred Astaire, who recorded it in 1932. But not for the recording itself,
one track on a remastered CD. "The sound is thin and the surface
scratchy," he said.
And Ward Marston should know. By almost any measure, he is considered one
of the best in the small but worldwide group of music lovers and sound
engineers dedicated to finding new life in old phonograph records.
Mr. Marston had not worked on the old Cole Porter disc, which irritated
him, he said, because he would have liked to "clean it up." He works
mostly with classical recordings, and his output over the years has been
prolific. There was the reworking of Arturo Toscanini's entire recording
career, ultimately 35 long-playing records, done for the Franklin Mint in
conjunction with the Toscanini family. There was the complete set of
Leopold Stokowski's broadcasts with the Philadelphia Orchestra, which
eventually led to 58 one-hour programs on a local National Public Radio
affiliate. "When Stoky died," he said, "they replayed the whole thing."
Mr. Marston, who has been blind since shortly after birth, first came to
prominence in his field in 1979 when he successfully restored the first
known stereophonic record, made by the Bell Telephone Laboratories in
1932. He has restored old recordings for labels including EMI, BMG,
Biddulph and CBS. He restored all of Rachmaninoff's recordings. "The
producer got the Grammy on that one," he said.
He gathered and reworked everything the tenor Enrico Caruso ever sang
into a microphone or, in the early days, a recording machine horn. A
decade later, he redid the entire Caruso collection using more
sophisticated equipment and adding a rare Caruso recording recently found
in a barn. Yet another project was his restoration of the complete
recording of the legendary soprano Lucrezia Bori. For another project, he
restored most of the very early records for a 93-record collection of the
works of the pianist Arthur Rubinstein.
In 1997, he garnered a Grammy nomination for his work on a collection of
old Fritz Kreisler recordings for BMG. Separately, he did all of
Kreisler's European recordings for a British label. For Naxos, he
restored much of the recording done from 1926 to 1937 by Willem
Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. From 1937
through 1943, Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw recorded for Telefunken,
and he worked on many of those recordings as well.
Improving the sound of old records - in fact, discovering sounds no one
knew were there - demands both technical skill and a high degree of
musical sensitivity. In the past, Mr. Marston said, it was left mostly to
recording engineers, some of whom, in his words, "wouldn't know
Mussorgsky from Mozart."
"You have to try to know what the composer wanted," he said, "and what
the artist tried to achieve."
This does not mean he plays down the technical side of the work. "I come
from a musical, not a technical, standpoint," he said, "but I'm not at
all spooked by the technical part." Indeed, he quickly leaves a layman
behind when he talks about technical achievements in sound reproduction.
"We've come far in recent years, but there are going to be incredible
strides in the next 10 to 15 years," he said.
Restoring an old record, Mr. Marston said, begins very simply - with a
bath. Solutions are used to clean years of dirt and grime that have
collected in the record groves. After that, the bulk of the
rehabilitation is relegated to a computer. "Once the recording has been
digitalized," he said, most of the work can be done from the keyboard,
using sophisticated software.
His own studio is filled with electronic gear, turntables and speakers.
He uses some 15 custom-ground styluses - phonograph needles to most of
us. And he invented and built a device that safely plays his old and
extremely delicate wax cylinder recordings. "But I'm no one-man band," he
said. "I can't do it all. I'm a musician and a historian, and I do have
perfect pitch, but I'm always learning from the engineers. For instance,
there's a guy out in California who can remove pitch flutter from a
recording. He's amazing."
Mr. Marston, 53, was born in nearby Bryn Mawr into an old Philadelphia
family. "Actually," he said, a bit sheepishly, "my name - my full name -
is Henry Ward Marston IV."
"My father was a banker and his father was, well, a rebel. He loved
singing, and in the days before the First World War, he fled to Paris,
where he apparently sang some minor roles at the Opéra Comique," he said.

Mr. Marston said he taught himself to play the piano when he was 4. At 7,
he began lessons in piano

I have a friend who has 400 machines and he's
constantly lamenting that the prices peaked in the
late 80's and early 90's and his collection is worth
about half what he paid for it. Availability has
really brought the prices down.

[Phono-L] Looking for an early Jolson Columbia record

2006-12-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen
Hi Everyone --

I'm looking for one of Al Jolson's early Columbia records -- Columbia #
A1621. One side is "Revival Day". The other side is "Back To The Carolina
You Love". If anyone has one in good condition that they'd like to part
with, please just contact me off list.

Thanks!

Alright, now I am sucked in...I had a VW Eurovan, nice car, got it used. I
took it to a VW specialist independent shop. All of a sudden, things would
start going wrong a feww weeks after he had it in there. Problems would
suddenly appear as he was inspecting it, etc. I suspect now that he would fix
one problem, then cause another so I would have to bring it back. I am more
suspect of independents than of dealers, though dealers gouge on price.

Most of the time you are
better off avoiding dealers and going to an independent mechanic who often
has to survive off of his reputation, dealers charge top price for parts and
service and are often not honest.

This is off-topic, but I cannot let this issue go un addressed. I must
reluctantly disagree with my good friend, Mr. Medved, on this question. I spent
(wasted?) 16 years of my life working in factory-authorized car dealerships as
a parts salesman, and I do not think his comments about independent mechanics
being more honest than dealership-based ones are fair. I dealt extensively
with "side-shop," or "shade-tree," mechanics, as well as dealership prima
donnas who, in some cases, had 6-figure incomes, and all of the latest, special
factory tools, and up-to-date service bulletins. From my years of dealing with
auto mechanics of all kinds, on a day-to-day basis, I can state with
certainty that the majority of them are not very good, wherever they are found,
and
almost all of them will "take you for a ride," if they get the chance.

Also, as cars become ever more sophisticated, the ability of independent
shops to work on them is hard to maintain. Nowadays, many dealership mechanics
merely plug a car's main brain box into a factory-supplied computer, which
spits out a "fault code," that tells the "technician" what the problem is. It
is
hard for independent shops to compete with that kind of technology.

For years after I left the car business, people who found out I had been in
it would ask me where to take their cars to be serviced. I told them I
honestly didn't know. I didn't know where to take my own car, much less theirs.

I now live in a rural area, and drive cars we bought from a small, local
dealership that could not survive if they treated people the way big-city
dealerships do. The people there have been good to me so far, and I plan to
stick
with them.

If you find an "honest mechanic," if that is not an oxymoron, make sure he
goes for regular physicals.

[Phono-L] Do you know what this is?

2006-12-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen
Hi Everyone --

I purchased this phonograph a while ago, but haven't had much luck
finding out anything about it. Do you have any ideas? Any help would be
much appreciated.

[Phono-L] Do you know what this is?

2006-12-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen
I took it apart tonight and will post some additional photos of the works
in the next day or two -- I'll let you know when I've done that. In the
meantime, the only additional identifying marks are on the reproducer,
where it says Columbia and also that it's made in the USA. So the
mystery continues!

[Phono-L] Do you know what this is? (part two)

2006-12-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen
I should have added that the only reason I had the courage (and
knowledge) to take the machine apart was because of Ron L'Herault who
talked me through the entire operation (quite a feat over the phone) and
never lost faith in my capabilities.

Hi Everyone --

I've taken pictures of the "works" and the reproducer of this machine,
and have posted them to my website here:

All new ideas about what this is would be much appreciated!

do it again. Just wanted to let you all know that I've put up a Little

[Phono-L] Thumbscrew for Little Wonder phonograph

2006-12-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen
Hi Everyone --

I'm coming down the homestretch on finally having a complete original
Little Wonder phonograph, and the only part I'm now missing is the
thumbscrew that holds the reproducer to the tone arm. I've uploaded a
photo here (http://www.littlewonderrecords.com/picture-album.html)
that shows what this screw looks like when it's on the phonograph -- it's
got a kind of bump or very tall head at the top end that has striations
so you can turn it with your fingers, and then it has a pretty narrow
screw that goes through the slot in the tone arm and tightens into the
reproducer. Does anyone have an extra of these, or does anyone have one
that they'd be willing to take a close up picture of and send to me,
along with the thread size?

Best,

Merle

[Phono-L] Little Wonder Records...Listen, Learn, & Enjoy

2006-12-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen
Now that my horn has already been "tooted" a little (thanks, Dennis, for
your very kind words...), I thought I'd send along the link to my site:

www.littlewonderrecords.com

It's got lots of information about these records (and their "siblings" --
the Bubble Books). There's also a page off the home page (the "Music
Library page) where you can hear more of the records than I played on
WFMU.

[Phono-L] Little Wonder Records...Listen, Learn, & Enjoy

2006-12-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen
There are actually several (probably 100 or so) that I still don't have
that I know of. But then there are the ones I don't know about. The
problem is that no one knows how many were actually manufactured -- some
numbers were probably intentionally not manufactured, but other numbers
were and we just don't know because a copy hasn't surfaced yet. And
there are multiple takes of some, and there's absolutely no telling about
those until you find one you don't have. So on the one hand the
collection is limited, and on the other it still feels like a long way to
go.

I've been trying to get information about that series. Do you know more
about it? I have heard of the series called Piccola Meraviglia that were
manufactured by Columbia -- some are two-sided and some one-sided. Is
there a series that was actually called Little Wonder?

[Phono-L] Styli assistance, please

2006-12-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen
It happens ALL the time... No apologies necessary... And in this hobby,
there are VERY few women, so the mistake is natural. The funniest story
I have is when I was starting as a freshman at Oberlin College (pretty
liberal in its day). We all got our rooming and roommate assignments
from the Dean of Men's office (for some reason there was no Dean of
Women). I didn't worry about the source of the assignment once I
discovered that my roommate was named "Lynn Catherine", but she and her
parents had an uneasy summer until they met me...

Thank you Dennis, for your very kind words about what I know about Little
Wonders... It's simply a function of liking them...

[Phono-L] Edison article and ads

2006-12-24 Thread Merle Sprinzen
Hi Everyone --

I won a large lot of Youth's Companion magazines on eBay recently, and
bid because one of the issues had advertising for Little Wonder records
and Bubble Books in it. As I was looking through the other issues that
came with the lot, I discovered three that might be of interest to those
of you who collect Edison-related materials.

There is a two-page biographical article on Edison in the November 11,
1926 issue (complete with a photo of his boyhood home in Milan, a photo
of him when he was 14, a photograph of him and his wife from 1926, a
photograph of him at age 31 with one of his first phonographs, and
photographs of seven of his inventions -- locomotive, the black box by
which he discovered the radio spark, dynamo, the light bulb, the original
sketch of the phonograph, electric motor). There are two other issues
that have advertising for Edison products -- one from November 30, 1911
has an ad for an Edison phonograph, and another from April 18, 1918 has
an ad for Edison records (Amberol Concert, Amberol and Standard).

I have no idea whether any of these are of interest to any of you and
thought I'd ask -- I'll put them up on eBay if I don't get nibbles here.
I have no idea what a fair price would be, so please make an offer.

And it was a nice excuse to wish you all a very happy holiday.

Best,

Merle
