I've found it to be a lost cause to add pure white space in tabs during emails. Most clients are helpful in making things user friendly by removing leading white space. What i found did work on most machines at the time was either just a newline or a Q: question\nA: answer\n which isn't as formatted, but does the readabilty job. and allow you to freely use quotes without having to remember to
escape them (or escape to insert a variable).

\n is the code to write a new line, between double quotes. Actually it translates to a 0D or 0A code. If there is a 0D or 0A in a text or file (or normal text email) it works as a newline. If you look at the _source_ of your HTML file you will see it too. BR is the HTML code for new line. Browsers understand only BR (well and P and H1-6 also cause a new line), they are taught to ignore the 0A and 0D. If you have a piece of text coming in from a textarea or database, it usually will have the \n type code. To show such texts in a HTML page you have to translate the \n to BR. Because this is so common, PHP has the function nl2br(). If you want it to work with \n, then you will need to use the pre/pre tags. Otherwise you need to translate the \n's into br tags. \n is NOT an html tag so when you print them to the browser, it adds lines to the source, but as you might already know, a new line in the source of an html page does NOT give a new line in the output unless you use an html tag that would give the new line. Paragraph sign actually. I'm filterting some data for MySQL. I need a field delimiter.
I don't want to use \n. Contents of each field are on a signel line of text.
I have come up with this, unless someone can suggest better:

$inputresult = str_replace(\n, ¶\n, $inputresult);

unless he really wants to output \n, not line change.

Instead, I think you'd have to escape the slash: \\n... but it's
irrelevant, because there's a function that does this for you:
$newstr = nl2br($newstr);
Also, you should try to use str_replace('was', 'is', $str), because it's
less resource intensive than ereg*

I cannot get a breakline or line appart with \n with printf or print, I've to use always BR. \n shows only a space. HTML does not break lines on newlines in the source code. That's why BR is there. If you look at the source code, you'll see there is a newline in the source. Remember that HTML source code tells the browser how to render the page. Just use \n. Both OS's understand this to be a linefeed and will behave accordingly. With the exception of a class that performs POP3 queries, I've never had to use \r\n in my code.
